Scientist protest song....its a hit!
ReeferMadness replied to Topaz's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
In a very broad sense. And he is critiquing government policy, not his department's policies or practices. -

Why would they? The Harper echo chamber listens to nothing but the words of their one true savior. -

I don't expect you to get this but there is a material difference between talking about your job and general political commentary. If this scientist was complaining about his department, how he was managed, how they studied birds, that would be different. But he is entitled to critique his government for government policies, regardless of whether he works for the government. If he was a senior official or political appointee, that would be different. But he's a scientist studying migratory birds. His job has nothing to do with his protest. Now can you get it? No? -

See? I told you. Right wingers don't see any difference between the PM and the CEO. They're both dictators. -

You're wasting your time with this crowd. Harper isn't accountable to anyone. He's the "boss". -
Scientist protest song....its a hit!
ReeferMadness replied to Topaz's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
This, in a nutshell, is how right wingers see the Prime Minister. He's like a CEO. And a CEO is a dictator of the company. And if you say anything bad about the CEO, of course you will get fired. Because nobody offends the dictator. It's why they get so outraged when the Supreme Court won't let him impose whatever legislation he wants, regardless of how badly it contravenes the constitution. It's why they don't understand how incensed thinking people get at how Harper has undermined our democratic institutions. It's why they don't get how disgraceful it is when the PM has public fights with independent agencies who are supposedly accountable to parliament. It's why they defend our first past the post electoral system. They don't want democracy. Not in any real form. They just want to vote for a dictator every 4 years. After that, they don't need to do anything. Just whine for 4 more years until they pick the next CEO. -
Is Mulcair and trudeau's carbon tax a good thing?
ReeferMadness replied to PIK's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Which is another way of saying you have no evidence that carbon taxes have any negative impact. -
Scientist protest song....its a hit!
ReeferMadness replied to Topaz's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Based on what has been reported, he did nothing to associate himself with his public service job. And exactly how public and visible is the study of migratory birds? This appears to be a case of some idiot in the government overstepping and stifling legitimate freedom of speech. I know you and the rest of the Harper echo chamber would prefer to not be reminded of all of Harper's corrupt activities. But freedom of speech still exists. -

You're wrong. As usual. Government employees don't give up their rights to engage in political activity. I look forward to the Government of Canada explaining to a judge how this song impairs Tony Turner's ability to study birds. And you're welcome to hold whatever ridiculous views you like. But it would be nice if you did some research before sharing them here. -
Is Mulcair and trudeau's carbon tax a good thing?
ReeferMadness replied to PIK's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I asked you if you had a citation that addressed the carbon tax. Since you responded with a snotty personal attack, I can safely assume the answer is no. The BC carbon tax was implemented to be revenue neutral. So, costs went up and taxes went down. The effect is to motivate companies and individuals to use the savings to find less energy intensive ways to to the things they do. In BC it worked. -

ReeferMadness replied to Topaz's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
If he used his job as a platform to promote his song; or if his ability to perform his job was somehow compromised by this song, I could see the action. But this guy studies migratory birds. He's due to retire shortly so clearly the action is not aimed at him. It's intended to put a chill in the civil service and prevent others from engaging in political activity. Because you can bet your last dollar that the vast majority of the civil service would like nothing more than to see the back of Harper leaving for good. I hope it goes to court. There is no way this can stand. -

You haven't made any arguments. You posted a link that said that higher input costs might hurt competitiveness? Really? Wow, that's genius! Your citation made no mention of carbon taxes. None. Try finding a relevant link. -

Tony Turner has been suspended from his job for this. This seems like a very questionable move by the Government of Canada. This man should have the right to express his political views in his own time. I see this as a freedom of speech issue. Just another example of the Conservative government muzzling people. -

Sure, you just listen to the Harper echo chamber and pull stuff out of your butt. -

Maybe you could be a bit more dilgent in your research. If you searched the entire web, I doubt you could find a less reliable source on which to base your fears than Lorrie Goldstein. Here is what he said on August 1. So, which is it? Is the sky falling or can we count on Harper and Trudeau to ignore their environmental promises? In fact, I looked at the Liberal Party website and couldn't find much of anything on carbon pricing. I did find a story online where he said he'd try to set a national standard and but let the promises determine how they met them. Before you get your knickers in a knot, maybe you could do a little research. -

So, I doubt you do but if you actually want to understand how the carbon tax has worked in BC, read this. I know that doesn't mesh with what breathless hyperbolic right wing columnists tell you. -
Canada Needs Direct Election Of The Prime Minister
ReeferMadness replied to Exegesisme's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That's a lovely sentiment. How do you suggest we find these MP's that are not so venal and chicken? The parties have captured the system and the leaders have captured the parties.- 195 replies

We've had a carbon tax in BC for years. I haven't seen the resulting apocalypse yet. -
So, we all know that terrorist is a political designation and one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. You have two sided fighting. When the "good guys" kill the "bad guys", it's OK. But if the "bad guys" kill the "good guys", it's a crime? What kind of war is that? But what were armies doing there in the first place? To get bin Laden? That's crazy because the Taliban offered to hand him over to a neutral third country for trial. To conquer terrorism? Nice job, now we have ISIS. To help the cause of women? Don't make me laugh. They invaded a country because George Bush had an excuse. And George Bush needed a war so he would get re-elected. And if this alleged crime took place on Afghan soil, why was he sent to Guantanamo? The answer is clear. The entire operation was legally questionable and they made up the rules as they went along. If that widow wants to sue someone maybe she should start with dubya and the American government. So, he was a child when he did whatever he did. Clearly that doesn't mean anything to you but in Canadian law it has some implications.

This is just a lame attempt to control language. And as for the claim that Canadian neocons are left of Democrats, well, whatever.

Should the RCMP question the PM?
ReeferMadness replied to Topaz's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It can't be that simple. If it were, those Harper guys would just do it. What, with all their integrity. -
Should the RCMP question the PM?
ReeferMadness replied to Topaz's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Doesn't it get a little old continually blaming Harper's problems on what other PM's did? Wasn't he elected to clean up Ottawa? And how many PM's personally dictated to their lawyers the rules for senate residency? -

So your claim is that Harper didn't bother checking whether Duffy was a resident of PEI before he appointed him? -
Is Suicide An Act Of Bravery Or Cowardice
ReeferMadness replied to Big Guy's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
I have to say that I find the title and tone of this thread tasteless and offensive. I've never thought of the people I've known who've committed suicide or attempted suicide as heroes or cowards. I've just remembered them for who they were in life. Suicide is like anything else. People do it for all different reasons. Trying to generalize is ridiculous.
