Will Ruby Dhalla Survive this Political Scandal?
madmax replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
you like this one better Ruby Dhalla seals her party's nomination Ruby Dhalla has satisfied the Liberals' requirements to avoid a nomination contest in her riding. Print Controversial MP meets Liberal rules to defend Brampton-Springdale I really don't know, which part of the article you wish to be proud of... The fact that if she raises money or at least appears to be raising money, this is a worthy position for an MP. This is one of the more annoying aspects of the Liberals. However, why should we expect any different, the Liberals parachuted Ignatief into the riding, screwed over the riding association, Rigged his nomination and then did just about the same with his becoming leader of the party. Of course the criteria is elistist, but that is expected of an arrogant party with arrogant leadership. Its rather amusing that an MP can purchase a secure nomination. Why prevent other candidates that have the ability to sign up members and challenge Ruby Dhalla in a nomination battle? Its nice to know that the Liberal Party will set aside democracy if you have enough cash. -
You are suggesting they are being "laid off" as opposed to "Fired"? Like you said, no one is quitting..... You make some good points. However, from what I see, those who are working are on the vacation, and can take them, whereas those on EI are hardly on any vacation, even though many feel like going to work would be considered stress leave, vs the frustration of not working. There is EVERY expectation to go job hunting, and it is that much more important to be job hunting when few jobs are posted. Especially since, many jobs are NOT posted during a recession in order to avoid 100s and 1000s of resumes coming in for a single job. There are jobs out there and they aren't posted, and yes you are expected to search for them. Infact, the number of people I know that are in there late 50s and early 60s that have been called into EI to PRODUCE evidence of their jobs search is surprising as I like many people didn't think this is done during a recession. Infact it is done more frequently. When You register you are sent for assessment and often that will land you in a course for 3 weeks to find out what you want to be when you grow up. Lots of Private services in the feeder tray get a piece of the action as the Unemployed are shuffled from place to place to "Upgrade" and often taught by people with less credentials, skills and abilities of those sitting in the students chair. But the trainers have the a good paying job. That is about the biggest difference. You're also right about Pogey. It doesn't pay shit, so maxing out is easy. That doesn't pay your bills which is why people were going to work in the first place. One thing I do see, is that many of these people act and behave such as yourself and others here on MLW until it is them. Then they realize it is no picnic. It doesn't take long for the stress and frustration to take over, and the pressure to build as the payments are missed. EI is a downward slide, and the marginally paying jobs aren't much better and the bills will still pile but it is still a more secure position to find another job. Obviously, Its is not unusual for people to leave a sinking ship and move to a position more secure only to find yourself on another surprise torpedo victim. Do this and there is NO EI. Even though both places close and you may have 20 years in one location. I have seen EI deny someone who left his dead plant a week before the closure and get another 4 months in somewhere else. NO EI. People do believe that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Yet for some reason, if it was all roses, people would be jumping for the EI gravy train. However, it appears from my vantage point that people are collecting EI because their company has left Canada with the aid of the taxpayers and support of the government, often using the money diverted from EI, then punishing those people who are out of a job after decades of employment. Considering the number of people who have been retrained through EI or have used up their claim, and find themselves with NO EI , NO JOB and NO Income.... Sitting around for a year will simply result in a person having no income or job when the claim is over.

Bullshit Is there some who have that kind of working relationship with a boss? There is always a scammer and an accomplis. I don't know of a system that doesn't have thieves attached. That includes the CPC and the LPC who stole from the same pile of money. What you are suggesting is that people who work 960 hours go to their bosses and say, lay me off..... BULLSHIT Regardless of the hours, there are not PILES of people asking to be laid off, and certainly not in a recession. What I do know, is that people are having a difficult time finding enough hours of work after a 2nd or 3rd layoff after having to change jobs because of closures and getting a new job and being last in the door at a place of work often means first out. There is a sucker born every minute....... I don't know to many people who consider collecting EI a "vacation".

