The Bloc was originally a party made of Quebec nationalists who defected from the federal Progressive Conservative Party and Liberal Party. BQ founder Lucien Bouchard was a cabinet minister in the federal Progressive Conservative government of Brian Mulroney. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloc_Qu%C3%A9b%C3%A9cois

Don't forget...this isn't "people". It is the government representative and responsible for the social welfare of 8 million people negotiating with the federal government that is further responsible for the welfare and unity of the country. It isn't as simple as a loan's officer saying "no". As for Bombardier, they are still somewhat mismanaged and very politically coddled.

Voter intelligence is being insulted again

You guys really need to stop thinking that you've been out to the country cause you went to a petting zoo!!! And you also should be more wary of who you call "rural" and categorically label as uneducated. I know of a few doctors, radiologists to be precise, who have 14 years of education and make 10 times what you would ever dream of making in a year and would be considered "rural" and are the farthest things from uneducated. So where does your "fact" come from? Perhaps you should said something more specific like FARMERS are uneducated....but even that isn't true anymore. Many farm kids that take over daddy's farm are going to get business or agriculture degrees now. So really, where does that fact come from? The douchebag in the front of a lecture hall that teaches you what to think instead of how to think? -
Rest assured, I do not require any lecture on the necessities and merits of taxation in the modern world. But the money Quebec receives is NOT to be spent as seen fit, it is meant to provide basic services. Since we are also on the topic, check these...while is paints Quebec in not nearly a bad of light as a couple other provinces, it does show the problems equalization creates: http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2011/02/17/kevin-libin-how-equalization-is-a-formula-for-stagnation/ http://news.nationalpost.com/photo_gallery/graphic-the-inequality-of-equualization-payments/

ROFL...awesome

Ok, you are missing the point completely...and I don't mean to be in ass at all when pointing out your citizenship. I in fact think that is awesome you have an interest and knowledge in Canada; would avoid what happened on my honeymoon. Quick story: Was at Opryland (wife is a huge country music fan so perfect for our honeymoon ) and sitting at the bar I ordered a Crown and Coke and my wife a beer and clamato juice which will wonders never cease they had! Anyhow the bartender immediately asked where we were from and we said near Edmonton, Alberta. This woman who seemed very nice and wanted to make conversation proceeded to say "I went to Niagra Falls once, is that anywhere near where you live?" I instinctively looked like this: Anyhow, imagine this scenario: You have a sibling who is bad with money...I mean real bad. You told them that you would help them out cause you want to make sure your niece and nephew are taken care of. Admirable traits when it comes to "family". Next thing you know you are shelling out more money for the bare necessities because your sibling is spending all this money you are giving them on things like iPods, Xbox and Nintendo DS. And since you can't let them starve, you give them more money. You can't tell them how to run their house otherwise they threaten to disown you and have nothing to do with you. So you suck it up....to keep peace. You pay up and shut up and they do what they want. While in the meantime, you wouldn't provide this for your family because it is impractical; you want to save up for rainy days or hard times yourself. But you can't. This is unsettling too because you never know what might happen...hard times could come along and you were unprepared because all your money went into supporting their frivilousness and they can't cut back what they have given their family because they are spoiled and will bitch and whine until they get it some way some how. Now you are both broke because of their stupidity and your "obligation"...and they continue to pull you deeper into the abyss with them. And then you tell me...a White-Anglosaxon-Heterosexual-Male-Protestant to go to Quebec and attempt to change it from the inside? Pardon my French, but are you fucking nuts?!
-
And without citizenship or paying Canadian taxes, so is your opinion. Thanks for coming out to play though.
-
Hmmmmm....so let me get this straight. As a fiscal conservative, instead of complaining about another province providing things ad nauseum to their people that they ultimately can't afford even without billions of dollars of handouts every year from other provinces...I should ask for them too because that is what democracy is about?! Like I said though....I'll cut you some slack cause how would you understand (or care to). It ain't your money!
-
Sounds to me like you just don't know what you are talking about in thinking Quebec is better run province with a $163 billion debt vs $828 million?! http://www.budget.finances.gouv.qc.ca/Budget/2011-2012/en/documents/BudgetPlan.pdf http://www.finance.alberta.ca/business/debt/index.html I will cut you some slack. It must be hard being an armchair Canadian from Indiana. And before you throw the "oil money" argument out there, tell you what, ask ANYONE what got Alberta debt free through the 90's when oil was at $18 a barrel.
-
Actually, I would say it depends on how you look at it. By and large Albertans make more...so by and large they are in a different tax bracket: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/fq/txrts-eng.html Thing that pisses me off is I am in the 26% tax bracket and have to subsidize someone elses caviar lifestyle (best health care in the country, $7/day daycare etc...) while they should only be eating chopped liver because that is all they are willing to work for (and can barely aford that!) yet think they are entitled to more because "vee are a deestinkt nayseeon" I work for filet mignon and am told I have to have a McDonald's so we can all eat the same...screw that! I work hard for what I want and I budget for what I can't immediately afford! And taking a look at the aggregated provincial tax rates, Alberta does NOT have the lowest tax rates unless you are making such stupid amounts of money you shouldn't be worrying about taxes...but they are still pretty low

