  1. I disagree. In the past, we received far more. Canada has lots of space. We Canadians can receive 400,000 or about 1% of our current population. ---- In the 1890s. OTOH, we accepted "Ukrainians" (Galicians, Ruthenians, Slovaks, Poles etc) while sending French-Canadians south. Google: Clifford Sifton ==== At issue is how we bring these people into our Canadian world.
  2. Herbie, you miss my point. IME, many Asians do not understand sarcasm. They rarely if ever understand irony. ===== But we Europeans (Westerners) use knives to eat.
  3. Robosmith - you're an AI whatever. ===== Knock, knock.
  4. I strongly disagree. Nationalist. Google Creative Destruction Or try Wikipedia and Luddite
  5. We are getting data on how many ballots have been submitted by hand, in person (or received by mail) according to registration. Is there any data on choice after exit? Post hand-in, post mail-in? Aside from registration, how have these people voted? ===== Side Note: As a Canadian, this American "registration" is truly weird.
  6. Eh? Around the world, since 1990 or so, from Vietnam to China to Russia to, uh, Albania, countries have opened to foreigners. More people live better.
  7. You Americans defeated the Soviets; you won the Cold War. America now has a different role to play in this world.
  8. The speech later became known as "The New Frontier." In his remarks, then Senator Kennedy famously states, "The New Frontier of which I speak is not a set of promises-- it is a set of challenges. It sums up not what I intend to offer the American people, but what I intend to ask of them." https://www.jfklibrary.org/learn/about-jfk/historic-speeches/acceptance-of-democratic-nomination-for-president This link needs subtitles.
  9. Some books are stories. Other books are a way of thinking.
  10. Hey kids, copy and Google search: Erik Nielsen MP Neil Macdonald CBC
  11. Disagree. Some people eat food with fingers (India) or with sticks (China). We in the West require a knife.
  12. Disagree. JFK ran on the slogan "New Frontier". ==== McGovern and Trump/Vance want America to come home.
  13. As a foreigner, I'm struggling to see the difference between McGovern and Trump. What's the difference?
  14. Disagree. Strongly. ===== Rather, you Americans are now voting the way that we Canadians submit our census forms.
  15. Harris and the Democrats will never do such things. Trump is the kind of guy who thinks outside the box. ====== The US has government debt (federal/state/local) over 150% of GDP and rising. US governments are borrowing more than GDP is rising. In the US, the government debt ratio to GDP is rising. This is not sustainable. US governments are a Ponzi scheme. === US governments (federal, state) must cut spending or raise taxes.
  16. Rebound, Pelosi? Clueless. You have no idea how parliamentary democracy works.
  17. https://www.ian-leslie.com/p/why-margaret-thatcher-didnt-jump Pierre Trudeau was born in 1919. Margaret Thatcher in 1925. ===== Kamala Harris was born in 1964 - after the wars.
  18. I read books as if the writer was speaking to me. I listen to Hugo, Balzac, Dickens - as if they were on Audible mp3. ===== I have never listened to/read Macchiaveli this way.
  19. Modern English is surely easier to understand than PHP. For example, what is the difference between: if x === y and if x == y and I am confused with x != y
  20. I had a chat with a colleague. We reckoned that: -LLM was based/trained on Wikipedia -Copilot was based/trained on stackoverflow Let's see.
  21. It is not simple to use words in a language. Across languages? I think John Lennon should have won the Nobel Prize; not Dylan.
  22. The Prince is one of the few older texts that made sense to me. It is not satire. I have tried Plato and Aristotle but I saw obvious flaws. My favourite is Adam Smith. And Hume. Never understood Wordsworth. Or that guy who ran off to Corfu. ===== Balzac is better than Dickens. Tolstoi is good. But the best of all is Hugo. Characters and story-telling at their prime, weekly publications to literate readers. Netflix before daytime TV.
  23. The population is about 50/50 so we have different washrooms for each group. One of the main points in my OP is that architects seem to interpret this to mean that the square footage of each group (M/F) should be the same - for equality. I feel that this is a wrong idea of equality. A poster above noted Hongkong and scarcity of space. As it happens, I have noted that private hotels/stores usually have larger/better spaces for women's washrooms. I recall a Ann Taylor's washroom at a mall in Delaware. As to trans washrooms? Strongly disagree. In Canada, we have two federal official languages. We have no federal official cultural. The federal state has no business in the washrooms of the nation.
