  1. Meanwhile, back to the topic at hand. Stephen Harper is so unpopular in East Vancouver that people were threatening to boycott a brewery where he held a rally.
  2. Then you're welcome not to read it. Go enjoy yourself in the Trudeau bashing thread instead.
  3. This thread is broader than that. I know that you Harper supporters keep trying to get it killed because you don't like to be reminded just how disgraceful Harper's rule has been.
  4. It's definitely in the top 5 but the stupidest? I don't know - we have have to form a panel of judges.
  5. I get nobody likes the niqab. I'm not crazy about it either. But there are tons of things that people wear that I think are stupid, harmful, oppressive or just plain offensive. That's part of living in an open society. You don't get to control what everyone else does just because you don't agree with it.
  6. Earlier, you implied that her daughter would be oppressed because she would be ridiculed. Now are you saying that it's only oppression when females are ridiculed?
  7. Do you wear spiked high heels? I've never seen a guy wear them and they are clearly a symbol of a male dominated society. Women wear them because they are discriminated against because they are on average, shorter than men, and also due to societal pressure to look a certain way. Further, unlike niqabs, high heels cause demonstrable harm to women. Do you support a ban on high heels? What kind of penalty can we impose? ETA: And do you shave your armpits? Because frankly, that strikes me as a barbaric cultural practice.
  8. Personally, I don't think that a government should impinge on anyone's right to wear what they want unless they can demonstrate harm. And I don't think that you could do that with a niqab so no, I don't think it would be OK. However, I will say that if Harper engaged in a constructive fashion with academics and political opponents (as they did in Quebec), then he wouldn't have looked like he was pandering to bigots. Context is everything. Have you seen the open letter signed by almost 600 academics?
  9. I grew up in a low income family and wore hand-me-downs. I was ridiculed but I never realized that I was oppressed until now. I wonder if I can get compensation from somebody.
  10. Now you're changing your words. Here's what you said earlier (see if you can spot the difference) You're wrong. I never said only the CPC bigoted base supports restricting the niqab. What I said what that Harper is pandering to bigots in his base when he talks of the niqab and advocates for a "barbaric cultural practices" hot line in the middle of an election. I stand by that statement and there is an open letter signed by almost 600 academics that says something similar. Agreed that freedoms can be restricted but generally there must be some demonstration of harm (which is why Harper's stupid, divisive law was struck down in the first place). I'm not sure the law against nudity is the greatest example. It's a throwback to our Victorian past and I'm not sure that it would survive a charter challenge if it was passed today.
  11. And that will be fixed by banning the niqab?
  12. Forcing women who wear it by choice to take it off IS oppression.
  13. As am I. But when you outlaw a symbol, you're now engaging in thought crime. Perfect example. They took the confederate flag down from the state legislature but they didn't outlaw the flag. If we were flying a niqab on the parliament buildings, I'd be in favor or taking it down too. You can think whatever you like about the niqab - but individuals still have rights. And you are not entitled to decide someone else is being oppressed.
  14. You must find it so much easier to debate me when you put words in my mouth. It's an individual right for a woman to wear what she wants. If you deny her that, YOU are the oppressor.
  15. Who said that? It's only oppressive if it isn't a free choice. I keep asking and you keep ignoring the only relevant question. Who the hell are you to decide who is being oppressed?
  16. I'm assuming nothing of the sort. This is a negative stereotype. Like most stereotypes, there may be truth to it but limiting individual choice based on a group stereotype is discriminatory. I'm amazed that I have to explain this to people in 2015!! who are you to say she can't be a functional part of Canadian society? The arrogance! Would you ban the kilt? Lederhosen? The kippah? We live in a pluralistic society and that means we tolerate and embrace differences. You don't have the right to decide whether anyone else is being oppressed.
  17. Brain dead arguments. You're comparing theocracies against secular governments. A fairer comparison would be to Turkey.
  18. I laugh when I read the Conservatives calling strategic voting immoral. Like them gaming the system to have all the power with 39% of the vote is beyond reproach.
  19. And negative stereotypes are a sign of bigotry.
  20. Good luck with that. As long as Lynton Crosby is giving Harper instructions, you can expect more race baiting.
  21. I sure hope they get that barbaric cultural practices hot line going before she does. Otherwise, people might not know who to call.
  22. And because some people who want to deny her individual rights are Muslim, that makes it OK? You guys who want smaller government are kind of particular about what kind of smaller government you want. Regardless, I still haven't seen you present any evidence that she is a fundamentalist. Either present some or we can conclude you are just working off of a negative stereotype.
  23. And now you are calling this woman a fundamentalist, though you clearly know nothing about her. Rule by ignorant stereotype - that's what you seem to favor.
  24. The facts? Have you listened to this woman explain why she chooses to wear the niqab (even though her family advised her not to)? Honestly, the ignorance on this particular issue is astounding. And who are you to decide whether a woman is wearing a niqab because she is oppressed vs because she wants to? If you force her to take it off, how are you any better than her husband who forces her to wear it?
