  1. An hour, two days.... It is terrorism, the people there have a right to be ticked off.
  2. Pretty good one - its about time the gov't quit abrogating its responsibilities and act responsibly on the side of law and order. http://www.torontosun.com/Comment/Commenta...23/1592887.html EDITORIAL: Caledonia deserves better -snip- But simply blaming the townspeople after five weeks of growing frustrations, inconvenience, traffic headaches, damaged roads and economic disruption would be unfair. (And of course, for the developers whose land the natives are occupying in support of their claim, the situation is even more dire.) Easy for Premier Dalton McGuinty and others to appeal for calm -- their lives aren't being disrupted. Yesterday, one native leader praised the restraint he said native occupiers have shown, adding, "our people are responding without weapons, using only their bodies to assert that we are a sovereign people ... and that we cannot be intimidated." Terrific. The problem is that both he and McGuinty need to realize that millions of Ontarians (and Canadians) do not think aboriginals , or anyone else, deserve brownie points for not using weapons to settle a dispute . They think that should be a given. And they are fed-up with disputes like this one that drag on ad nauseam while politicians utter platitudes. You want, calm, premier? Show us there is one law for everyone -- native and non-native -- that judges people based not on who they are, but on how they act.
  3. Guess the liberals are getting pretty desparate for a good story - if this is the best complaint they can come up with, we should be able to maintain that majority territory.
  4. Errant Caledonians - how about errant natives - taking out transformer stations and theft of hydro, not to mention destruction of public roads etc. etc. etc. McGuinty should deduct the cost of damages from the welfare cheques. Civil authority has been cowed, the authorities are giving in to terrorism. The locals are understandably upset at the t aking down of one barricade as a good will gesture, while mainaiting two other blockades - hardly hardly a peace offering. No group should be above the law. www.citizensofcaledonia.ca ------------------------------------------------------------- It has now been confirmed by Haldimand Hydro that there is now theft of power from hydro poles. A citizen called Haldamind Hydro about a suspicous looking hookup to a hydro pole. You and I will be paying for this Hydro usage on our bills... Even more - I believe that the Natives are reluctant to open Argyle Street because they do not want to remove these sources of stolen Hydro for their camps. An email received states: "I called Haldimand Hydro this morning to ask that my street light get fixed (it is awful dark at night) and asked about the situation. They admitted that the hook-ups are illegal and they are worried that they could be potentially dangerous - but there is nothing they can do about it. The electricity is being stolen by these illegal hook-ups."
  5. http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid...icle%2FShowFull -snip- So that's all right then? We can all relax? Hardly. Whether or not President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Islamist regime are yet publicly marking out their non-Muslim second-class citizens is not the point. Iran has moved much further already. It is deep into a relentless campaign to delegitimize Jews and other infidels everywhere. It has leapt over a first step of denigrating its own minorities to the second step of denigrating them the world over. In Ahmadinejad's world view, and in his vicious daily rhetoric, Israel has no right to exist, and will be wiped out, because the Jews have no right to a country of their own. And if a world without the United States seems unrealistic now, then it is a dream, he tells his followers, that must not be abandoned.................... Not to mention that Iran has just tested a long range missile http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid...icle%2FShowFull
  6. P.S. In a nutshell, the natives sold the land 1841, no question there, but one faction disagreed with sale; and for this we have to put up with illegal barricades, sabotage and violence. By the way, I sure hope that the gov't compensates the Caledonians for their loss of work over the hydro sabotage - and rightly deducts it from payments to natives. Speaking of the gov't where is McGuinty, its about time he stepped in and put a stop to these illegal activities, once and for all.
  7. http://www.mapleleafweb.com/forums//index.php?showtopic=5799 see MB's post here....and note that Iran still has not denied it.
  8. Darn !!! It does show that there is a fair sized radical left at work.
  9. I agree, if they had not set up illegal barricades in the first place, this would not have happened. They are not, and should not be above the law. Who's going to pay for the damages - the taxpayers of course. Maybe its time to work out a solution so that they can be a real sovereign nation, with borders - and guess what - no more gov't hand outs from the ROC. Not that I would give them Toronto (well maybe I would ). LOL ) Glad to see that the http://citizensofcaledonia.ca/What_Can_I_Do.htm website is back up and running. They have a right to freedom of speech also.
