  1. 1000 Comedians out of work.... and your telling Ontario Jokes. Don't quite your day job.I was on a well until this year. Now I am on safe city water........ I just gathered a handful of snow and put it in a glass.. yummy.
  2. How many times did you vote NDP???
  3. As Ontario has been shedding 200,000 Industrial jobs each year, and this month has lost 71,000 jobs. That is a rude awakening for any PRovince and a trend that would be devastating should these numbers continue at this rate, let alone go higher. People said in 06, well its only 30,000 jobs this month, and 07 well its only 35,000 jobs and in 08 they said, oh it should only be 40,000 jobs except its 120,000 jobs lost. The Economists were only wrong by 300%. I wouldn't say the sky is falling. I would say the roof has too much snow on it, and we either get shovelling or watch it collapse.
  4. Thanks for calling me on this guyser. I am surprised that I didn't get 5 million FU your F)#@$*)(#ING wrong you idiot replies. Even though I used a government source for my reply, and that was in another thread, which I cited, I was merely bringing that same stat and fact over to this thread. Sure enough, I see your numbers, do another glorious google, and your stats are backed up about 12 to 1 against mine, and probably a hell of alot higher. READ READ READ first before you look at the stat and spout. I have to give way to Satan once more. It wasn't even the fine print, it was just my rush to judgement. One thing that does stand out in all Provinces is the size of Unionization within the Public Sector. In the meantime, you choose how many lashes and I will get the noodle wet. My apologies to those who are taking me at my word, we all make mistakes. None of this unfortuneately changes the economic circumstances around me. But its good to get the facts right or go with the majority report.
  5. Toyota surronds me in 3 Cities... I know what you mean.
  6. This NEW Senator... Patrick Brazeau, 34, had said he wanted to stay on as head of the ... resigned from the organization and have now been hired as aides by Senator Patrick Brazeau ... where there was Scotch on hand and a small fridge stocked with beer. ... Stan Koebel and Frank Koebel must have missed the short list for the Senate. They liked to have beer in their fridges too.
  7. It is a normal assumption for people to make. If 40,000 people are laid off in one month, and you hear that 1,200 to 1,700 of them work for the CAW in the big three, people don't know about the other 38,000s background, because the CAW has grabbed the medias attention. The government does not keep stats on the unemployment rates of Unionized and Non Unionized employees. The government keeps stats on the Unionization rates of those who are employed. It does break up public and private sector as well. I know many times people will hear of an announced plant closure and automatically assume that they plant is unionized. In many cases they are not. In Ontario that is. There other thing is the competition for minds in Auto. People are correct to compare the UNIONIZATION of the big three vs the Japanese. However, get passed much of the assembly and the primary production is shared between all companies from many of the same Tier 1,2, and 3 suppliers. However, that doesn't mean that a significant number of suppliers are unionized in North America. The quality of the unionized plants has historically been higher. Many of GMs parts do not come from unionized sources, but from companies that are obligated to meet the same quality standards. Sometimes the fines alone are enough to close down an operation, but then it is too late. Regardless it is something that all manufacturers face. For me, even though I am well informed of all the non auto related closures, it is auto that the public, media and pundits like to identify as Ontarios manufacturing sector. To them, the other 110,000 jobs in January don't count.
