  1. Argus didn't make up the name. That doesn't mean that Argus hasn't resorted to name calling and slurring or that it is out of his scope to be entertained by feeding the fire. Just because Argus does resort to name calling when frustrated or when having a weak argument only reflects on him personally. But Dion is going to get a name, and Argus quoting a name tossed out there isn't that bad. You are Challenging the intent of Argus posts because of his reputation. But had some else mentioned the same quote, I am not certain it would draw as much of your ire. I don't think Flipper will stick, but I don't know how it sounds in French Either.
  2. Well, I had to ask some minimum wage people their opinion of abolishing the minimum wage. Seems to be a disconnect between those whom believe in free markets and invisible hands, and those whom work at minimum wage.
  3. I am not certain that it does or doesn't. Are there Polygamy and Incest laws? Are the two people gay twin brothers? While all this is speculative, I don't think that Riff Raff and Magenta will be able to test this law, as they are from another planet. Which is about as much as I care to comment about this topic. I don't know of any incestous couples living together. (Fortuneately)
  4. Ignatieff has come off insensitive a number of times.
  5. That depends on the business. Yes some businesses will make a huge profit by closing. I know of many business people whom do quite well closing businesses, reopening under another name, and doing it all over again. The business is trashed, but they personally are laughing all the way to the bank. Other people, may not be as entreprenuerial. . That is correct. And you are going to have government for the rest of your life. You better believe it. You may not have seen it. But don't think that the person taking no wage isn't receiving any benefit from such a noble gesture. It is prevalent in small business, particularly when starting up. Who's talking nonsense now.
  6. Whos talking about $15? Perhaps you should read the rest of my post. I was posting in response to Saturn who seemed to think that the minimum wage legislation was harmless - I explained how it could indeed be quite harmful, and gave an example. So are you suggesting to abolish it or not?
  7. Well, that's why your here. To round things out a bit. The link doesn't work for me
  8. My concerns with the Loyalty of the Afghan army are real. My concerns have been verified as TRUE.Army Guy You can't do any better than this? You have provided no Argument for your position. And if this is the best you can do, you are completely unarmed. You wanna quote my Afghan quotes, and discuss it in the Afghan thread. I am ready.
  9. There were casualties in the spring months, I have no idea that support went up, if so that is perhaps because of some speeches by the Prime Minister. However as these casualties increased throughout the year and particularly the months of August and September support for the mission plummetted.
  10. There are so many polls, coming out I am getting confused. Is the online poll the one that has the Conservatives near 40% and the Greens at 8%?
  11. What do you want to believe in Afghanistan? The mission, or the aid, or the governments move towards Islamic Fundamentalism? Sorry, I don't need to "believe" in anything. We need to know what we are doing over there, and how can that be accomplished. It is 6 years later, and there hasn't been any significant progress, and now that the Karzai government has little to show for its duration and there is a movement both internally towards greater fundamentalism, more freedom for warlords, and then externally, people are once again providing shelter for a resurgent Taliban. Afghan soldiers aren't trustworthy and neither back the government or our troops. Pakistan and the US helped create Islamic Fundamentalism in Afghanistan, and the US has to use its leverage to have Pakistan take a more active role in uprooting the insurgents vs providing them aid, food, and weapons to kill Canadians with. This is as messy as it gets, and Afghanistan isn't the simplistic good vs evil. What I do believe, is that the 200 million the government just added to the 100million for this year, is a step in the right direction. And I believe that Canada is the good guys. After that, it is clear as mud.
  12. Baylee has been banned. However, there are many people whom have posted in the various Afghan threads, whom claim this is not a war. You want to tell that to a Pashtun? The Afghan Army and the Canadian Forces had a tense standoff after one incident. When the US Bombed our troops, I wouldn't expect anyone to write the incident off and state "get over it". They are to be investigated and procedures checked. If the procedures are ineffective they need to be changed. If the Procedures haven't been followed, that person, is held accountable. Unfortuneately for the combat soldier on patrol, he is going to be judged over a split second decision that could have negative repurcussions if he is incorrect.
  13. Only the NDP and the Green Party support this. And the Greens don't have any seats.
  14. The Pollsters aren't saying that. They are saying the Liberals could well lose seats to the CPC do to green Support. The Conservatives felt that STing in London where the Greens handed it the High Profile Conservative Candidate and 2 time Popular Mayor whom won a term without campaigning. Don't be so smug about the whom the Greens may sting. Yeah, maybe they could try this. Conservative, Progressive Conservative, Reform, Canadian Alliance Conservative. Seemed to work pretty Good. Or this one Progressive Conservative Sasketchewan Party I believe the CCF was going to be Called the "NEW" party. Not much of a name really. But then, following your logic, and dropping the word NEW after 40 years, it would probably be more popular. PARTY. Which party are you with ???? The PARTY party.