1) No the Reforms were eased in when Unemployment was lower then today. Perhaps you are missing the point. So many people are unemployed today and not counted, because EI is one of the major ways of establishing the unemployment rate. The % of those not counted today are significantly higher because many people who work and find themselves unemployed know they cannot collect EI and don't apply. 2) Yes the Liberals are the thieves of the EI system and gave away employee money to corporations. However, that was fine for the Conservatives who did the same thing. However, Ignatieff wants to say it was a mistake, and get in and make some minor changes with the publics support. Why does he want to do this??? Because it is the hottest bandwagon he can jump on. Sure he is late to the party but that is what being an arrogant opportunist is all about. And it works.

This is unbelievable. The Dhalla Office SOLICITED a GOOD LETTER and had an 81 year old Philipino women sign it. There is a trend of the Dhalla people to use Philipinos for their own personal needs and political gain. This certainly didn't gain enough attention. What strikes me is that the entire Dhalla Team and her Liberal Cronies are nothing but arrogant and disgraceful. ABD (ANYONE BUT DHALLA) -

Harper has the reputation of 'Mr. Mean'
madmax replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Ignoring it or the economic trends leading to this are the responsibility of the current government. I do blame him as much as I blame the Provincial Liberals. Anyone government that hands out Billions upon Billions upon Billions of dollars in Moneys, Grants, and Tax Cuts and help enable foreign ownership do as they please, which includes closing up and relocating under the government tab, are indeed the responsibility of the government. Both Liberal and Conservatives share and continue to share the same philosophy. Therefore, I don't blame Harper anymore then anyother North American Government of the past 20 years. This is the direction that there policies intended to take us, and this is the society in which they want to direct Canada. Lower wages, part time and precarious work. Technology to be reserved for an offshore economy along with industrial production. Natural resources are to be exploited with no concern for the citizens who are the actual owners of those resources. Do I blame him??? Damn right, it is what many Conservatives and Liberals believe as the way to govern. It is one I disagree with. Of course I blame him. Do I think this thread title is mean.... yeah, a wee bit. But then its the paper that created the topic. -
Will Ruby Dhalla Survive this Political Scandal?

I couldn't give a damn about an election. This isn't about an election.... and which one?? As the Ontario Liberals have just as much dropped the ball.Ruby appears like a typical elitist. The Ontario Liberals like the Keystone Cops. Yes, foreign nannies are often given equality in our employment system. It is quite apparent that the Ontario Liberals choose to do NOTHING to aid these women and their complaints. You really think that Foreign nannies hand their passports over to "Strangers" and that agencies who called Ruby Dhalla are LYING, when they forced HER to return the passports. I'm saying it stinks to high heaven. And stinking and getting Re Elected don't always happen in the fashion we expect. I could see her getting re elected. I don't believe her. -

But she is in deep doggy doo regardless. -
There is nothing wrong with political adverstising on youth stations. Perhaps it is the content that is offensive to the posters here. If the political adverstising said.... "We are going to clean up our air, water, and make your education better with greater access to post secondary education. All who wish to continue to be doctors, lawyers, nurses, will not be held back because of their parents social status. Your government is here to help the youth of today be the future of tommorrow...." Or...... "remember to switch it OFF" ... those were good political commercials too.. However, commercials that suggest Ignatieff is an intellectual goof, who is an arrogant jerk.... vote for the dink in the blue conservative suit and make your Canada better..... Might not be so appropriate for Youth TV.

When grasping for straws create a boogy man. Now it is the CPC endorsing Media that is to be blamed. Who's next?
-
Nonsense. These attack adds are going over like a lead balloon, regardless of what the G&M prints or any other Media. The strategy is too little too late, and with the public more focused on what the current government is doing, it appears to the public that the only thing this government is capable of doing is attacking. Its a bad strategy that is going to make no gains. I have been looking at the ads and they SUCK!!! The CPC had better find something better to do then throw mud, because if they keep this up, they will be throwing mud as an opposition party.

