Although I'm not a big fan of our criminal system (please don't call it a "justice system"), I'm glad the charge was laid. It sends a message that there are limits to police power, even if not very many. Maybe the next time, someone who's clearly not in his or her right mind is in this situation, the police will look for alternatives to shooting.

According to a new study by Stanford researcher Mark Jacobson, existing alternative energy technology can replace fossil fuels at a roughly comparable cost. This corrects the assertions made by some at MLW that we need fossil fuels for the forseeable future.

Rob Ford, mayor of Toronto UPDATES
ReeferMadness replied to WWWTT's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Ford urged to step down and get help. Yikes. Check out that picture. Nobody has ever accused Ford of being the cutest guy around but he looks like a caricature of himself in this image. He appears to me to be pretty tanked. -
Nice theory but your premise only works in practise if the degree of freedom you're giving up is commensurate with the risk. The FBI has become quite adept at making paper terrorists out of people who are disgruntled and/or mentally ill but lack the capacity to do any real damage. The FBI finds these people, plant a mole who can supply them with "explosives" and suddenly you have headlines about the terrorist plot "foiled" by the FBI. Link

Oh, yeah. The same crowd that set up Guantanamo, declared waterboarding an "enhanced interrogation technique", and practises extraordinary rendition could totally be trusted with Snowden's rights. You a funny guy, Derek.

AW, I've reviewed the postings and I think I've fairly characterized things.

Read the use of force chart. Deadly force is allowed only where the subject is likely to cause serious harm or death. Or are you abandoning Officer Trigger Happy?
-
And you won't have any idea if you don't make the effort to understand. Here's a recap: You said: Binney said that Snowden should come back to the US and stand trial I said: Binney actually said that Snowden should come back to stand trial only after those responsible for the NSA spying program (all the way up to the president) stand trial first. Unlike you, I provided a link to prove it You said: Binney said that Snowden is transitioning to a traitor The last statement has nothing to do with whether Snowden comes back to stand trial. You've dragged it in because clearly because you don't really like what Binney is saying in totality - that although Snowden might be taking this too far (Binney's views, not mine), the actions of the NSA and those who sanctioned it are far worse. So, instead of debating honestly, you're cherry picking and quoting Binney out of context of the debate.
-
Well, you are transitioning from honest debate to something less than that. Not only are you cherry-picking Binney's words, you're using them out of context. When Binney said that Snowden is transitioning to a traitor, it had nothing to do with Snowden's refusal to surrender himself to his persecutors. Binney felt that Snowden was crossing a line when he started talking about the US hacking into China. Binney was quite happy to have Snowden talk about the NSA illegally spying on US citizens.

I'm suggesting that you go back to that use of force chart you keep posting and read it. In order for deadly force to be justified, the subject must be "likely to inflict serious bodily harm or death". In this case, Sammy would have had to emerge from the streetcar and come down the stairs with 2 cops with their guns trained on him. And if that isn't enough, there's another 20 milling around with their thumbs up their butts. He has to come through the streetcar door so that's the only point they have to control. It's ridiculous to say that he's likely to cause serious harm or death while he's still in the streetcar. Only you and AW seem oblivious to this.

The price of these useless birds was always a case of 3 card monte. It was dependent on the development costs and how many were sold and the price of tea in India and 38 other factors. The pricing algorithm was no doubt designed by the same Wall Street boys who specialized in mortgage backed securities.
-
Oh, you mean like when a guy armed with nothing more than a knife is seen as a mortal threat to 22 armed cops? Nah, even Hollywood couldn't be that stupid.
-
Why don't we hear Binney in his own words instead of yours? Fast forward to the end of the segment. Binney says that Snowden should be prosecuted but only after the administrations (up to and including the President and Vice President), the heads of NSA and so on.
-
What is known is that the NSA is manipulating the US's position as a major internet hub to spy on the citizens of the world. And the reason that we know that is that Edward Snowden told us. And now he's being persecuted by the same people who are reading my emails. Edward Snowden should be free. It's the people chasing him who belong in jail.
-
Bradley Manning would no doubt see things differently. As does Daniel Ellsberg.
-
We all owe this guy big time. The NSA isn't just spying on Americans, they're spying on all of us. And all of us need to wake up to what has being going on. Since 9/11 gave control-freaks everywhere the excuse to step up spying and control of the population, all of our liberties are at risk.

Carbon Tax Reduces CO2 Without Harming Economy
ReeferMadness replied to ReeferMadness's topic in Business and Economy
When globalization was in its infancy, environmental and labour groups predicted that companies would relocate to jurisdictions where regulations were less and labour was cheapest, thus putting downward pressure on environmental and labour regulations in developed countries. This was called the race to the bottom. The idea was poo-pooed by economists at the time but that's exactly what happened. -
Carbon Tax Reduces CO2 Without Harming Economy
ReeferMadness replied to ReeferMadness's topic in Business and Economy
So, this is it? Your evidence of the "constant tightening of laws" is a couple of chemicals that took decades to ban during the 60's through the 90's? And the banning of the poison you'd like to put on your lawn that continues to evolve (and probably will for another decade or more)? Wow, sounds like runaway regulation to me. What about all of the chemicals that have been introduced since? -

Carbon Tax Reduces CO2 Without Harming Economy
ReeferMadness replied to ReeferMadness's topic in Business and Economy
I thought he was pushing the old "Countries with stronger economies have better environments" chestnut. -
I'm sure it comes as a great disappointment to Mr. Snowden that you're not fond of him. Perhaps you'd rather he hung around like Bradley Manning to be put in isolation and have a show trial? You'd prefer that he sacrificed his entire life so that you could have your leak and be fond of him as well? It must have been a very difficult choice on his part - your admiration or his freedom.

Python kills children in New Brunswick
ReeferMadness replied to Boges's topic in Political Philosophy
Apparently, only if you allowed it to be stolen. -
Techically, it might be still going but it's no longer the same thread. It's mutated. I guess that says something about the nature of the universe.
