Over-react much? The reality is that the NDP could form the official opposition but they don't have enough resources (not for years) to form the gov't. And if the Liberals hold the balance of power, most MPs would rather die than prop up an NDP-led coalition which would essentially kill the Liberal brand. Separation has some support in Alberta but lets face it, the reason why Alberta would never opt out is because the oil era is about to end in a couple decades. They are going to need the other provinces as much as the other provinces need Alberta right now.

The thing is that these junior hockey games are attended mostly by white men. Obviously, white men are the core of the conservative supporters. Also, because they are pumped about the game, I expect them to be willing to voice their concerns. If Harper, on the other hand, was at a university campus function and tried to get an applause, he would be booed too.

I too was unsure of who I was going to vote for. After watching that video, I can tell you this, I am more sure now than I have ever been before. Did you hear what he said. Not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6, not 7, not 8, not 9, but 10 degrees to the right. By the end of the next campaign, I am sure that Liberals will be polling in the 90s.

Will Ruby Dhalla Survive this Political Scandal?
SSD replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Come just before the next election, if Dhalla's case is not resolved, it would be best for her to resign and let some "star" fill in for her riding. That would be the smartest move rather than for her to lose even if she could be innocent. Also, it would prevent the Liberals from losing an important riding in the most important area in the country in the next election (the 905 could decide who forms the next election). -
Just reading this entire thing and my head is spinning. Wow, you are very ignorant and bordering on racism and hate. First, the lawyer did not want Ruby to speak because its going to go to court and I don't know how that is analogous to Islam. Maybe you should peak into the type of things going on in her riding. A lot of people are questioning if it actually was something the conservatives set up since the last time around the Tory establishment in her riding began to personally attack her. Ok, I want to get this straight. You said "You trust the Sikh, 3rd world ethics of Ruby Dhalla and her family?" I'm sorry but I don't see how Sikhism is in this question. Please, you are too hateful to actually realize that Sikhism has nothing to do with this. I ain't sikh but I do know that Sikhism is one of the only, if not the only, religions to actually stand up for women's rights, right from its inception. It also rejects the caste system. Second, how is it third world. Ruby was born in Winnipeg. Even if she "used" her "third world ways," just imagine if she had used the same values people like you "real Canadians" have used. Raised with the cattle, inbred, taught the world was created 4000 years ago. I don't know what point claiming that she wasn't the first sikh woman mp makes because she and Nina Grewal both were the first sikh women in parliament. I don't understand how that could be refuted but then again, Conservatives think they have "saved" this country since 2006 by cutting our GST by 2%. Yay, I can buy a piece of candy for $1.13 and not $1.15! Are you calling for Ruby to leave Canada? Where should she go? She isn't a citizen of any other country than Canada. She is every much as Canadian as you or I am. You are ready to boot her after the allegations of two people a year after they left their jobs? Just imagine how'd you feel if I called for you to leave this country only after "someone" "said" that you stole a piece of candy without a trial. You actually said this: "These poor phillipino women just trying to send money back home to their parents and kids while they are actually WORKING in Canada (unlike most of the modern immigrants in Canada (as stats show))."? I know one thing. And this is it: you aren't a conservative supporter. You are pretending to be conservative and make everyone think that conservatives are racist, etc. Well, bravo. You've done a good job. It was funny while it lasted but c'mon, you are not fooling anyone.

I know there has been a lot of debate these past few days. I just am not able to believe that an MP, a chiropractor would be stupid enough to illegally treat her employees in the said way. I am not saying that the nannies are lying in the way they were treated but remember, even Ruby said that she was not involved in the hiring/firing and supervising the employees as she was in Ottawa most of the time. If you asked me, its not Ruby who should be at fault here, its her brother. With regards to cleaning her chiropractor office, she is not even practicing anymore, its her brother.