  8. Funny you are making it up or speculating. Unionization rates in Ontario in the private sector, are nothing like in Alberta where the rate of unionization is 30% plus. Just because the Unions are making noise about the job losses, doesn't mean they are suffering more. Infact, they are bleeding less then the Non Union job losses. The reason that they scream loudly is because with each layoff or closure is a loss of dues paying members. So they need to shout. Of the latest announcements in my riding... 5 major retail stores closed, NONE were unionized. Of the 11 Plant closures announced since last September, 1 is unionized 85 people, the operation recorded a profit and the decision to close was made over 2 years ago and the CHinese plant was completed 8 months ago. Another plant declared Bankruptcy, it was non Unionized with 85 Workers as well. Another operation producing windows for homes closed with 36 people, bankruptcy, non unionized. 2 Auto related operations have announced their closure at the end of the month. They are also non unionized, both are profitable and are recent American Purchases, with the decision to consolidate operations. 1 gardening products manufacturer will be downsizing in 3 stages. Eliminating 1000 jobs, phase one comes in April. THis operation was purchased by an American Firm In March of 09. I am just going through this list.... and there is only one of 11 unionized. I haven't even got into the downsizing layoffs of operations trying to survive. Oh, And I keep forgeting, sorry, 12 plants another with 800 workers has closed laying off all personel (It may reopen ....) also not unionized. Of the near 1800 layoffs, 85 are unionized, and I believe not included in this figure are the 300 non unionized people who lost their retail jobs. That is just under the 6% unionization rate around us. After you lose your job, it doesn't matter if you are unionized or not, you are unemployed. Many of the non unionized layoffs have no pensions, benefits or big wages, so there EI isn't all that great either. Jobs, thousands of jobs paying less then $12/hour are being lost for good. Now, how loud do people yell when they lose their $12 or less job??? People who make more money yell the loudest.... Most of these operations have Temporary Agencies suppling the labour force on a permanent basis. These agencies have replaced Unions in the factories. Last year, quite a number of New Operations, less then 7 years old, closed down, none were unionized. If unorganized labour could voice what is happening to them.... well, they wouldn't be unorganized. There are still many jewels around me. Profitable operations, and so far, not affected by boardroom decisions made in another country. Its the combination of Bankruptcies and profitable plants closings that is creating alot of extra grief in communities.
  9. I think it means I finally beat you to a scoop Honestly I don't know. And we may never know because the Liberals will not be allowed to discuss the matter. I can speculate.... and it is worth nothing....... that the CPC were not going to get any political capital from continuing the suit and most of the public will not care what happens from here on in. For the LPC, perhaps they can secretly have a PARTY, behind closed doors, open up the beer vaults and alcohol, invite the NEW CPC Senator and his new staff over for a drink and let bygones be bygones. I call this a minor LPC victory and a tactical withdrawl for the CPC.
  10. The stats for January are 30% shy based upon those who do not qualify for EI but find themselves unemployed. But that figure remains roughly the same from month to month, along with the other factors you imply. Thus those figures are and always have been a ballpark figure, but they indicate the direction the economy is headed, and thus people are able to judge the hardship in their region knowing what 40,000 lost jobs felt like vs 72,000 lost jobs. The higher the figure the more we know we are in shit.I believe Hamilton just posted a 25% increase in welfare applications in one month. In the mean time, many of the LARGE announced closures haven't even begun yet. This is the prelude to the job loss.
  11. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has dropped a $3.5-million defamation suit against the Liberal party over the Cadman affair. A terse news release says Mr. Harper and the Federal Liberal Agency of Canada have agreed to settle all issues related to the suit. The action has been dismissed without costs awarded to either side and both parties have agreed not to comment further. SHHSHHH
  12. 5 people were interested in the running for the NDP nomination. Again, that isn't "kicked out" but obviously the 2 or 3 term MP couldn't find the support to win a nomination battle, sometimes is an indicator that they won't have the support to win another election. But that is not always the case. Clearly that 5 person nomination battle didn't result in a victory for the NDP, and they might have held the seat if Desjarlais had shown up with enough support to win the nomination. Desjarlais was a sitting NDP MP until she choose to resign from the party and sit as an independent until the next federal election. Obviously the she felt this was the best choice for her under the circumstances, rather then continue as an NDP MP until the next election. What this diversion from the Federal Deficit has done is show me a riding I didn't follow. To discover that NDP ridings in Manitoba are like LPC and CPC ridings in Ontario where many nomination battles are contested, sometimes with as many as 8 candidates if the parties haven't secured the nomination in advance. I also was unaware that Tina Keeper was an actress on North of 60 ..... until now.
