  1. Jean Chretien and Brian Mulroney made this country into a strong economic powerhouse at the beginning of the 21st century and will go down as two of the more effective PMs. Brian Mulroney introduced the GST in 1991, which Chretien then used to eliminate the deficit. NAFTA was signed by Mulroney in 1992, and Chretien again used it to his advantage and the period from 1993-2003 saw huge job growth and the decrease of unemployment. Jean Chretien however was more afraid about the consitutional debates with Quebec while Mulroney tackled this issue head on with Meech and Charlottetown in 1992 (abeit unsuccessfully) Chretien's inaction have resulted in the continued existance of the Bloc anbd Parti Quebecois, both separatist parties and the continued threats of Quebec separatism after 1995 Referendum. Who was more effective between these two men?
  2. I think they've done a decent job two years into their term as government of Canada. Taxes were lowered, but the recessoion fears recently have absolutely nothing to do with Harper's policies, but the state of the economy down south. The federal accountability act got passed in the first two months, and they really handled the Chinese tainted product situation really well by setting up an open website for all the products that were tainted. Afghanistan and the environment are the weak points, but at least they're doing something unlike the liberals who were just chair warming for 13 long years. Mulroney-Schrieber deal was a nonstory.
  3. Clinton Pros: handling of economy and financial house kept in order Relatively peaceful era of leadership cons: was dishonest and didn't go far enough with terrorism Bush Pros: No terror attack since 9/11 and sees the potential of terrorism to harm America unlike Clinton. Strong employment Cons: Horrible government spending led to a trillion dollars deficit. Who did a better job?
  4. Do you think Brian Mulroney just killed the career of Stephen Harper? Immediately after this bombshell, Harper's poll numbers seemed to have dropped quite a bit and the Liberals seem to have retaken the lead they lost in 2005. Will Harper be the next victim of Mulroney's unpopularity like Kim Campbell was in 1993?
  5. Which of these memoirs did you find more interesting? Both were released within the last month and both featured Prime Ministers with a reasonably long term in power (Brian Mulroney and Jean Chretien). I personally liked Brian Mulroney's attitude of waiting until Trudeau was dead before publishing anything personal against him. Show's he is not brainwashed by political correctness and at the same time didn't offend Trudeau.
  6. COULD FORCE ELECTION Tax cuts meant to provoke Liberals John Ivison, National Post, with files from Paul Vieira Published: Tuesday, October 23, 2007 [ deleted by moderator due to copyright and repetition; this was the same article linked article in the opening post ] _____________________________________________________- So the neocons are planning to cut the budget and at the same time cut aid to thousands of poor men and women who need more government assistance in order to get by. Is this what we could expect from Mr. Harper, the Bush of Canada? --- ADDENDUM: This thread is a fusion of two separate threads each started and quoting the same article. The previous thread titles were: Harper Government could present "mini-budget" last gst reduction..., paid for with a flat tax!
  7. I'm liberal but I have to say your claims are sourceless and baseless.
  8. Mr. Harper is like Bush junior. He is nothing more than a puppet of Bush used to expand Canada's role in the widely illegal war on the middle east.
  9. I know Harper isn't doing too well in the polls (last time I checked, Dion had 33% and only 29% for Harper). All I know is that his conservative party is on the same grounds as Bush in terms of foreign policy and since he took office I've only seen a few days of snow due to his lacklustre environmental campaign (it's the beginning of october and I still need to have the air conditioning on. Shame on your environmental record Mr. Baird!). What will probably happen is that the conservative party won't make it through an election in one piece. John Tory on the a smaller note is also losing the battle against the liberals. He can't seem to push his support higher than 34%. If you were to bet on politics, would there be a better chance of Harper winning the next federal election or Tory winning the next provincial election on October 10?
  10. As you might know, Dion won last December the seat that he is currently holding (liberal party leader). He is currently in lalaland right now and I am beginning to think that we might be in an entirely different situation had either Rae or ignatieff got a hold of the leadership. I remember Rae's and Ignatieff's speeches to the party and I thought that right then they had given themselves a chance to face off in a final ballot. Dion shouldn't even be mentioned. His communication skills were so weak he got his speech cut off by the timer. The question is: who (of the top three last year) do you think would've done the best job as Liberal leader?
  11. If I was PM, 32 percent support for my party won't cut it for me. I don't see how any Prime Minister would want an election with what the Conservatives how been pulling through in the polls.