  15. I believe the NDP supporters did that for about 13 years to STOP the horrific Manning, Day, Harper, Monsters the Liberals Portrayed them as. And none of their agendas where pushed. Infact just the opposite. Agendas of the stronger oppositions were put forward. Those of the BQ and the Reform. All the "left" wing Liberal promises were just that, "promises" that were never fullfilled during numerous consecutive majorities. What is interesting is that the NDP vote went something like 23% to the Reform and 57% to the Liberals leaving them (NDP) with bugger all throughout the 90s. It would appear that the Greens have taken as many Conservative Environmentalists, as possible, and that some are drifting back to the CPC now that Harper is tackling their issues vs ignoring the science completely. The Liberal Voter is flocking to the Greens because the Conservative adds have made it clear the Liberals did nothing with the environment, and timing is everything. The Greens were working on stealing the conservative vote, and did just that in London as well as the Liberal and NDP vote. We don't have a two party system. It doesn't last in Canada. If we did the West wind would just blow in another one, They are good at it. Progressive, Social Credit, CCF, Reform, Etc.
  16. It is not possible. What you seem to overlook is that in Ontarios History the NDP were official opposition at times as well as having been part of a Coalition Government. The Federal NDP have never ever broken beyond Ed Broadbents 40something seats. There may have been one Alberta Federal NDP and One Quebec NDP during this reign. There is nothing but an NDP vacuum in Quebec, and same for Alberta. This will not change, probably not in my lifetime anyways, (I have no crystal ball), so the math just isn't there for an NDP government formed on 36% of the popular vote.
  17. No it is not comprehensive or accurate except in crudest of terms. I played around with this a bit, and was amused but all in all it's useless.
  18. So what choice are you offering?
  19. Did you need to start another thread? I think you have confused the issues. The Taliban have surged in the past year. Largely because of the failure to deliver the goods to Afghanistan 6 years after the overthrow of the Taliban. OBL is in the region, largely on the failure of the US to remain focused on Al Qaida. Instead they became diverted because their President was both opportunist and an ideologist. Iran has little to do with Afghanistan. About the best thing the US could have done was let Iran go after the Taliban in 1998 when they were at the brink of war. Iran backed factions in the Northern Alliance. Iran can do little against Sunni Muslims in Afghanistan, or Pakistan. They have little in common with Pashtuns. Iran was co-operative after 9/11 like Syria, because the enemy, Al Qaida, were a threat to them, and seen as an internal threat the Syria, and a Religious rival of Iran. A CIA operative is a person whom is paid by the CIA to do things you wouldn't normally do. They are also people whom feed information into the system, both accurate and not. Their isn't a complete military solution to Afghanistan. There never was, after the route of the Taliban. The aid should have been rolling in while the Taliban and Al Qaida were Disorganized and Dispersed. Now, the military is stuck in a never ending counter insurgency war, where the enemy can reside in safety within the Pakistan Border. But really, another thread???? This could have went into "AFGHANISTAN The LATEST" thread.
  20. Whos talking about $15? This thread is about Abolishing the minimum wage. There are ways to do it. Some of them are very bad. Some of them may be more effective, but have not been tried by any Province.
  21. Not going to argue basic economics . Again there is logic to your argument. However, unless the increase is excessive or unjustified which could create even more problems then you suggest, I don't believe the minimum wage suggested federally by the NDP is going to create the situation you describe. No disputing some of the economists thinking here, I think I see left, centre and right, when I read their postings. If we are going to try the Ireland model, I think Newfoundland would make a good testing ground. Until then, we have a minimum wage.
  22. It is very unlikely that an increase in the minimum wage will spark inflation. It is more likely as other suggest that certain small businesses may cut back on employment. You are correct in suggesting the market would adjust. 90 years of history has proven just that fact. Since the minimum wage is playing catchup to the requirements to work for a living wage, it is understandable that the level it is set at will always been seen as floor. The statement that poor people are spending to much money is limited by the fact that poor people can't spend anymore money then they have. Minimum wage people aren't the ones mortgaged to the hilt, and with 2 new lease vehicles and living day to day eating and paying off the interest on these items. Minimum wage people are spending their earnings on food, rent and a bus ticket and probably trying to save any extra nickels for education. With regards to your statements of inflation, inflation is always present, but hasn't been a major detrimental factor since the oil crises of the 70s and early 80s. Rapidly rising Energy, Hydro, Gas, Oil etc are major factors affecting inflation. Something far more deadly could occur with the removal of the minimum wage and a decrease in spending as you suggest. Deflation. Something not seen since the dirty thirties.
