Russian: Yet another victim of terrorism
takeanumber replied to Hawk's topic in The Rest of the World
What does Nazi-ism and Islamism have in common? They're both totalitarian systems. And once a totalitarian system comes to power, they always fail to deliever what they promise. And so they turn to the one thing they can deliever: destruction and death. Now I don't know how much you actually know about the Koran or Islamist though in general, but even a pretty 'moderate' country like Pakistan ought to cause you discomfort, that is of course, unless you truly hold high the banner of human rights. The people who say that an Islamic government is freedom, are the same people who say that keeping a woman in a burqua and keeping them from school, or driving, is liberation. It's a religion replete with doublespeak. Do muslims have the right to their religion? Within the personal sphere only. The momment religious people impose their religious beliefs politically on all of society, you create a vaccum in which reason cannot exist. To protect the freedom of religion, the human right to religion, you must keep religion in your personal sphere. The English knew it. We inherited it. Radical muslims do NOT have the right to impose their version of their religion on other muslims. That includes Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Pakistan. Radical muslims, moreover, do NOT have the right to impose their version of their religion on the Western World, which they are seeking to do through blunt force. Their object is clear, just as it is with any other totalitirian regime. As for the charges of red-herring-ism. It's curious how some people on the left, and the right, are so incredibly pro-human rights....up to the point that it applies to white people. But the momment that we talk about any other colour, oops! suddenly they go numb, and pro-human rights and human dignity go out the window in favour of saying "oh, that's their culture and we should respect that." Bull. They won't let us live next to them in peace. The only answer to totalitarianism is to destory it. Period. I know that people from the far left are used to having everybody else in society carry the costs and burdens of life for them, so it comes as no surprise then that the cost of freedom is included in that too. ----------------------------------------------- You can try to say "oh, but what about Chechnya' all you want. You're still, in my view, rationalizing it. What has gone on in Chechnya is terrible. But you know, did I get any support from you, or anybody else on the Left, twelve years ago when I warned of the war? Nope. And when the fighting began, did anybody from the Left, or for that matter, the Right, support me in my call for intervention? Nope. After all, came the refrain, "we have to respect the Russian culture". So these tears from the Left regarding the poor Chechens are that of crocodiles. The left didn't give a rats ass about Chechnya until it was convinient for them to use it as a ploy against Putin. And yes, that's pretty damn sick of you. Take your fake concern, and your "we're just trying to understand why it happened" nonsense and shove it. What happened in that school was wrong and totally, completely, uncalled for and horrific, NOTWITHSTANDING what has gone on in Chechnya in the past decade, which frankly, you didn't give a damn about until last week. -
Bush Involved in Drugs, Abortion
takeanumber replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Not really. Everybody knew about the drunk driving. But the pot...while in the service, which, there are new facts comming out. But I suppose that's all tit for tat politics right? Typical double standard, but what do you expect comming from them, right? I just think the whole 'born again' line and logic, to excuse anything that somebody has done in the past, is pretty weak. -
Once again, you have some posters on these boards who will justify wrong doing by some by pointing out the wrong doing by others. Which is what I've come to expect from those posters. So I'm not surprised, just a little dissapointed. Cheney's comments were wrong. I don't think that he mistakenly made them. It's a pretty clear message. It's pretty low. I'm sure more than a few bodies are spinning right now.

My boss, and many of my cohorts are American. I got no problem with them, because they too like the Canadian way. Here are a few pointers: 1. Keep your religion to yourself. If you're a pagan, that's fine, you have the freedom on religion, keep it to yourself. If you're a devout protestant, terrific. Use it in your own life, but keep it to yourself. 2. Anti-American comments are very common, even in Conservative circles in Calgary. Take them personally and speak up. Remind them that not all Americans are feces chucking Lindi Englands, and that Bush didn't actually win the election. If you're a social conservative republican, don't come to Canada. You won't like it and we're better off without you. 3. If you say that you're going to call, call. 4. Most Canadians don't care that you drive a fast car, wear expensive clothes, or have a nice watch. You're really not impressing anybody. Leave that part of your mentality behind. 5. Two words: Social Mobility. We're an equal opportunity country: both the rich and poor alike have the opportunity to become ditch diggers and CEO's. If you come here, don't try to burn the ladder behind you. 6. Welcome!

