Carbon Tax Reduces CO2 Without Harming Economy
ReeferMadness replied to ReeferMadness's topic in Business and Economy
I'm not sure how anyone could "shut down the modern economy". Even putting those words down is silly. However, there is lots of evidence that wealthy countries are exporting their environmental problems to those very same countries that you worry will have us for lunch. -
Carbon Tax Reduces CO2 Without Harming Economy

Where is your evidence of these stricter environmental regulations? -
Why don't you try it and let us know how it turns out?

Wannabe hippies descend on Vancouver Island

Seems to be 2 divergent views on this: This is a ridiculous event by a band of destructive lemmings that leave a trail of destruction every where they go There probably won't be that many people and the group is used to treading lightly and ususally leaves sites in better condition than they found them -
Carbon Tax Reduces CO2 Without Harming Economy
ReeferMadness replied to ReeferMadness's topic in Business and Economy
Why not reduce all of them? In a lot of cases, the same activities that create sulfur and other emissions also create CO2. Fossil fuels have been too cheap for too long and it is resulted in ridiculous, unsustainable lifestyles. -

I don't agree. Most environmental organizations don't agree. But you're welcome to your opinion. -

As little as I can manage. It wouldn't bother me if gas prices doubled. Or tripled. -

I suspect it's coal mining. -

I suppose you'll just have to agree to disagree with the economists who studied the tax. We'll never know if the Liberals "green shift" would have sucked or not because it will never be implemented. Personally, I thought Stephane Dion is much too honest and has too much integrity to be a political leader. Unlike people who get elected, he was honest about what he wanted to do. For that he got pulverized. -

Certainly, carbon taxes (or any other form of carbon pricing or regulation) is going to disproportionately affect energy producing regions. That's unavoidable. However, that's only because wildly excessive and irresponsible use of fossil fuels in the first place has artificially boosted these economies. -
Python kills children in New Brunswick
ReeferMadness replied to Boges's topic in Political Philosophy
well, that's a mighty big "if", isn't it? There have been plenty of guys where were "responsible gun owners" until one day they lost it and their wives and/or kids wind up dead. No doubt the snake owner in New Brunswick would have been characterized as a responsible animal owner until this week. Now, I'm guessing not that many people would characterize him that way. And how many guys have been "responsible dog owners" until their pride and joy got loose and killed the neighbor's kids? It's pretty difficult to define who is responsible, much less legislate that only those people can own dangerous weapons or animals. It's much simpler and safer to simply outlaw the animals or weapons that are likely to cause the most damage. And yes, the state does, acting on behalf of the citizens, have the right to impose restrictions on what you can and can't own. Sorry. -
I must be ahead of my time. It seems like I've always been cashless.

I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either.

I'm sick of debating this one so I'm just going to say what I would like to see happen and what probably will happen: What I would like to see happen: Critical examination of each of the 3 incidents as detailed by Ross McLean (the decision to fire the first 3 shots, the decision to keep on firing and the decision to use the taser Serious review of officers conduct focusing on whether the police adequately attempted to avoid the use of violence through de-escalation tactics Exploration of whether the police could have waited for the taser before the shooting started Critical examination as to why other six shots were fired when suspect was still down Determination as to whether taser was really necessary after 9 shots were fired Review of who was in command and how that command was exercised (it wasn't apparent from the video that any one officer was in control - the cops appeared to mill around aimlessly) Recommendations and changes that encourage police to use non-violent means to de-escalate these situations (better training, better leadership, more openness and accountability) Based on what Ross McLean said and past experience, here is what I suspect will happen The only testimony offered up by other police will be that which exonerates the shooter The SIU will focus only on whether the officer behaved according to the chart that Derek posted On the basis of that chart, the SIU will find that the officers were in mortal danger and there will be no charges recommended Chief Blair will shrug his shoulders and defend his officers In short, the system will defend its own and next time a deranged kid does something stupid, he will be executed by another cop.

It's funny... I don't remember this song from when the band was in its heyday but I think this song rocks..... and it makes me think about how life flies by.

Thanks, Kimmy. I haven't heard these guys before but I like them.

I think it's a couple of things: Men are naturally lazy and you don't have to stop and mix a beer It's too easy to overdo it on hard liquor and wind up embarrassing yourself Beer keeps on tasting good. Sweeter liquors like coolers and ciders get sickening after a couple. my 2 cents.

My all-time favorite beer name is "The Backhand of God Stout". Honestly, I thought the beer itself was kind of overdone (you could almost chew it like porridge) but I had to try it when I saw the name.

Python kills children in New Brunswick
ReeferMadness replied to Boges's topic in Political Philosophy
I heard a couple of things about this incident on the radio on my way home: This type of snake is known for being quite aggressive, as constricting snakes go. Although keeping this type of snake is not allowed under current NB laws, this particular snake was "grandfathered" (presumably he had it when the law was instituted) The two boys had spent the day at the farm interacting with farm animals. It was suggested that this caused the boys to smell like food to the snake. To me it seems risky to have an apartment upstairs from where dangerous reptiles are kept but you have to admit this is a bit of a freak incident. Very sad, though. I can't imagine what the parents must be going through. -
Most economists say that sales taxes are a more efficient way to collect taxes than income taxes.

Law and Order in America
ReeferMadness replied to Scotty's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Revolting. Police just have way too much power. -
You claimed that Sammy was not behaving rationally - most people would agree with that. However, I think that the cop who fired almost an entire clip within the space of a minute lost control and wasn't behaving very rationally either. Nor is it very rational to suggest that a kid who's been shot at short range with a hollow point bullet and is lying on his back is suddenly going to leap to his feet and do injury to armed police who are shooting at him.

In most cases, it's not that people have problems because they use drugs - people use drugs because they have problems. Drugs don't make things better but they are more often the effect than the cause. I've often heard people say things like "alcohol makes so-and-so violent". I think that it's more true that alcohol allows the anger inside the person to come out.

I suppose he could have just sprouted wings and few away. It seems like not many people who've seen this have been entirely rational. Certainly not the one doing all of the shooting.
