Canadian Islamic leader opens mouth...
takeanumber replied to kimmy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It's too bad he feels that way. -
There's more culture at the dairy isle of the Connaught Safeway than in Calgary. This is something that many anti-community Calgarians don't understand: Heritage is NOT culture. Heritage is a component, but certainly not the only thing. Moreover: if you're so high on your 'culture' as you claim to be, why the hell arn't you, and your friends, down at Stampede Park on the weekends? In fact, I never see ANYBODY who looks as though they come from a community built under 20 years ago. Strong assumptions yes. Frankly, the reason why this city has a hollow soul is because of neo-yuppy Boomer/Generation X'ers who want to live in their little home, not deal with their neighborhoods (little though join a community association), and live perfectly sanitized, compartmentalized lives never feeling the side-effects or taking responsibility for their own actions. That said, the white wine socialists of Mount Royal, Bankview, the West Village, Sunnyside, Connaught, Scarborough, Garrison Woods and Hillhurst do in fact try to create a real sense of community and a proud arts scene, of which, virtually nobody from the 'burbs can take credit for.

Do you really believe anything Bush says?
takeanumber replied to takeanumber's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Well, it goes back to Bush's Blackwhite-ness. He'll argue that we're fighting for freedom, while trampling on civil liberties. He'll argue that we're fighting the terrorists, while he and his father colludes with the Saudi's and the terrorists. He'll argue that the economy is getting stronger, when all the evidence points to the contrary. If Bush is reelected, the middle class should really be weary. The changes to the tax code, the implementation of a draft, and the continuation of lax corporate laws is going to completely screw them. -
Only a conservative would think that a 'B' is a good grade.

Yes, Yes, let's poop on the CBC, yadda yadda yadda. Yawn. Let's move on. Pearson, all the way.

Gay vs. Animal Marriage?
takeanumber replied to Fickler's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Let's just take a step back here and look at it from a public policy perspective. Conditions in society used to be such that if somebody was gay (and it's NOT a choice, you feces chucking neo-cons) and did not have enough courage, they would get married, have children, then sneak out once in a while, play in the bushes, and bring back something nasty for his wife. Recently, conditions have changed so that some people had less courage, or who have developed more courage throughout their lives, that they could come out of the closet, and get a divorce from their wives/husbands: which certainly isn't good for the children. A big part of the decision to admit to everybody that you're gay is how much social anymosity you're going to come up against. Some people simply don't have the courage. The solution is for complete acceptance, including marriage, right from the getgo. Why? By lowering the courage threshold (which is still high even when you're in a comfy environment) will keep more gay men and lesbian women from getting married to the wrong sex, and preven serious consequences down the road. The neo-con, authoritarian alternative is to simply to repress homosexuals--based on the false premise that it's a choice. That has quite a bit in common with quite a few proud regimes. -
No Wonder PM Martin Is Out Of The Country
takeanumber replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I think it's plausible that Martin knew. Liberal corruption. Conservative corruption. (Take a look at Alberta). It's all the same rot, so don't say that somehow Liberal corruption is so much worse. They're both equally horrid. -
Do you really believe anything Bush says?
takeanumber replied to takeanumber's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Says you. Let's grab you off the streets for being the wrong colour, strip you naked, shove a rubber glove up your ass, and detain you for 48 hours without sleep, a lawyer, or charge, and see how you like it. I'm sure you're going to argue now that such treatment is not a violation of civil rights, hmmm? Or are you going to deny that that doesn't happen? Which is it? If you don't have an answer, just avoid it. -
Down, Down They Go, Where The Conservatives
takeanumber replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
teehee. August might be right about the sample, if only 1000 were interviewed. Anyway: Libs are up, cons are down. I wonder if Harper's latest stunts in the HoC has anything to do it? And when the hell is that policy convention supposed to be? -
Canadian Self-Haters Grow Shrill
takeanumber replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
In Canada, it's the neo-cons who are the unpatriotic ones. They have no pride in their country, and absolutely no respect for the beliefs of the society, and our traditions. I suppose, it would take a neo-con to simultaneously hold high the banner of majoritarianism and spit on it. And Burkey-poo: you're a prof, in CANADA. How much work do you do compared to your American counterparts? Damn straight. YOU'RE NOT JUST PART OF THE PROBLEM: YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. Know your place Burkey. -
There are facts, spin, and then there is editorial. Opinion is supposed to be confined to the editorial page. Instead, we get rags like the Calgary Herald that circumvent the journalistic process (which would require them to go out and get the other side of the story) and instead, they slap the word 'commentary' over the news article and call it an 'exclusive'. Journalistic 'ethics' have become as bad Nixon's. Shame on them.