Who should own Alberta's oil?
takeanumber replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Was it declared illegal by a federalist, Ontario-Quebec dominated court? No. That doesn't make it any less illegitamate. Was the Trudeau government legitimate at the time of the NEP? Yes. Does that automatically make every single law that a legit government passes legit? No, of course not. Don't be stupid. --------------------- Alberta gets boned on equalization payments. Alberta oil companies used to get taxed at a rate much higher than any other corporations, particularly a lot higher than the Ontario auto industry. ---------------------- Ontario reaps tons of benefits from Alberta's oil fields and infrastructure. The arguement that since Ontario subsized the industry 50 years ago, therefore, Alberta is indebted to Ontario for the rest of its existence, smacks of Torontotism. Alberta subsidized Quebecois rail companies by paying very high rates to ship their grain. Using the previous flawed logic then, Quebec is to be forever indebted to Alberta forever. What you're suffering from is called Quebec-Ontario Myopia. It's the belief that everybody in Confederation owes you something because you're from Quebec or because you're from Ontario. Those from Quebec (August1991 in particular) who are advocating for the second raping of Alberta should be thanking those of us in Alberta for subsidizing his ass. If it wasn't for Albertan money, the socialist province of Quebec would have to cut a lot deeper than it is. -
Canada keeps it's head in the sand

THere should be boots on the ground right now. Sudan is just more proof that the only thing that radical islam (or islamist states) can produce is death and genocide. They can't deliver on anything else. -
That's lawyers for ya.

I suppose you are so much wiser than the collective will of the people. Did somebody say Mugabe? ------------------------ Alright. My problem with free votes and MP autonomy are three fold. 1. Many people vote for the party platform, the leader, or their local candidate. Studies (Blais et al, 2002, Carty Cross and Young, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004) show that people vote mainly for the leader and/or the party platform, with the local candidate not really taking a huge chunk of the reasoning. Therefore, giving MP's more autonomy diminishes the ability of most voters to evaluate who to vote for based on national policy at best, regional policy at worst. 2. The size of Canadian federal constituencies do not allow adequate rural access to their MP's, and especially not for urban access to their MP's that would make such a system of 'loose fish' effective. The proper size of each consituency to make such a loose fish system acceptable would be 15,000 to 30,000 people per constiuency, resulting ina House of some 750-1500 members. I could live with a number this large. 3. The party-public interface is broken. It would need to be repaired before anything could be done about the leader-heavy nature of the system. -------------------

Good Opinion Report
takeanumber replied to Montgomery Burns's topic in Canada / United States Relations
If FOX had any decency, it would drop the word 'News' from that channel. It's not 'news' by any stretch of the imagination, it should really be called FOX Opinion or FOX Editorial, or better yet, FOX Al-Jazeera, because it is alot like Al-Jazeera in it's hateful, spiteful tone. -
Draft-dodger memorial to be built in B.C.

I think that it's funny. You know, if they build a waterpark next to it, it'll go from a tourist 'attraction' to a tourist mega-hub. -
Russian: Yet another victim of terrorism
takeanumber replied to Hawk's topic in The Rest of the World
Thx for the backup August. I'll target this statement: 1933.French.Socialist.Crap Anybody who claims that they discuss the issue of children getting gunned in the back 'dispassionately' is clearly antithetic to Russians, or perhaps, Slavs in general. In my mind, to come to these boards and to imply that the mass slaughtering of children is alright because the 'Russians did it first', or even more disconcerning, "The only way to solve this problem is by dispassionately negotiating" is precisely that, an appeaser a-la 1933. Does anybody here really think that Hitler could have been 'talked out of it'? I mean common people. On the sidebar, Putin has now adopted Bush's pre-emptive strike policy. I bet the Bush admin is saying 'oh crap', and they should be. (See where it leads!!!!) So we can all take comfort in that we have a huge ally against the Radical Islamist threat. But at the same time, let's not justify or rationalize the slaughtering of Children. I don't believe the entire left has lost its moral compass, I just think that some people, just like those on the right, who subscribe to only one form of thinking, they just become so incredibly myopic in their point of view that end employing really illegitimate logic, and start seeing what they want to see. -