  13. This shouldn't come as a shock or surprise to anyone who has been following the labour market trend of the last 2 to 3 years. Only daft, arrogant and ignorant politicians buried their heads in the sand saying all sorts of Bullshit, and denying that there was any significant problem. The Ontario Liberal government choose to mask the problem by highlighting their training and education funding. I expect the Federal Conservatives to use the same cover to hide structural changes that are here to stay. By taking virtually no action both the federal and provincial governments have allowed a catastrophy to happen with no preparation. And when I hear some of the statements like "Well, who could have predicted this, or its not our fault its worldwide", what they don't seem to realize is that Canadas strong foundation was removed during their watch. This didn't "JUST" happen. We are now witnessing the problem in a tidalwave fashion, that is spreading across all sectors. Don't hold your breath for anything. I have met many of these goof politicians, and short of slogans, buzz words and polls, these politicians are behind the curve and haven't the skillset to deal with the situation at hand. 5 major retail stores closed in my area or announced closing for the month of February. If you were in these stores, and saw the crowds before and after Christmas, and full parking lots, the closures come as a surprise to both shoppers and employees. Job growth has been in part time jobs at minimum wage or a little above. This has masked the job losses of people who were earning $14 to $21 full time in profitable companies that closed down their Canadian Operations. Now many of those PT jobs are drying up faster then they are created. Obviously if you have 3 consecutive years of 240,000 people losing these kinds of jobs, and the majority of those employees working for 50% less per hour and possibly 10 to 20 hours less per week at one job, then their purchasing power declines. Big Ticket items are the first to go. The run on, continues in both suppliers, retailers, importers and Stocks. People like to point to the US for our problems. The US had its own set of problems, different then ours. Sub Prime, financial scams and the like. It is a good thing that our problems not Sub Prime and the like, but we have to address our own economy, while the US digs itself out. That's my short rant for today
  14. The Province of Alberta has a Hotel Tax.
  15. LOL, why does every guy choose the RedGreen (The SHOW) solution to every problem.
  16. If you are referring to the 6 NFLD MPs I agree.
  17. The visual of Dion around a womans ankles.... I can see the cartoonist now. :)
  18. Well, now you made me look at the riding. The NDP picked this seat back up with Layton as leader. The LPC incumbent lost around 5000 votes and the riding.
  19. Like I said, I am not aware of any ridings were the NDP holds the nomination for the incumbent. I do know that I have read this about the other parties. You have to remember the NDP doesn't get alot of press on much of anything in Ontario. There are pros and cons to each way. Open nomination battles against an incumbent are democratic. However, guys like Chuck Cadman can find themselves losing a nomination battle against someone with the ability to sign up alot of memberships and swamp a nomination meeting.
  20. You have to start lying sometime. Now as a 20 year MP and independent is the time to lie..... Casey gets the last laugh. He stood his ground then won as an independent. An independent has the most of the electoral rules rigged against them. I would not be surprised that having been a Conservative MP for 20 year that much of the money that rolled into the CPC riding association coffers were because of him. I think it was the right thing for Casey to do, give the money to the CPC riding association so they could blow the money on a parachuted candidate and lose big time. Could there be hard feelings. Most likely.
  21. An NDP MP who remained and NDP MP until losing a nomination battle. Neither kicked out by Layton, but required like any challenged incumbent to win their nomination battles, and no different the nominated candidates they have to win the election. IIRC a Liberal won the election, defeating both the NDP candidate and the independant. It may suck as an incumbent to lose a nomination battle, but any incumbent knows that if someone has handed in their papers, they best find all their supporters and sign them up. Although some parties do secure some MPs nominations, I don't believe the NDP does this. I do know that Sheila Copps was run out of town for simply running a losing campaign against Paul Martin. However, the truth is, she lost a nomination battle with .... erm, an Italian guy cabinet minister, who then lost his seat to an NDP candidate. It's politics....
  22. Dejarlais wasn't kicked out of the party by Jack Layton. A slap on the wrist is not the same as being kicked out of the party. Contested nominations occur in many ridings often where a party has strength there are people who choose to run against an Incumbent. Do parties secure the nominations of incumbent MPs? I don't believe the NDP does, perhaps the LPC and CPC secure nominations. Nominations like Iggy.
