World Might Blow Up or Something Today
PoliticalCitizen replied to Ontario Loyalist's topic in Health, Science and Technology
Ah yes, the Large Hardon Collider Did you know that according to modern particle physics there are 16 basic particles? 6 quarks, 6 leptons and 4 bosons... all have been discovered (with 7 predicted before the discovery) except for the Higgs Boson - the particle of gravity (graviton). They're hoping to find it using this new accelerator... Oh, as to the black hole - if it happens it will be extremely small with its life expectancy in microseconds... -

Open warfare in South Ossetia

It appears that you're ignoring simple logic - even if ALL of Georgia's population that can fight would be drafted Russia would still crush this army without too much of an effort. Georgian army was assembled, trained and equipped specifically for the purpose of taking the 2 provinces back BY FORCE. Russia is asking EU to introduce an arms embargo for Georgia. No amount of provocations can justify the military onslaught of Georgian army on Tshinval. -
Open warfare in South Ossetia

Hey jbg, I honestly am proud of America too (not as a citizen but as part of the human race). For a long while, back when I live in USSR it was a clandestine symbol of freedom and progress and all things that are cool, like jeans, rock'n'roll, Coca-Cola and chewing gum. Then - cars, computers, space shuttles... lots of things to be proud of. But believe me that inter-ethnic conflicts are possible everywhere, especially once the central government fails as it did in USSR. Let me give you a scenario: - Imagine the colonists have not exterminated all Indians but instead gave them 2 or 3 states, enforced the federal laws and build infrastructure etc. - At the same time imagine that a few state at the South are Spanish-speaking and one at the North is French, but all of them have English as the state language - Now imagine that because of an crysis of unknown nature (I don't want to give anybody any ideas) the US government fails and most states decide to go independent - The 3 Indian states immediately begin fighting one another and the rest of the neighboring states - The Spanish states unite and start ethnic cleansing to get rid of English-speaking population - The French state gets invaded by neigboring English states to pay back for some last-century conflict - Etc. etc. etc. You get the picture... -
Well AG, you should probably know it better than me - please state the official reason that NATO used to attack Afghanistan. I'm sorry to say it but all these infrastructure improvements may go the way of the Soviet-built railroad and tunnel as soon as NATO withdraws. I understand the Good Will part is genuine... But look at a US ally in the region - Pakistan. It's pretty far from a real "Democracy", and it aids Taliban who is the "enemy". I don't think it will last in Afghan... Any Western-style society is artificial there and will collapse as soon as the occupant armies withdraw. "Rigths and freedoms" are worthless if they are brought by an invading force. I never argued the financial side. It is the senseless loss of human lives on both sides...

Why do we have a Governor General?
PoliticalCitizen replied to PoliticalCitizen's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Well the country is OURS now as well... once more immigrants get into politics I'm sure the Monarchy and the associated Governors will be questioned. -
Why do we have a Governor General?

Oh, please... I said whatever I had to say, and so did hundreds of thousands of fellow immigrants. That doesn't mean that I can't question the purpose or the value of the Constitutional Monarchy. I'm sure I'm not the only one whom this oath struck as absurd and archaic... -
Angus, I'm a Canadian, not a Russian. In the other thread I took a hardline pro-Russian stance only because of how unilateral Western media was presenting the conflict. As to the weakening of the NATO - I do believe European Countries can get a EU military alliance that would better defend their interests instead of subserving USA's. I also believe Canada's and Mexico's places are with US. But that doesn't mean that we should agree to any military action no matter how poor the justification.

Now this version I agree with the most. We went in as part of NATO, but the NATO cause was false and therefore we should be free of further obligation. If memory serves me right the cause was to defeat Taliban who was ALLEGEDLY protecting Osama bin Laden who was ALLEGEDLY responsible for the 9/11 attacks. This is when Washington's strategists came up with the brilliant idea of punishing countries that protect terrorists by attacking them. Now this "Osama" figure appears to be a relative of Santa Claus - everybody knows about him but nobody has ever seen him... Hardly a worthy cause for our soldiers to die in a foreign country while killing local population. US can continue their "War on Truth" until their voters smarten up... But we have to have our chance to vote against this senseless struggle... I have said it before and I'll say it again: there's nothing to be found in Afghanistan but pain, suffering and death for all who go there... just check the country's history... no railroads... barely any roads... they are as far from "Democracy" or even from any form of western civilization as can possibly be... and they will fight any attempts to bring "Civilization" and "Democracy" to them by force to the death... kids at 7 handle AKs professionally... AKs are on their national rug ornaments... you get the picture.

I definitely agree with that part. Was it really? Since when NATO took on the task of "Stabilizing" defunct countries? And if that would be true, how come we're not "Stablizing" Somalia? It needs that sorely... Last time I looked at the results of NATO's interventions in the world "De-stabilizing" would describe the results much more accurately...