Who should own Alberta's oil?
takeanumber replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It's not quite as clear cut as that. As 'administrators', Albertans control access and distribution of that oil. The NEP was not, by any stretch of the imagination, 'legitimate'. Trudeau was just as bad as any other Liberal Prime minister when it came to minority rights. If you wern't a favoured minority (by favoured, I mean favoured by Trudeau), then it was okay to trample on them. Alberta, which was, and still is, a minority, would be trampled if the NEP was brought back in. I don't understand the double standard...it's fine for the market to work when it comes to automobiles and other manufactured goods in Ontario and Quebec, but suddenly, the market doesn't apply to Alberta...or any other peripheral province, because it's not convinient for central Canada. Moreover, there was a catagorical pledge by the federal government never to have a repeat of the NEP. Any moves towards such a program would seriously undermine the fabric holding confederation together. -
Who should own Alberta's oil?
takeanumber replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Confederation does not revolve around the needs of Ontario, although considerable (too much) energy has been spent on Quebec. The Constitution says that the provinces have control over the natural resources. You can't change the Constitution without Alberta's consent. The entire arguement becomes moot. Moan and groan about oil prices all you want. If it wasn't for the high world market price, a lot of the oil currently being pumped wouldn't be pumped, so there's no such thing as a 'made in Canada' price. -
He's right. You can't rationalize with these people. Radical Islam promises to deliver societies from evil, from corruption and oppression. Instead all radical Islam, just like Nazi-ism and Communism before it, can deliver is death and destruction. We had the chance to put Hitler down in 1933 before re-armenment, and we chose to rationalize. Let's not make the same mistake again.

Russian: Yet another victim of terrorism
takeanumber replied to Hawk's topic in The Rest of the World
Killing somebody who organizes terrorist attacks (I don't care if the terrorist is in a wheel chair, a midget, gimp or mentally handicapped, if you're a terrorist, you deserve what you get) is a terrorist, and is fair game. Killing a child with a gunshot to the back is not justifiable. It's not justified because your kid got hit by a russian mortar. It's not justified because your homeland isn't independant. It's not justified because your god thinks it's justified. It's not justified because you want to get into heaven. It's not justified because you try to justify it. It's not justified. So don't try to rationalize it. When you do, you demean everybody in the West. Worse, you sound like a French socialist circa 1933, and we all know what happened when they started to compromise. So, stop trying to rationalize and sympathize thinking that it'll make you sleep better at night or because you got an axe to grind with Putin or Bush. -
Who should own Alberta's oil?
takeanumber replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Three letters: NEP. Twenty + years after the fact, Albertans are still pissed. Just try to bring back the NEP and see what happens. It would be enough to break up the country. Confederation wouldn't be able to handle it. It says in the constitution that the provinces have control. Because of the ammending formula, you need Alberta's permission to change it. Good luck trying to change the constitution. -

<Sarcasm> I love the comparisons between a terrorist who gets killed by an Israeli rocket, and a Russian kid who is gunned in the back by an Arab terrorist. bravo. clap.clap.clap They're totally analogous. </Sarcasm> -

Why not Alberta? Ummmm. Because that's in the constitution. Why try to change the deal? Because it's inconvinient for Ontario? Must be nice to be from Ontario and think that confederation revolves around you. -
I think that white collar criminals ought to be handled more roughly than how we treat a regular criminal. Black ought to be sent, if found guilty, to a real prison, and be stripped of the right to sit on any corporate board. He should have to pay back all the money he stole.
