Old News-Old/Old/Old. Henry Kissinger tried to bring Latin America to the US's attention back in '91 Having travelled/lived/worked in Mexico for over 25 years now the latest news doesn't disturb me at all, the closer one is to the USA the worse the drug violence is-it was ever thus.

Bell buys 756 electronics stores from The Source
bill_barilko replied to jdobbin's topic in Business and Economy
In defence of The Source-I recently was quoted 50% of the cost of my cheap old Timex watch to change the battery-this was @ The Bay (they wanted almost $20 IIRC). Going online I found The Source selling the battery I needed for $5 and they had it in stock @ my local outlet, the net supplied battery changing instructions. -
Ignatieff continues to make overtures to farmers, west
bill_barilko replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
My guess is that you have little contact with different sectors of society-there are many people who produce enough to live and the rest of the world can go hang. That is not agi-business-that is subsistence living and is as popular as ever. -

Agreed but not as much as the laughable gem quoted below Since when did farmers have duties-other than an obligation to keep their own body and soul together? -

Plans to Close Prison Farms Taking Heat.
bill_barilko replied to Progressive Tory's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Ditto! In the early 70's I lived within hearing distance of one for a while I mean we could hear the cows in the AM never any probs. Surprised the farms are still there given the massive urban sprawl in Ontario now. -
Old Old News The fact is that the wool business is a shadow of what it once was, a sunset industry.

Freed Dolphins! DFO could have done a little more!
bill_barilko replied to wulf42's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Didn't know there was any money in Dogfish anymore, everyone I know who commercially fished has either taken up sport guiding or knitting I was @ Langara last May no Orcas around stealing hooked Salmon but the Sea lions stole a few, tossing them around just like you said. Have seen an Orca tear-or rather chomp-a hooked Spring Salmon right behind the head they are smart animals for sure. -

Eyeball-great story and I believe every word-people let their emotions over rule their brains. I'm a sport fisherman here in BC so you can imagine how I feel about Seals and I rarely let outsiders know how I feel about them or what happens when no one's around...... -
FYI-Bill has been managing retail/running his own import/export and small scale eco tourism company since christ was a cowboy, I could sit here and pound on this keyboard for hours and hours but why bother? All you proved with your laughably uniformed and snobbish post is you know how to spike your own blood pressure. Just yours though.

The article as linked tells an amazing story-a proposed turnaround of almost Brobdingnagian proportions by a company some would say has a lot to answer for.Not a perfect move but bound to shake some dust loose in corporate boardrooms/shareholders meetings. Drug giant GlaxoSmithKline pledges cheap medicine for world's poor The world's second biggest pharmaceutical company is to radically shift its attitude to providing cheap drugs to millions of people in the developing world. In a major change of strategy, the new head of GlaxoSmithKline, Andrew Witty, has told the Guardian he will slash prices on all medicines in the poorest countries, give back profits to be spent on hospitals and clinics and – most ground-breaking of all – share knowledge about potential drugs that are currently protected by patents. Click Here for the whole long article from the Guardian

There are ways around everything....... -
It's all online-all you have to do is look.

Generally I don't bother reading your pedantic rants No, nor do I click on the links you provide because they are more of the same tiresome crap. Haven't owned a TV since the mid-70's and now follow the news online. Consider myself as well informed as anyone and my blood pressure doesn't spike when I post

The latest shootout in Vancouver was a half dozen blocks from my house, Sunday night in winter is quite quiet in the city and I could hear the gunshots clearly last night. Note this is a very toney neighbourhood and this is the second gangster shootout in 2 years. The police here refuse to address reality-they seem to exist in some parallel universe where handing out traffic tickets passes for dealing with gang warfare. They hold press conferences where they announce that 'We need people to stop shooting each other'-Well Duh!

Off the top of my head The Danger Tree Memory, War, And The Search For A Family's Past Written by David Macfarlane Emulating the circuitous tales told by his mother's relatives, the Goodyears of Newfoundland, David Macfalane weaves the major events of the island's twentieth century--the ravages of tuberculosis; the great seal-hunt disaster; the bitter Confederation debate, and above all, the First World War--into his own tale of the ill-starred fortunes of his family. He brings to life a multi-generational cast of characters who are as colourful as only Newfoundlanders can be. With humour, insight, and genuine love for those heroes and charlatans, pirates and dreamers, he explores the meaning of family and the consequences of forgotten history. So many more I'll try to add some when I have time.

All kinds are today and we're all paying for their bed/board. More evidence you don't have a clue. If a person gets a phone call in the middle of the night telling them 3 of their relatives have disappeared then they run for it-this happens all the time in some places. How do they apply to come to Canada legally? Answer-they don't they just run. BTW-I worked with people from El Salvador back in the early 80's who had to do just that-their stories would curl your hair-if you had any left. -

Deported to where? A little known fact re:deportation is that Canada has to prove to wherever that the person in question is in fact a citizen of that country-not always easy in some third world hellhole where births are often not registered and ID papers suspect. It's the job of Consular staff in whatever the country is to perform this task and I'm sure they have all kinds of things they'd rather be doing than combing through dusty records in airless warehouses for documents that might not exist. So the wheels grind slow and that person either sits in jail-if they're judged to be a risk-or let free to wander the streets as per the Honduran drug dealers I see all the time on the DES here in Vancouver. -

There's still a lot of work to be done Terra-side before we start on Luna. For instance monster sized deposits of frozen methane can be mined undersea-not exactly sure what to do with it after that but time and technology cure all. Also general garden variety undersea mining is in it's infancy, places like PNG, The Cook Islands are said to have untold riches lying around on/just under the seabed, ask any Canadian mining promoter they know all about it.
