Harper gave $8 Million in tax dollars to GOP
ReeferMadness replied to cybercoma's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
No kidding. This stinks. Why would Canada give an American Republican organization $8 million? This is outrageous. -
Harper gave $8 Million in tax dollars to GOP

Who needs mainstream media for this? Why did the Harper group give $8 million to the International Republican Institute? -
He (and Lynton Crosby, who has a well-deserved reputation in other countries for race-baiting politics) have been exploiting this for all its worth. In the last few weeks, first it was the niqab at swearing in ceremonies, then the idiotic "barbaric cultural practices" hot line idea, then publicly musing about banning it in the public service. Harper has pushed it for all its worth. He's exploiting the worst tendencies in Canada. Good leaders bring out the best in people. Stephen Harper is not a good leader.

Strategic Voting - It needs to be done
ReeferMadness replied to marcus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Sweet. Bring a friend. -
It's both, actually. Harper has been pushing this button over and over again. And it's been snowballing.

It's sad. Apparently, it takes only one unscrupulous leader to pander to bigots and people will throw our principles under the bus.

Strategic Voting - It needs to be done
ReeferMadness replied to marcus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I'm not sure that the LPC has the most to lose with PR. It depends on their level of popular support and they've had 10 years in the weeds to see that they won't always be on top. They would probably gain most from AV and that's why Trudeau was talking it up. But I think they could see PR as a win. Don't give up - we need more optimists. If you haven't already, join Fair Vote Canada and help push this through. -

I'm with you. If Trudeau wins, we need to hold his feet to the fire. -

Yeah - but with Trudeau, voting reform might be alternative vote - which is not proportional representation. -

I'm still hopeful that a Liberal minority, supported by the NDP will be able to be convinced to implement PR. The Liberals committed to reviewing the voting system. Let's not give up on this. -
Canada's embarrassment at the hands of its regressive government continues. Now The Economist is calling us out for anti-Muslim politics during the election.

I understand that academics and scientists are thinking people - who use intelligence and logic to come to conclusions. And I understand how threatening those things are to Harper and the religious right.

Let's call in the UN to monitor our election.
-
Harper losing the election and being called out for inciting bigotry would be sweet justice.

Yes. Let's all be like "regular people" and dump science. The bible will tell us everything we need to know.

Remember: Friends don't let friends vote Conservative!
-
Long lineups at the polls is only one of the problems I've heard this election. There have been reports of a lot of issues with voter cards, including names and addresses incorrect for people that haven't moved for years and incorrect poll locations. Also, I've heard of at least 2 cases in small communities where Elections Canada have changed from past practices and as a result people have to travel long distances and/or times to vote. Conservatives have a consistent history of cheating on elections. I would hope they wouldn't stoop so low as to mess with Elections Canada.

Oh, this is topical - and worrisome.

Given the Conservatives abandonment of science, many of you might have come to the conclusion that it is no longer relevant in Canada. For those of you who still think science is a good thing, there is a national debate today on CBC's Quirks and Quarks. Representing the CBC will be Gary Goodyear. Seriously, I'm not making this up. Tune in to see if he claims the world is 6,019 years old.

Yes. For some reason, after Harper and his cronies dumped science in favor of religion, now it seems like academics don't have much regard for him.

Vote early. Vote often.

Harper may be a self-proclaimed economic boy wonder. But somehow his platform violates WTO rules. You would think that since the Conservatives have waited until the last minute to release their platform, at least they could have ensured that it made sense.

Strategic Voting - It needs to be done
ReeferMadness replied to marcus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
After watching Harper and his cronies game the system for 10 years, it's just hilarious to watch his supporters whine about strategic voting. -
Look. There's a reason why so many people are talking about strategic voting this election. Harper has alienated most of Canada with the crap he's done. And he's responsible for so many unethical, disgusting actions that it's hard to keep track of all of them. So, that's what this thread is for. If you don't like it, there's lots of other threads that might appeal to you better.
