CRA (Revenue Canada) -Can they collect money?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Herbie, I am not ignoring letters from the CRA. The CRA is not sending me letters In fact, I think that I owe them more, I want to pay them a tax. I am asking the federal CRA people to clarify the situation and answer me. ==== Local tax collectors know my situation. I pay with a debit card. -
CRA (Revenue Canada) -Can they collect money?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Like most federal States (Germany, Australia even Russia), an individual must face different tax regimes. In Montreal, I deal with a city tax regime, a school tax, a province tax system and a federal tax system. Each level has its own way of doing things. (BTW, this is true in Russia and Canada and the US. Our Canadian CPP/RRQ system works. Putin made the Russian system work better.) Anyway.... The federal CRA people are clueless. -

Maybe that's the lesson of the federal CRA people. -
Is the Canada Health Act already dead?
August1991 replied to admined's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
On this forum, we have had many discussions about health care. IMHO, it is impossible to discuss health care on a public forum because it becomes ultimately a discussion about death - an existential discussion. Women are a large user of health services in part because of child birth. A few people require health care throughout life and women typically care for these people. Whether men or women, the greatest health care costs occur at the end of life. By some estimates, 90% of our health insurance is spent in the last three weeks of life. ==== I prefer RomneyCare but I oppose ObamaCare. I oppose the Canada Health Act. Each province should decide its own health insurance policy/system. In fact, at present, this is what Canadian provincial governments are increasingly doing. -
Is the Canada Health Act already dead?
August1991 replied to admined's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The OP provides a link to an article about Loblaws and Weston. In Quebec, there are many private health service providers. For routine health care, it is common to ask whether it was done "private or public"? -
Harris destroyed Trump in debate
August1991 replied to Matthew's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Harris did not destroy Trump. I disagree. Harris said nothing stupid. In 1984, John Turner famously said "I had no choice. My hands were tied... " in 1988, Dukakis said ""No, I don't, Bernard, and I think you know that I've opposed the death penalty during all of my life." ===== We live in different times. -

I disagree. I thought the questions were reasonable. -
Tariffs are a Tax on Americans
August1991 replied to Rebound's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
If you are a world producer of something (monopoly) - or you are world buyer of something (monopsony) - you can manipulate the world price in your favour. -
Agreed. But the US Constitution has Amendments. (Unlike the Bible or the Koran, the writers of the US Constitution knew that it would have to change. evolve - to survive.) The writers specifically added several to show how it could be done. (They were indicating how to have sex so the DNA of kids could be different.) As a Canadian, my favourite is the 10th Amendment. It makes explicit that power is control. And a "right" restricts the power of the State. Our Charter of Rights is a pale imitation but is similar. ==== A "right" is a protection against the State. The State should not discriminate on eye colour The State should not enforce "civil rights". If I choose to discriminate on religion, it is my choice.

Tariffs are a Tax on Americans

Quebec is the Saudi Arabia of maple syrup production. And America is the largest buyer of maple syrup - as well as much else. -
10 Sep 2024 Debate: Thoughts After
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
America, For better or worse, the 1960 Kennedy Nixon debates seem a distant past. Your debates now are local politics. Your presidents no longer have a claim to lead the Free World. -
10 Sep 2024 Debate: Thoughts After
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Herbie, agreed. Trump had ample opportunity to make her say something stupid. -
Stalin invaded. Truman opposed. Mao got involved. Stalin died. We all agreed to disagree.

In Quebec, we have a tariff on maple syrup. Do you Americans understand what Trump is doing? -
Unlike Mearsheimer, I am very optimistic. ===== We have survived a Cold War - potential disaster. We've even survived a so-called uni-polar world. Now, we're in a New World - like post 1648.

What makes you proud to be Canadian...

AG, I agree. People in English-Canada view Americans as we in French-Canada view Canadians. -

Agreed. In this debate, the guy cannot win. But the woman can lose. -
You ask the critical question. ===== No skin in the game? No vote.

Who will win the Presidential Debate?
August1991 replied to NAME REMOVED's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Nothing Trump says will lose. IOW, Trump cannot lose this debate. But Harris can lose. She may say something stupid - a horrendous word salad. ===== I think Harris will avoid stupidity/word salad. -
Vote Divide -Men vs Women
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Hitler? ==== Agreed. Trump is not a lawyer. Harris is not a "family lawyer".