  12. Sure reminds me of the way things used to work in Nazi Germany, eh?
  13. According to all the mess that has been going on, I'm surprised Dion and the Bloc aren't more inclined to bring this government down. Who cares about the polls. I'm sure Dion will experience a "bounce" once he gets his campaign started similar to what happened to Harper in late 2005 (he was behind Martin when the government fell, but then he pulled ahead). So, will the politicians actually let this government sit until March '08 when the government delivers it's next budget? I hope not.
  14. Here is the list: John Diefenbaker: Served six years as PM, in his three terms saw Bill of Rights passed and Avro Arrow terminated. Joe Clark: Ran a minority only nine months before being defeated due to "gas tax". Brian Mulroney: Free trade, GST, and failed consititutional deals. Kim Campbell: First female Prime Minister, ran a horrible campaign Stephen Harper: Current Prime Minister
  15. The Liberals are can't seem to muster much public support, with their numbers at the low 30's to high 20's nationally. Could someone explain to me why this is happening with a new and fresh leader in Stephane Dion?
  16. They have many resources such as timber, mines, and energy that is vital to our Canadian economy. If they leave our country, we are pretty much finished if we don't survive by trading with their beautful nation. So, do you think this means that Quebec will replace the US as our largest trading partner?
  17. I heard that former Quebec Premier and Bloc leader Lucien Bouchard was supposed to receive an order of Canada for promoting french rights and culture but rejected it in the early 2000's. Is this true? If it was, what a shame our system has become.
  18. One more reason why Quebec needs to be pushed out of this country. If we don't bend over to them, they cry. If we do, the west cries and makes these right-wing fanatic fringe parties. For god's sake please end the suffering and separate. I don't care if it means losing 7 million from the population of Canada. There will never be equalibrium in Canada if they remain.
  19. Some people have recently compared Harper to Hitler, including Elizabeth May (though indirectly, it was still related to Hitler) and that federal employee whom I am too lazy to find the name of. It is absolutely disgraceful that the Liberals and their supporters have not come up with anything more intelligent than to compare Harper to Hitler. This reminds me of the stupidity that has come from politics down in Yankeeland where Bush is compared to Hitler (stupid? You bet!). First of all, he conservatives are not appeasing the devil as the so intelligent Elizabeth May claims. The Conservatives are ACTUALLY doing something to help stop climate change abeit not very effective actions. At least they're doing something unlike the British policy to Hitler in 1930's, which was on a whole larger scale. One more reason to ignore green party and liberals and go for NDP.
  20. Stephen Harper is what a true conservative is about. Why does Joe Clark support the Liberals now when he clearly was a tory and even supported Defiebaker and Brian Mulroney ?
  21. Why do some people consider it to be the finance minister?
  22. I have always ignored the Toronto sun because it looks more like a magazine than an actual newspaper that one could get decent news out of. The Toronto sun is the only newspaper where graphics fills in more space than the actual writing. Not too much information. Now, I was curious as to who the Sun is against and who they are for. My guess is since it looks like a magazine it has to be left-leaning because conservative magazines don't look so artful. Ain't I correct?
  23. I heard on a radio today that Olivia Chow is running towards replacing her husbad as the leader of the NDP. Maybe now finally the NDP will at least get enough support to form at least the official opposition as Olivia is more popular among ethnic urban voters than Jack is and that'll mean the NDP stealing seats from traditional liberal strongholds. Does anyone here know the story? If it is true, will Olivia Chow revive the NDP back to its Ed Broadbent days and beyond?
  24. Here is what he had to offer Canada yet we still had to vote him out of office. He definately has a credible chance of being the most effective PM in Canadian history. 1. The GST- effectively used by Chretien to end the economic crisis of the 1980's-1990's. Yet we still fail to reckonize that Mulroney was the one who should be credited with solving the problem. 2. The Free Trade Agreement- making more companies willing to do business with Canada. This led to the economic growth and jobs in Canada we see today. 3. The Constitutional talks which were brilliantly handled but had to fail because of mulroney's powerful critics like Trudeau. By destroying the Meech Lake agreement, Trudeau and Chretien broke Canada apart by making Quebec reject the Canada Act. 4. His government was clean of any major Scandals.
  25. It was Chretien who stole their money in the scandal, not martin. Yet we ended up kicking martin and denying him a majority government. We should be ashamed of ourselves. Martin got kicked, and Chretien is playing golf when he should be in prison. Congrats democracy!