  10. Check out Lorrie Goldstein today, its a hoot http://www.torontosun.com/News/Columnists/...23/1592890.html "Good evening ladies and gentlemen. I'm Lloyd Newman-Mansbridge and it's time for the national news. "A new poll tonight shows support for the Stephen Harper government slipping in its ongoing war with the Parliamentary Press Gallery. "The poll, done exclusively for the press gallery by the polling firm 'Opinions 'R Us,' was taken after the prime minister's recent announcement that the media will be moved from their existing offices near Parliament Hill, onto a barge in the middle of the Ottawa River. "However, the survey was completed before Lloyd Robertson and Peter Mansbridge chained Kevin Newman to the front doors of the House of Commons in protest. "And the results are bad news for the Conservatives as they show that while 5% of the public support the prime minister on this issue, 3% side with the Parliamentary Press Gallery. "Meanwhile, 92% of those surveyed offered no opinion, or, as they put it to the pollsters, 'obviously you mistake me for someone who gives a s...' "We now take you to Ottawa for more on this poll and its startling findings from our parliamentary reporter, Ego Maniac. "Good-evening, Ego. We'll get to the mood in Ottawa tonight in light of this new poll in a moment. But first, you appear to be standing fairly far away from Parliament Hill. Could you explain to our television audience why that is?" "Yes I can, Lloyd. Early this morning on orders from the prime minister, our offices and equipment in the press gallery building were moved to Kingston. All we were told is that there isn't enough room for everyone on the barge in the Ottawa River and so the prime minister is making the tough decisions necessary after 12 long years of corrupt Liberal rule." "I see, Ego. But isn't forcing you to do your broadcasts from Kingston, Ontario a little bit extreme on Harper's part?" "Actually, I'm in Kingston, Jamaica, Lloyd." "Oh ... Well in any event, Ego, what about this new poll?" "Lloyd, as you know, the poll shows a sharp spike in public support for the Parliamentary Press Gallery in this dispute. "Our ... Oops, I mean their poll, shows support for the media has risen from 2% of Canadians surveyed to 3% since the Jan. 23 election. Meanwhile, the Harper government is stalled at 5% support, while the undecideds, or, in the words of the pollster, those who responded, 'don't you ever !!@$?! call me at this !!@$?! number again, you stupid !!@$?!', have dropped from 93% to 92%. This shows that as people start to get their heads around this issue, they are deciding in favour of the media."
  11. Hmmm, talk about hard left - lets hope they adopt these policies, it would bode well for the CPC, allready in majority territory. http://www.ndpsocialists.ca/ Over thirty activists, based in fifteen different NDP constituency associations spread across southern Ontario, gathered in Toronto on May 20 -- their goal: to take the fight for anti-war, anti-imperialist policies, and for greater democracy and socialism, to the New Democratic Party federal convention in Quebec City, September 8-10, 2006. The NDP Socialist Caucus Conference adopted a package of thirty-three bold policies, designating sixteen of them as priority resolutions. The latter feature calls for: removal of Canadian troops from Afghanistan and Haiti, solidarity with Palestine, social ownership and economic democracy, abrogation of the global corporate trade deals (FTA, NAFTA, etc.), elimination of university tuition fees, repeal of the federal Clarity Act, a massive increase in social housing construction, along with measures to enforce leadership accountability and to strengthen democracy in the NDP. (See the full package below. The deadline for submission of resolutions to Federal NDP office in Ottawa is July 10.) In a separate discussion on plans by NDP officials to change the party's federal constitution, SC conference participants approved a structural proposal that would increase local riding and union representation on the NDP Federal Council, the highest party body between conventions which meets twice a year.
  12. I guess we are in a wait and see mode, thanks for posting that.
  13. What deity decided that there is something intrinsically fair about charging everyone the same 'percentage' tax? When it comes to taxes 'fair' is a matter of opinion so you cannot argue that flat taxes are any 'fairer' than progressive taxes. In any case, most flat tax advocates don't really want a flat tax: they just want to reduce the number of tax brackets from 5 to 2 and in the process significantly increase the taxes on the middle class while cutting taxes for the rich.My opinion: if we can afford to reduce taxes then everyone should benefit. No one should see their taxes go up as a result of a 'reform' to the system. I can agree with that.