Tories court Bloc and NDP in bid to hold onto power
SSD replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I will not accept this coalition of socialists, separatists, and Bush-ites. This is the beginning of this country breaking down. Harper has sold out and now with the Bloc, he will negotiate the secession of Quebec. With Layton, he will negotiate the government buying all the companies and regulating what individuals do for a living. With himself, he will impose that everyone convert to his brand of christianity. Goodbye Canada, it was nice knowing you. I can see it already, riots across the country opposing this (Calgary, Vancouver, Ottawa, etc.). -
Harper didn't do that. He pissed them off and they are calling him another "Bush." Read up. Now...Obama is a person that is reconnecting in a meaningful way. Even Colombians are saying that if the free trade deal is put into law for them, Canada will be hated as much as the U.S. by them.

I added hehehe. I pressed submit accidentally early. But Iggy doesn't support torture...at least as a politician.
-
Torture, etc....hehe. But seriously, I like that he has expressed support for the oilsands (or at least using it while we can), for the high speed rail on the Windsor-Quebec Corridor, Quebec as a nation, a cap-and-trade system, increased funding for University research (which will create the new economy that will take over the current dying one), his perceived stance on the human rights commission, etc.
-
I like th NDP for their stance on certain social issues but can't relate to their fiscal stances. The Liberals represent a good balance of programs and not spending out of our means or taxing out of our means.
-
For me, last time I voted for the liberal candidate since he was the most qualified and I agreed with him on most issues. I didn't like the leader much-Stephane Dion and really didn't like the other leaders either. So it was an issue of which candidate suited me the best. This time around the choice is clear for me. Ignatieff is a much stronger leader than Dion and falls in line with what I believe in, in terms of political ideology (centrist). I also see why he is currently the most popular political leader in Canada on the federal level. Harper out, Ignatieff in. Now its a matter of whether it is going to be a minority or majority.

Bilingualism in Canada doesn't necessarily mean that everyone speaks both languages. It means that people that know either language can get access to governmental services anywhere they live.
-
Those EKOS poll numbers are awesome. I never knew that the difference in support would be that large. I can't wait for the Liberal Convention which will establish Ignatieff as the official leader and give him the legitimacy in terms of what Canadians see him as. Even the EKOS guy has said that all those that used to be uncertain about Iggy are now having favourable views about him (in a 2-to-1 ratio). Then, give the Liberals a few months of campaign preparation, policy development and fund-raising and voila, a strong minority or even a slight majority for the Liberals.

What's she doing partying with the Taliban in the first place. Serves her right.

