  1. What about slavery? Should we keep some institutions related to it? Destroy the country? I don't think so. If anything - that would strenghten our ties with Quebec... and maybe loosen them with BC.
  2. Yet we still bow to them. As long as we're not the last... You mean someone who was born in Canada, lives in Canada and is of Canadian ancestry? That changes nothing. You go tell them that And so it is. So is a penitentiary, without the FREEDOM part. The places are good. That doesn't change what monarchy symbolizes, which is the opposite of democratic values. Thank you. With the help of millions of new immigrants that have the same ideas about monarchy as I do, we'll shape it to fit the described image.
  3. We'll see about that. Who are they going to bow to? King Charles? Queen Camilla? What about us? Are we going to bow to any of the above? The lack of knowledge of history didn't prevent anyone from making history. The Canadian allegiance to British Monarchy should be history.
  4. End links to British monarchy: Australian PM http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2010/08/17/australia-monarchy-end.html#socialcomments Finally - a commonwealth country realizes they're not a colony anymore and don't have to bow to foreign masters! I was hoping Canada would be the first to renounce the ties, but the least we could do is follow the lead. Let's be honest - who needs the English queen here? - The First Nations? They were all but exterminated by the British invaders; - Quebec? I'm sure they're grateful there's no more New France; - Millions of immigrants? Swearing loyalty to the British queen to become a citizen of Canada seems at best absurd. We have grown as a nation and have built our society around values such as FREEDOM and EQUALITY. Monarchy stands for the exact opposite - SERVITUDE and INEQUALITY. It is time for us to relinquish the ties to the dark colonial past and become the nation we are meant to be - a country of the 21st century where immigrants from all nations live peacefully side by side and work together to make their homeland an example for the rest of the world.
  5. Apparently you could be OK if you move to Halton Hills, together with Mr.C and md00 Should I post this 3 times too or you're gonna get it on the first try?
  6. At the very least Dion won his seat. And yes, he also ran with something he claimed he believes into.
  7. Protect him from whom? The journalists? The press? The people he represents?
  8. I've been saying that for a while...
  9. Being an immigrant I can still simpatize with this question - we're struggling paying $800+ / month for a part-time (3 days / week) daycare for our kid. Of course your slur against immigrants only shows how limited you are... But your idea of nationalized daycare - I'm for it 110%. I'd like to have 4 kids. My wife sais we can't afford even the second... The only feasible choice is to try to make more money... which is kind of hard, especially now when people are losing jobs - I'd be happy just to be able to keep my current one... I heard Quebec has $5 / day daycare available... not bad for a have-not province... if this is true - we're screwed twice over because we can't afford kids while sponsoring them in another province...
  10. Congratulations! You're all grown up now BTW, it's still safe to have kids for men in their 50's
  11. Thank you! That is very good - with the small correction that true Communism cannot be achieved in any separate country or group of countries - for it to happen there should be no borders and the world has to be whole. Oh, and these countries like North Korea - that's Totalitarianism stemming from Socialism.
  12. I believe the North American one is a permanent resident of North Pole, the West-European one lives in Laplandia and the Russian Ded Moroz - in Siberia.
  13. Those Icelandic flags may become relics as the country is about to be bought at a wholesale price
  14. I guess things have changed a bit: - Every sixth home owner in US owes more than their property is worth and the prices or real estate keep declining; - 50% of the houses on US market are foreclosures...
  15. Can you believe that was less than a month and a half ago?
  16. LoL I didn't mean to BASH the US... just made an energy-related remark
  17. Isn't PepsiCo American? BTW - it made its way into Socialist countries way before the original cola.
  18. It appears that your capacity of drawing conclusions from facts is inactive. The origin of this celebration has got nothing to do with Christianity, Romans or Coca-Cola.
  19. Surprisingly the price at the pump actually went UP a bit today. I thought the general rule was price per liter is the price per barrel of oil but in cents + 10-15 cents on top: If price of barrel is $120 we paid $1.20 + .13 = 1.33 at the pump; Shouldn't the price of $63 per barrel translate into .73 - .78 per liter of regular gas? So what does that mean exactly? When the CAD was down 4-5 years ago the gas price was also down. But now the CAD goes down and the price goes up? But in Canada we're running both: the dollar goes down - inflation and the price of oil goes down (with the recession) - deflation. What will happen to the prices?
  20. Celebration of new year (Christmas) dates back much further - it derived from an old pagan winter feast: The modern English word Yule likely derives from the word yoole, from 1450, which developed from the Old English term geōl and geōla before 899. The term has been linked to and may originate from the Old Norse Jōl, which refers to a Germanic pagan feast lasting 12 days that was later Christianized into Christmas.[4] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yule
  21. I'm not against them - not being religious I still come from a country with a very strong Christian Orthodox tradition. But apparently the "Christ" part of Christmas is insulting to Jews and Muslims and as such is not used as a greeting in big companies. Same goes for Easter. The Islam momentum should not be underestimated. At this point in time Christianity is not putting up enough of a fight globally or domestically and is losing ground.
  22. I really liked Manley too, too bad he lost to Martin and isn't running anymore. Now I'm rooting for Ignatieff.
  23. When did you become a moderator? This isn't even your thread I brought it up as an alternative technology to nuclear power.
  24. I didn't say "overthrow English". I said "become a state language" just like English and French. I'm sure the Quebequois Chinese won't (btw, their French is usually horrible, much worse than Chinglish)