To borrow an old arguement from a neo-con poster here: "Would somebody please think of the children?" God knows I can't be home all the time, and my little Johny, who's only 16, might accidentally stumble upon Fox news. I don't want my johny getting infected with that kind of hatred. Would somebody please think of the children? --------------------- In all seriousness: I doubt there's even a market in Canada for that kind of tripe. So long as it's not being subsidized by the American consevative establishment, then why not let them try? But, the momment that it becomes an outlet to provide cover for the Alliance crypto-facists, that'll be the line, and we'll have to crack down. Yet again, if you give a neo-con an inch, they will take a mile.

Already the Cons are starting throw sand...

Do you really believe anything Bush says?
takeanumber replied to takeanumber's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I must agree on the point that Bush behaved like a pussy on 9-11. He just hid in his airplane, circling. Kinda reminds me of his national guard service. I think that Bush has some pretty big character flaws. -

US Presidential Debates
takeanumber replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I can't get over how many regulations there are for the debate.... But I suppose, Kerry can't be too careful with a man like Bush. -
Do you really believe anything Bush says?
takeanumber replied to takeanumber's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Perhaps Bush is a pathological liar. It's like a constant stream of falsehoods comming from his mouth ALL THE TIME. Take for instance, the situation in Iraq. He got his puppet Alawi to come on over and blame the media for everything, and then Bush says things are actually pretty good in Iraq... It's just a contant stream... -
I agree. It should be about individual choice, but there needs to be good incentives (paying the real cost of water, tax breaks) for those who make the choices which are most optimal for everybody.

France, as usual, was just looking out for France. Iraq owed France debt. France didn't want a repeat of the Russian fiasco. I think France should forfeit its debt. If they care for the people and children of Iraq as much as they purport, they should do so now. If not, then I suppose we'll know exactly where France's interests lie.

They've implemented metering. The policy direction is to let the market decide, and that'll stimulate water savings. It's obscene how much water is being used, especially on lawns. I'd like to see a tax credit, in addition to money savings, from choosing to have a balsom garden with a handsome rock garden instead.

If by 'Is Like' mean "Is like being a bad", then you're right.

True. The killing of hostages is very different from collateral damage. The US et al always try not to bomb hospitals or schools. You can't say the same with respect to some insurgents and Al Queda. When an American bomb hits a hospital, it's pretty horrific, granted, but I think there's something to be said for degree.

Do you really believe anything Bush says?
takeanumber replied to takeanumber's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Wow. Well. I don't believe that the economy is getting better. It's getting outsourced. Moreover, so many Americans are running out of their version of EI. It's really quite scary. But I suppose they're turning that corner. That corner is being turned. They're turning the corner. The debates should be fun to watch. I think we're going to see Kerry be more human. That would be terrific. -
I have the newspaper. I don't have a subscription to the Herald, so no, no link. Here's the same story, a little bit more developed, but it doesn't nearly do the original article justice. You should read how the club owners justify racism. Enjoy. http://www.canada.com/calgary/globaltv/sto...24-853b5645c68a

How quickly the topic changes. How quickly the conservatives retreat in the face of economic reason.