Liberal MP Introduces Bill to Decriminalize Marijuana
SSD replied to normanchateau's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Only a conservative would want alcoholics run wild while preventing people from relaxing after a long day of work by using marijuana. Most marijuana users are not abusers...just like most alcohol users are not alcoholics. Actually alcohol is more addictive than weed. -
Liberal MP Introduces Bill to Decriminalize Marijuana
SSD replied to normanchateau's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I am all for this private member's bill. Actually, I think that we need to go even further but I know that beggers don't choose. Eventually legalizing and then regulating marijuana will be a boost to Canada since smoking marijuana is not necessarily a bad thing. If all you social conservatives (aka social fascists) want to keep marijuana illegal, then you should criminalize alcohol as well since its way more dangerous. Can you imagine how it would be if we taxed this stuff and sold it just like we do for alcohol (maybe better put in a pharmacy, behind the desk). It would be a renewed revenue source and really help us fund some of these expensive programs. Hell, if the tax goes to the federal government, we could probably cut the deficit in half instantaneously. To all you opposers, just think of it this way, it is cheaper for the health care system to take care of the abusers (probably an insignificantly small percentage of all actual users) than for us to police, jail, kill, etc., this money making industry. -
Tories, Mulroney in tiff over party membership
SSD replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The more reason for Mulroney to accept that these Conservatives are not the old PC party but really the Reform in pantyhose (he actually said that about the Alliance). He should leave the party and independently or even as a Liberal tell people that in the next election Iggy is the best option. -
Tories, Mulroney in tiff over party membership
SSD replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I think Mulroney should surprise everyone and join the Liberals but only after his case is finished (and nothing bad comes out of it). Imagine Mulroney saying that this current party does not represent Canada but an Americanized Canada--or represent the religious right or something. And then, he goes out and endorses Ignatieff as the compromise between the old PC party and Grits. Obviously, the only place he'd be able to endorse him is in Quebec. -
Government introduces tough anti-gang legislation
SSD replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
WestViking, please. What does body piercings have to do with anything? I don't have tattoos, piercings, or illegitimate children and I support the legalization of ganja. Hey I thought conservatives today wanted less government and now you want Harper to protect us from ourselves? I say that if you think we should keep ganja illegal then you should also be on the forefront to criminalize alcohol. Think about it. If I were to smoke marijuana in my own home by myself and relax after a day's work would I be harming anyone? You social conservatives are hypocrites and want to regulate the lives of individuals. You want to control what we wear, who we worship, what we believe. That is exactly the reason I could never support Harper or the Reformatories. The Liberals have always stood for independence of conscience, thought, belief, etc. You social issues have always restricted Canadians from shifting Canada fully right. Think about it, how long in the past 40 years have we had a Conservative majority? Only 8 and those were because the Liberals needed a new generation to come in (just like we see happening now). I really want to know the harm in having pot sold in stores just like cigarettes and alcohol. It would definitely kill that aspect of crime. Imagine, if we could also tax the hell out of it. In one year, we'd have enough money to make surpluses even in hard times. The only problem would be the access to teenagers. I used to think that too but what stops these kids from drinking their parents' supply of alcohol and stealing their father's cigarettes. Marijuana is addicted but cigarettes are even more. I smoked ganja all the time in my twenties, even more than cigarettes. However, when my children were born and I was ready to give them up, I could only kick pot (and easily too). The cigarettes took ten years to get out of my psychological desires. -
I don't see an election happening until the Liberal Convention as it will be one big event to showcase Ignatieff to the nation in May. Then, in June (weeks later) after the second economic progress report, Iggy will bring down the government and ride his momentum to a good victory (maybe even majority). It would be counter-intuitive for the Liberals to have an election before the convention. What is Iggy loses the election? Whats the point of having a love-in, with what I hear as speeches of endorsement from all three former living Liberal P.M.'s and a few prominent golden era Liberals. It could, however, be interesting to have a convention near the start (or better, a few days before) of the campaign. That would really give them momentum but it would cut back at campaigning time.
-
Its time for Iggy to put Harper in his place. Iggy warned Harper. Once these ads start to air, Iggy will lay down the law. Harper, on the other hand, still doesn't know that he's dealing with someone who has been building support for himself from coast to coast to coast ever since he becamse opposition leader.
-
So, what you are telling me is that only social conservatives are real conservatives? What about fiscal conservatives, which you are obviously not. You want to spend, spend, spend on making bigger prisons, bigger police forces, more control over what people do. Its not free you know. I don't see a difference between the way you social conservatives spend (bigger jails, police, and military) and people on the left-centre (money in healthcare, national childcare). Actually, to tell you the truth, since Reagan, all "conservatives" have created bigger deficits than liberals (small l) and it was liberals (including Clinton) who came in to clean up the mess. Oh yeah, Ron Paul IS a conservative--a fiscal conservative. Don't get the definition wrong either. Harper ISN'T a fiscal conservative. Cutting taxes doesn't make you one. Cutting spending, however, is. Only then can you think about cutting taxes.

So are you saying that we shouldn't use adult cells to use in research? That's very backwards of you. Remember, get your terminology and ideas correct. I am not talking about adult stem cells. I am talking about mature cells (like skin cells). Last, these iPS lines for disease will be individual. So if you have alzheimer's, you'll have your own line created over months to fix it--not from someone else.

They are called libertarian conservatives. The GoP party has been elected on these values for decades ever since Goldwater instilled them (since diluted but Bush after he got elected in 2000).
