Canadians FEAR Trump...Big Time
ReeferMadness replied to bush_cheney2004's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Take a look at this New York Times writeup from 1922 about Adolph Hitler and see if it reminds you of anyone. -
So, I don't pay attention to producers and directors - but can you honestly tell the difference? I think most of what comes out of hollywood is schlock, with the occasional gem.

I can only speak for me but I find women of all skin tones attractive. But seriously, is this still 1955?
-
Aren't you also playing into stereotypes when you imply that white men can't make movies that would appeal to other demographics?

W. T. F. Mind being more specific? I'd like to know exactly what features about black people you find unattractive.

You want to talk about welfare? The biggest welfare recipients in this country are the fossil fuel companies. They pay a pittance for the resource, pollute the land, air and water, skew the economy, drive the dollar up artificially and compromise the climate and environment for future generations. Everyone knows that when we burn fossil fuels, we're mortgaging the future and yet, there is this relentless mindless drumbeat of nonsense. Walk away. Think independently. You can do it. -

No. You've missed my point entirely. The carbon tax in BC was implemented as a tool to reduce emissions and it had exactly that effect. However, it was implemented without in isolation and it is only a small carbon tax. So, it has had some effect but not as much as it could have if it were more substantial and the revenue were directed towards other carbon cutting programs. I've clipped the rest of your post because it was clear that it was all based on your mistaken interpretation of my statements. -

And yet the fossil fuel industry is almost undoubtedly the most heavily subsidized in history. Everyone - Tim thinks you should dump your oil stocks because they're not worth investing in. Go figure. -
Who will Trump pick for VP in 2016?

David Duke? Sarah Palin? Jerry Fallwell Jr? Maybe Cliven Bundy? This is a country with a wealth of nutbars so his choices are nearly endless. -

Renewable energy is the next growth industry and Canada is gradually being left behind. Backward thinking politician like Premier Wall don't get that today's fossil fuel industry is like the horse buggy industry was 150 years ago. We need to look ahead. -

That's nonsense. In BC, the carbon tax was revenue neutral. They implemented the carbon tax and lowered income taxes to offset. It would have been better if they had taken the proceeds and invested them into green projects but they didn't. The endless complaints about tax grabs are just noise. Taxes have been going down in this country for a generation. -

Carbon taxes work but only in proportion to their size. In BC, there is a modest carbon tax and we've seen a modest decrease in gasoline consumption. A $15 carbon tax is not going to save the world from itself. And carbon taxes are a tool, not an on/off switch. They have to be used correctly and in conjunction with other tools. In BC, the carbon tax would have been more effective if the proceeds had been used to invest in lowering emissions further than simply lowering income taxes. Other tools include incentives for specific investments (e.g. making your home more energy efficient) and research funding into clean energy. Canada could easily have 100% clean electricity with existing technology and only modest price impacts. The four provinces with large hydroelectric resources (BC, Manitoba, Quebec and Newfoundland & Labrador) are spread across the country and could provide baseload. Extra power could be provided by solar, wind and geothermal. Prices of solar and wind continue to drop and in fact some of the cheapest new power in the world right now is being supplied by solar and wind. The problem is inter-provincial squabbling. The best solar power power resources in Canada are in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan - provinces currently heavily dependent on the dirty fossil fuel industry. And the large provincial utilities that supply Canada's power need to be pushed to adapt to distributed power generation and cooperate with other provinces. But the biggest problem is lack of world governance. Everyone (aside from a small percentage of persistent deniers) knows that we need to deal with emissions. However, there is a "you go first" attitude across the world. Only Europe so far has shown leadership. It can be done. When trade deals are negotiated, the rules are firm, adoption is mandatory and sanctions are painful. We need to use the same model for environmental deals. -

Meh. What's fringe? Everything was fringe before it became mainstream. You go ahead and live in the past while the rest of the world embraces clean energy. The fact that even Harper appointed lackeys flunked them so badly shows what a poor culture they have. That they swept the expert whistle blower's concerns under the rug during an election time period changes nothing. Your response seems a little over the top. I think that, like most Albertans, you're afraid that I'm right. You're afraid that the price of dirty energy isn't going to come back to what it was. You're afraid that the world will move on and all that lovely biotoxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, flammable sludge will have to stay in the ground. I'm sure you're very busy praying that the price of biotoxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, flammable sludge will rise again soon! -
:D Time is going by really, really, really, really slow.

They're a polling firm that apparently can recognize which side of the bread is buttered. Yes, the Montreal Institute which won't list its donors (and so there's no way of telling who really paid for this useless poll). It's safe to assume it was paid for by the industry, probably Trans Canada, since it was clearly designed to produce a result that they wanted. What it actually says is that a majority of Quebeccers prefer western oil to oil somewhere else. But it says nothing about whether a majority of Quebeccers might prefer clean, safe energy to dirty, dangerous, environmental destructive energy. In fact, if it pointed out how dirty your sludge was, it might even have revealed a different result on western oil vs say, Saudi oil. And, strangely enough, it asked nothing about the Energy East pipeline. Maybe not so strange once you figure out who bought the poll and why. -

Seems like you're not too happy I called out your ridiculously poor excuse for a poll. And we'll never know what Leger did or didn't ask because the propaganda rag that printed the story didn't link to the full poll. But based on the questions asked, it appears to have been designed to provide cover for Trans Canada. And we can't know who really paid for it because the Montreal Institute doesn't reveal its funding sources. It's pretty transparent though. It doesn't take much intelligence to see what's going on here. -

And you seem to think that they have the right to demand that other parts of Canada subsidize them by risking their drinking water, local economy and health and welfare for their profits. Funny how you guys are so against subsidies except when it comes to the oil industry. Then, they don't have to pay for anything. -

Ruptured pipelines is just one of a long list of problems with the fossil fuel industry. Maybe you've noticed the huge economic dislocation recently caused almost entirely by wildly gyrating oil prices. Yes, of course there have been positives due to fossil fuels - that's why we've used them. The problem is that the profits have been privatized while the costs have been mainly dumped across time and space. If fossil fuels were priced to factor in the real costs, they would disappear in a few decades. But currently, we have a premier in Canada throwing a temper tantrum over even a moderate price on carbon.
