According to Google: The US is $28 trillion China is $19 trillion. China has a large population. What is per capita GDP? For a State, the per capita number is irrelevant. ==== The Chinese/people economy generate GDP - as does the US. It is a river. Like a hydro dam, the State can divert some of this water. In international disputes, how much of this river can the State divert?

Why do we need mass immigration again?
August1991 replied to I am Groot's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I know Newfoundland. I have been to Iceland. These places, islands - with so few people - have survived for centuries. ==== I suspect that you Americans and your Constitution only survive because you are States, islands. -
RFK Jr. considering endorsing Trump?
August1991 replied to CouchPotato's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
From what I understand, RFK Jnr will stop his efforts to be a candidate. He is stopping because of the Democratic Party. -
RFK Jr. considering endorsing Trump?
August1991 replied to CouchPotato's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Agreed. ===== I lived in the Soviet Union, behind the Iron Curtain, so I know how this works. The US Democrats/MSM are doing as the Soviets under Gorbachov did, even Putin now. There is an opposition - Trump - but he is wrong. No normal person would vote for him. -
Bump. I feel very strongly about this. In these 2020s, we have the chance to create a century of peace for ordinary people ==== Let us be as the Europeans in 1815, or 1945. Establish a structure of peace: counterweights.

Why do we need mass immigration again?

Realist, I entirely agree. I reckon that Mearscheimer mistakes the "State" with the person in power. -
Why do we need mass immigration again?

Disagree. For centuries, Iceland has been a successful, civilised society. No immigration. Newfoundland too. -
Why do we need mass immigration again?
August1991 replied to I am Groot's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Mass immigration? Iceland has some 300,000. Newfoundland? About 500,000. ====== Politcians {the State, according to Mearscheimer) want to tax. -
Why do we need mass immigration again?

By world standards, Iceland and Newfoundland are successful, rich societies. Ordinary people in both places live well now. For centuries, Icelanders and Newfoundlanders have lived, prospered. They are civilised. -
Why do we need mass immigration again?
August1991 replied to I am Groot's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I was not referring to Alberta - rather Iceland. Newfoundlanders and people on Iceland have survived for several centuries. In peace. We don't have to get big to survive. -
Entirely misses the point. ==== Herbie, women (females) require more space to pee.

On this, I tend to agree with Mearscheimer. NATO is an aggressive organisation. ===== In 1815, Europeans created a century of peace for ordinary people. In summer 1914, this peace collapsed. In the late 1940s, we established another peace. This peace/arrangement collapsed in the 1980s.

True, sadly. NATO (like SEATO) was designed to confront the Communists. Now, NATO - in the 2020s - is "involved more globally". Why does it bother me? AG, imagine a world where Trump or Harris decide everything.

Arm Movements: Trudeau Snr in 1968 & Trump in 2024
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Arts and Culture
Tom Cruise, Marlon Brando, George Clooney. It takes great self-importance to stand on a stage - narcissism helps. In the case of Trudeau Snr in June 1968, I have no doubt. Nor Trump in 2024. Mussolini? Dunno. -
Abroad recently, I explained that Montreal is now a rare city in the western world: unilingual people live together. I explained the term allophone, how Bruxelles is similar but different. The Brit asked about Norm Macdonald - from Montreal. No, I corrected. He was from Quebec City. And btw, his brother was a good, ascerbic writer for the CBC. Then I noted that Canadians know Leslie Nielsen, but for us, we also know his brother as the deputy PM. Whatever.

I have been looking for this quote, video. It exists. It was an interview in Russia, 2010s? Putin refers to a meeting with Chirac Putin asked Chirac, "Why are the Americans like this?" Then Putin explained that Chirac spoke in Russian and answered, не культурный. ==== The US Constitution is a remarkable document - and I admire how the writers added amendments at the start. But I must agree with Chirac. It is true about you Americans in this post-Soviet world.

As it happens, I favour a woman's right to end a pregnancy - even close to birh date. More important, I favour this recent US federal Supreme Court decision. America is great because it is federation of states. -
Montreal: Cars vs Bicycles -Huge Waste
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Local Politics in Canada
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Agassiz These glaciers receded some 15,000 years ago, At one point, there was a break in northern Ontario and the freshwater broke through, and the city of Montreal with its mountains was created. -
Montreal: Cars vs Bicycles -Huge Waste
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Local Politics in Canada
For better or worse, we in Canada (and Russia) have been blessed by the glaciers receding. In Ontario, these glaciers left us with calm lakes. In Quebec, they have many raging rivers. -
Montreal: Cars vs Bicycles -Huge Waste
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Which Costco? Bridge, no doubt ===== Montreal is a city of three mountains, the result of very recent glaciers. In addition, Montreal is in the north without a gulfstream. Unlike Amsterdam, Montreal is not a city for bicycles -
Montreal: People sleeping on the sidewalk

Money for a dog. spray paint, tattoo - you're not poor. The issue is not poverty. ====== Old guys don't spray graffiti. Young (rich, white) guys do. Why? -
Sarcasm. Why should women take less time? DUI_Offender, you mean the opposite of your post.
