Paul Martin Named Man of the Year
madmax replied to Progressive Tory's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Whereas Harper called an election to hide a deficit. Has no surplus to speak of, continued with the same abusive policies of Paul Martin that you claim are not "liberal". Sounds like a good finance minister for the CPC. They have broke the bank. They aren't hiding surpluses, they can't figure out how they blew all the money with nothing to show for it. Paul Martin is not my "Man of the Year". That is Toronto Star Bias. But this current government is fiscally incompetent. -

I thought Public Sector Workers could not participate in Political activities? No signs on lawns, no protesting regarding government etc.? -

They would be governing for no less then 18 months and no more then 2 years. Then the CPC may have an opportunity for Majority or the LPC an opportunity for Majority. -

That is correct.... Many more Union Members support Tories then the NDP. -

3 Months ago, Harper went against the weakest most pathetic leader the LPC had ever produced, and couldn't even grab a Majority against a flake. I doubt there were many who believed or felt that Dion was the 2nd coming of anything. His performance and platform were pathetic and delusional. The fact that Harper choose and early fight, and came up with a Pyrric victory is his own problem. -

It may be fatal to the LPC or the NDP but not to Confederation. Why do you fear the reality of an elected government that can continue to govern without having to go to another unnecessary election, when the will of the majority of parliment can be attained. The CPC have the same options. To govern with the support of the majority of parliment. That is a no brainer. Coalitions and Accords are a safe way to govern. They are superior to fly by the seat of your pants minority governments in jeapardy of sneezing the wrong way for fear of being defeated. They have clear guidelines and cannot be held ransom like some minority parliments. Nice try with the fear factor..... it is wearing off in my region as people realize that the Harper CPC government are enjoying their winter vacations in sunny warm places without a care about us. -

I doubt Mulroney could win an Seat Anywhere in Ontario. Something Rae accomplished by simply running as a Liberal in a Liberal stronghold. But it ends there. -

You have things confused. The forestry has received a great gift from the Harper Government. Tell them that. The BC forestry workers have received the same gift as forestry workers across Canada. Northern Ontario is reaping the harvest of the Harper Forestry Policy. The fact that the Harper Government is rather ignorant and incompetent is expected by anyone following industrial policy over the last 20 years. Their hasn't been one, other then move to a post industrial society. The bailout is not for the "workers" in case you missed it. It is for the companies, North American Auto Companies, so that they can have a harmonious closure of Canadian/Ontario Operations. The elimination of North American production has been in full swing since 2005, and part of the problems are that the companies are heavily invested in building New operations in Mexico and CHina, and with the financial meltdown in the US, the available capital to continue to downsize and relocate disappeared, concurrently with a recession in where Auto Sales of "ALL" manufacturers have been hit hard as happens in every boom and bust cycle. The workers may or may not know this, but this "bailout" which are secured loans are not for the workers but for the companies to help eliminate their jobs permanently. The Harper Government like the Ontario Government is going to play a role to continue this process. Giving money to banks was not to save the jobs of the banking employees either.. If BC forestry workers have a problem, they can Dial up "Dictator Steve" and ask him to fix it. -

When tired and out of ideas, the Sponsorship Scandal is tossed out there to detract. It actually undermines the activities of the scandal, and is best served when needed. Not used on fruitless replies. -

Harper tried to cut a deal with the BQ and the NDP to govern in replace of Paul Martin, shortly before the Martin Governments first throne speech. The BQ were on board, and the NDP backed out at the last minute. -

Nafta has no teeth as the US proved with the softwood lumber dispute. They just shit all over and ignored the Nafta rulings.

Why are our casualties so high in Afghanistan?
madmax replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The question is about 7 years past its best before date. But at least your asking it. This topic has been covered in many of the Afghanistan threads on Maple Leaf Web. Also many links have been provided as to why Canadians Soldiers are experiencing such high Casualty rates. I just don't know how someone with your time and interest on Maple Leaf Web could have missed these discussions. But don't worry, it is still higher then the attention given to our soldiers and the mission by our elected officials. -

Yes there are alot of factors that affect the dollar. THere is a political aspect to the rise and fall, but it is just one variable. The rise and fall of the dollar becomes a political hot potato if the standard is changed or if it no longer floats but is fixed. I am not aware of all the countries with a fixed currency other then China.

Prime Minister Harper 18 New Senators.... Thinking of Senators First. I like this....
-
The Prime Minister already has another term. The question about if an election were called is more about the Minority/Majority that Mr. harper is looking for. Thus there is public support for his actions, and this is reflected not only in this poll but also official polls. The trick is how do you keep this electoral support, when the public doesn't want an election. The Prime Minister has stated he wants to govern to fall of 09 and have another election. 2009 will be interesting....

That's very interesting. Where can this information be found. Was it a formal source, a business source, news source etc. If not eliminate the GST entirely, they could do it on various goods or services? You are right about putting the GST back after a year. People didn't like it in the first place when the Conservatives brought it in. And now, I doubt a Conservative or Liberal would dare raise it. We existed without the GST on services prior to free trade, but as government knew the intent was to eliminate manufacturing and move into a "service sector economy" they cleverly put taxes on services.
