Yeah. And I'm just wondering why you assume it would go differently this time.
-
A lot of us did, for all the good that did. Did you happen to notice a guy whose party got a plurality? He used prorogation to avoid a confidence vote and then went on a campaign to lie to the people. It wasn't a pretty sight. People didn't seem to notice the fact that he lied through his teeth about the way the system is supposed to work and he got more votes (and seats) next election.

Do you have a more reliable source than Lawrence Solomon? I don't know about what's in this article but a lot of his stuff is straight from Wingnutzville. Here's an example of an an anti-vaxxer editorial. A few years ago, someone sent me something he wrote that was complete conspiracy theory. He found Bing was returning different results from Google and concluded that was "proof" that Google was hiding something.
-
We don't pretty much know that. Did you skip 2008? Or have you just mercifully repressed the memory?

Harper was race-baiting..... and I agree with him?

As we ponder what might be the last of Canada's disastrous experiment with Harper, it's worth considering how he's affected our international reputation. Around the world, people are seeing Canada as a place where racism and intolerance are flourishing. Look at the headlines: I know that those of you who've admitted to being selfish and only caring about money won't mind much that people in other countries are starting to wonder whether Canada is now a land of freezing Ku Klux Klan conventions. But for those of us with a larger view on life can see this is deeply disturbing. Let's put Harper out of our misery on Monday.

Yup. I keep hearing Tory supporters compare government to a company. Like a temporary dictatorship by a highly inflated ego is the way things are supposed to be. You do realize that in theory, the PM is supposed to be accountable to parliament.

I think it's more likely that they thought the Conservatives were likely not to win another majority and they were getting off the ship before it went down. After branding themselves after 1 guy for 10 years, how do you suddenly say "hey we've got a whole team here"?- 203 replies

Huh. And yet your expendable cog branded his entire government on his name ("The Harper Government"), centralized power in the PMO to and unprecedented level and required the caucus to let his PMO know ahead of time if they wished to speak at caucus meetings. As cogs go, it seems like he kind of took over the machine.

And if the Tory base is abandoning him, who are the 30% of people who still think he'd make the best PM?
-
If he loses, he's gone no doubt. If he gets a plurality and he resigns, his poorly informed (and none too bright) base will go ape shit. Most of them think they elect a PM and they won't be happy with someone getting off the bench and being PM suddenly. He's in a much stronger position than Chretien because there's nobody else ATM. Had McKay or someone else with some presence hung around, maybe. But there's nobody. It might be that he leaves in a couple of years - but he could do a lot of damage between now and then. The guy's like Freddie Krueger.
-
3 days before an election?
-
This is why the caucus won't stand up to Harper. His base is completely tone deaf to the reality of what he's done. The people who support Harper could read the G&M editorial and only pay attention to the bit about endorsing the Conservatives; and the write the rest off to "left wing liberal media bias".
-
Maybe they're hoping for Harper to announce his resignation in advance of the election. Wouldn't that be bizarre if a leader could increase his party's support by promising to leave.
-
You're entitled to your own opinion. You're NOT entitled to your own facts. To my knowledge, nobody has established that Gagnier is a lobbyist. ad hominem attack. It's just a red flag that people shouldn't be paying attention to you.
-
Not worth the risk. It's more likely that a stinky transition of power would cause a call for another "stable majority government". Ugh.
-
Completely delusional. Unlike Chretien's situation, there is nobody waiting in the wings. The Conservatives know that when Harper leaves, they're going to have to go through a rebuilding phase.
-
And who is going to toss him? He's a one man show. All the people with any credibility in that party have left. And regardless of what you or I or the G&M think, there are still a HUGE number of Harper fans out there who are still in denial about just how bad he is. Look at the comments in this forum. I'll be happy when I see him beaten and resigned as leader. Not until.
-
Yeah. The caucus will say Harper is out as soon as Harper allows them to speak.
-
So, the story is that Lynton Crosby has ditched the Conservatives as they now prefer the Ford brothers. They've dumped a strategist known for racial politics for a pair of local politicians known for racist statements. Big improvement.

That's a dangerous (and demonstrably untrue) line of thinking. Harper has shown that he will play the game to keep power to the bitter end. Do you really not remember what happened in 2008? The "don't worry be happy" assumption that Harper is just going to waltz into a throne speech, be defeated and the GG is going to call on the Liberals and NDP to form a new government is an unnecessary (and dangerous) risk.
-
Geez, I hope not. These guys need to be sent away to figure themselves out again.

The G&M endorsement editorial is completely delusional. The comments are hilarious though. One asked whether the ballot will be amended to include a choice that says "Conservative but only if Harper resigns".