Daniel, attributing words to someone that aren't theirs? You're kidding right? This pathetic display makes me feel even better yet about my decision to vote Conservative.
-
Thank you for your insight as to who I "think" I am voting for. I will remember it (and you) as I mark my X beside the name of my Conservative candidate. And again thank you...gives me something to look forward to.

Will the Harper Government Survive This Week?

Is that the best you can do? You don't agree so you say "go away"... What a childish attitude. -

It is in every way superior to the Westminster parliamentary model. -

I agree....a plethora of voices is good. But when they are all screaming their own agenda, all you do is split votes and end up with 3 elections in 7 years because their is a hissy fit in the sandbox when one of those voices doesn't get what they want. That is why yes, I do favour the American system. The parties pick their candidates and they whittle it down to one...and then the people choose their leader. The only way that happens in this country is if you buy a party membership and choose the party leader...and then vote for that parties representative in your riding. It is also rather shameful to have to vote for a complete tool of an MP because you want a certain person to be PM. -

It might just be that playground tactics decided government despite the democratic process. That in itself is a shameful and disappointing fact. Should the conservatives win and a coalition emerge immediately after the election, it is a clear that the opposition parties have a direct contempt for the will of the people and rightly so the people should be pissed cause that sorta bullshit coulda been done without a f***ing election. The last 6 years (and December 2008 in particular) is a prime example of why there should only be two parties allowed to run and "recall legislation" be introduced. One party on the right and one on the left. In the end they get branded as that anyway. Hell...they were ready to unite that way anyway so what's the big deal? At least then we could end the bullshit of a minority government and actually get something done...and if they don't, then the people have a vehicle in which to hold them accountable and get their asses out. Like I said previously, I could give a damn who wins the election. But I want a clear cut winner and non of these playground antics of meeting after school on the playground to see who gets to run the school. I want a decisive victor selected BY THE PEOPLE. -

Wow...I am so glad we have benefit of having the "tolerant" left in this country. I say something based on what I previously witnessed and I am being told I am "threatening"....being told I "don't belong in Canada" and being told to "grow up"...and then to be called a nutzo?! Wow...if I was a a murderer or a baby diddler I would get better treatment than being from Alberta in this country by the left wingers. -

BornAlbertan replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Uhm...based on what I said, use your imagination I am not talking about what the parties would be doing, I am talking about the people. But in hindsight, I shouldn't have separated the public reaction from the the crisis I menioned....as it really was the crisis if you will. Being in Ontario, unless you were here you could not begin to fathom the anger and talk of separation. -

If that were to happen the parties involved would be dealing with major fallout. Remember what happened the last time they were seriously contemplating that? To hell with the proroguement...I am talking about the "constitutional crisis" it would cause and let's not forget the public outcry. I never saw such a resentful sentiment for Western separation like I did when that was going on. It wasn't just conservatives either...and I won't deny the fact I was more than pissed myself. -

At this point, despite being a conservative, I could give a damn who gets in so long as it is a majority. At least then we could have a government that can: 1. Complete a mandate 2. Do what they say they're going to do (provided they are honest enough to do it...which I gotta say, despite what some say about Harper, at least he stuck to his word on the GST...unlike those before him). 3. No constant bitching in parliament about nothing...and getting exactly that accomplished. Either way, we get screwed in this country with high taxes, failing infrastructure and over-praised healthcare. I would at least like something to show for it without going to the voting booth every 2 years. -

HAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA What a tool.... QC would weather the economic storm better without Ottawa, says Marois http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianp...fiOKMUVEMVjBCsg More true woould be: Canada would weather the economic storm better without Quebec. Typical Quebec separatist mentality...I wonder where they would expect to get an additional 14+ billion if there were no transfer payments? And responde quickly to the pressing needs of their industries?!?! They can't even support the socialist lifestyles they have established without holding their hands out to the rest of the country for more money....how the hell would they be able to responde to their "industries" and still be so socialist?