The NDP has strong environmental credentials and policies. That doesn't mean they own the environment. No party holds ownership of the environment. I don't recall the BC NDP kicking aside the environment. They did campaign to remove a tax that would fail to achieve any goals other then line the pockets of the Liberal Government. Don't confuse cap and trade with "intensity targets". Two very different animals. However, the Liberals do flip flop on Cap and Trade and the Green Party choose to NOT campaign on Cap and Trade, but choose the useless "Carbon Tax" much like the Liberals Did hoping it would be an easy sell if they pretended it was revenue neutral and did good things. So... if the NDP support Cap and Trade, and you claim the CPC support Cap and Trade and We know the Liberals support CAP and TRADE, and the Green Party supports CAP AND TRADE, that means ALL the parties federally support the same policy, therefore the NDP are correct in promoting something universal and that has a CAP on emmissions. That is GOOD. The BC NDP Support CAP and TRADE and not Carbon Tax, just like the Federal NDP. The reason for that is that a Carbon Tax punishes the poor the most, especially if one is using the persons need for home heating as the reason to give INCOME Tax breaks to the Rich. Its not about the "Environment" its about "WHO" pays. And as for the environment, the Carbon Tax doesn't do anything to help the environment but requires people to pollute in order to generate revenue. HAHAHAHAHA that is such bullshit. You mean there was no Industrial Revolution in Britain and the United States. That the buildings that are JET BLACK IN THE UK are not from the Vast Number of COAL that used to be burned in both Industry and Homes. it was the Labour movement and the left that started the long way back to trying to clean things up, each time facing the most powerful forces of the era. Industrialization. Today, that has been replaced with Rampant Land Development and Mall Itis, and HOMES upon Homes and a growth based economy over a Production based economy. Same reason there are few family farms today. Somehow, the fact that Industrializations 2nd major wave is occurring in China, leads you to believe that it is ok if they build 10 more coal plants within a city to harness Cheap energy for their production, so that they can send consumer goods over here. ... you'd prefer that instead of their carbon being accounted for and challenged by our cleaner production in Canada, that we simply import the goods, send them all our gas, don't carbon tax it, but make certain every working person in BC is hit with an uncompetitive tax that punishes those in BC and praises those living in China. It's a shitty program worthy of the Liberals. Regardless you are in good company as the Liberals implemented the tax, won the election on the tax, hold a majority government and can raise your Carbon Tax in the future. I am glad I do not have to pay that assinine tax.

Anything that refers to the NDP as part of "the Big three" is absurd. The NDP especially the Ontario NDP is not BIG in any way shape or form. The Ontario NDP do have a number of elected MPPs who work their tails off to get elected and re elected. But the party is not "big" neither is their caucus. There is little doubt that there are two very strong parties Provincially in Ontario and Federally across the Country. After that, neither of the two larger parties are interested in serious electoral reform. However, our voting public couldn't give a tinkers darn about electoral reform after the last referendum in Ontario and recently in BC where not only were these initiatives Defeated. The public stayed home rather then choose change.

"Coalition would have caused a great divide"
madmax replied to Keepitsimple's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That is correct. The CPC certainly went screamed to high heaven about legitimacy in order to form public opinion. Ignatieff has confirmed that in his opinion the coalition would have been seen as illegitimate in the mind of the public. This may or may not have become the case over time as politics is a strange animal. The Coalition could have become warmly received or extremely hated as they addressed issues. My guess is that with Dion as the head, it would have been disasterous. However, if they had made it past into the new leader era of the LPC, a new light might have been formed. In the meantime, the CPC completely dropped the ball in November, didn't know their ass from a hole in the ground and something needed to be done, because Harper was delirous and disconnected from the economic plight hitting the country. At the end of the day, the LPC and CPC are working together finding new and bizarre ways to give money away to corporate elites. It is the worst of both worlds, and both are blaming the other for the state of affairs. However, this is going worse for Harper then for Ignatieff. Harper overplayed his hand. Don't worry, LPC flip flopping and arrogance will balance this out. There is still time, no election coming soon. Ignatieff is working with a government he supports in every fashion. What is different from Dion, is that Dion was afraid to challenge the government and didn't claim to support the government, where as Ignatieff believes in the policies and actions of the CPC and is only biding time until the LPC think they can win. One thing that is silent are all those yammering hardcore CPC advocates who were demanding an election in January. Seems they have grown silent, with their new silent partner.... the Liberal Party -

You had three independants in your riding. I had heard of Shavluk... as perhaps have many people on MLW, but who is this Huntington and why was there so little coverage of her??? This would have been quite the upset.