  14. Adamson, Rondi: The Harper government has not yet revealed much about its "made-in-Canada" plan for the environment, other than a proposal to subsidize transit passes. But the fact that it has been willing to admit, via Environment Minister Rona Ambrose, the fecklessness of Canada trying to reach its Kyoto targets is a powerful indicator that it is more concerned with substance than with putting on a good international show. Ms. Ambrose isn't heroic for dispelling some of our national myths. ... Environmental groups and politicians have called on Ms. Ambrose to resign from chairing the UN negotiations on climate change, because of those comments. Why? Would it have been better for her to make empty promises? According to some, yes. ... Whether the Liberals were misleading us about Kyoto, or just plain stupid, doesn't matter. They talked and accomplished nothing. The evidence suggests that Mr. Harper is being realistic. So far, however, the Harper government has simply abandoned Kyoto, de facto, by slashing funding for numerous programs. I would prefer Mr. Harper continue what he has started. He can show us how serious he is about tackling environmental problems, by formally withdrawing Canada from Kyoto ...this from the Toronto Star yesterday, page A16
  15. Eliminating deductions for legimate expenses required to earn income is not an option. For example, a vendor selling hot dogs on the street may have gross sales of $60/year but have to pay out $40K/year for food, propane and city permits. Charging that person a flat tax calculated on $60K/year is simply criminal and would discourage people from starting new businesses.Tax deductions for legimate business expenses are unavoidable - so people who think a flat tax will eliminate the need for tax accountants are simply wrong. Furthermore, I need no reason why someone earning 20K/year should pay the same percentage tax as someone earning 100K/year provided the taxes on the person earning 100K/year are not punative. Insisting that everyone must pay the same 'percentage' of their income is a perverse form of social engineering designed to help the wealthiest people in society at the expense of the middle class. I do realize that a flat tax will never fly, and the best we can hope for is to simplify the system and level it out. However, a percentage tax on a higher income, obviously results in a higher amount of tax being deducted. There is no suggestion that all income be taxed at an actual amount, a percentage always results in a higher amount. As long as the lower income earners have a higher tax credit, I don't see the problem. Social engineering would more aptly describe the attempts to lower all people to the same lowest income level. Socialism doesn't try to raise people up, it brings people down to the lowest common denominator.
  16. Fox news is as good a news source as any, if we only posted from the Red Star for instance, we'd have a pretty uneven view of life. The U.N. is united allright, united in its anti U.S. anti Israel bias. It is united in wanting 'wealth distribution' and continually holding its hand out to the west, treating our wealth as theirs, to distribute as they wish.
  17. Sure, the liberals said it was a "patronage" appointment, how patently absurd! They of all folks should recognize patronage when they see it, but I guess they never paid off old party friends with lucrative political plums. Except that, Mr. Morgan, would have been paid only $1.00 ... After years of Liberal patronage, it was exactly what Canada needed, it was the best deal around for eons, Too bad the NDP and Liberal majority on this committee couldn't look past partisan politics and do what was best for the country.
  18. Which has what to do with liberal arrogance and anti U.S. bias, the Liberals are still playing to the lowest denominator - witness their partisiian behaviour over Gwyn Morgan last week, a classic example of the lunatics taking over the assylum.
  19. So, let's assume you spend 30% of your gross income to make the same as a teacher who has no employment expenses. Are you ok with paying the same amount of tax as that teacher? In fact, some people with employment expenses would end up paying more than 100% of their net income to the gov't in such a system.I am pretty sure a flat tax system will not affect your situation a bit. It would just eliminate deductions for tutition, medical expenses, charitable donations etc. A flat tax with all loopholes closed should work out better for all. It would also ensure the the top earners paid that percentage too. Low income earners would have their tax exemption increased, but everyone would be playing by the same rules. A flat tax is a fair methid and would treat people equally. A wealthy taxpayer with 500 times taxable income of another taxpayer would pay 500 times more in taxes. No longer would the tax code penalize success and discriminate against citizens on the basis of income.
  20. You should've seen Jane Taber tried to trip Rona Ambrose on Question Period. Jane's partisanship had clearly shown. Some of these media are blindly spewing the same lines as the party. She smugly announced the interview with Ambrose indicating she placed the Minister on the hot seat.....and yet all she did was get excited (practically telling Ambrose she's a hypocrite for still going to the discussion table), and got Ambrose to clarify on issues. In the end, it was Ambrose who had a smug look as she patiently explained to Jane, who ended up looking ignorant. And yes, it's anti-Americanism that's got them foaming in the mouth. LOL, right along with anything from the Fraser Institute, I suppose nothings credible unless it comes from the CBC or the Red Star. I think we should be more worried about the covert attempts by the liberals to undermine the gov't and grab back the power they so crave. http://ottsun.canoe.ca/News/National/2006/...591652-sun.html Mon, May 22, 2006 Tories to roll out fuel plan By ALAN FINDLAY, PARLIAMENTARY BUREAU The Tory government is expected to announce plans tomorrow requiring that all Canadian gasoline contain 5% renewables, such as ethanol and biodiesel, within four years. Environment Minister Rona Ambrose, Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn and Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl are scheduled to meet with officials from several provinces in Regina tomorrow to discuss, among other things, the Conservatives' renewables plan and how to achieve the standard by 2010. Ambrose told reporters last Friday she is focused on the issue as a first step toward cleaning up Canada's air.
  21. I tend to agree with MBurns, we don't know yet if it is false. There is an article here, which leads me to wonder if maybe it was true, or was intended but are going to have to back down due to publicity. Maybe, the token Jewish MP had no choice with his comments. http://news.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=684952006 Even though the regime officially recognises Judaism as an official religious minority and the Jewish community is even allocated a seat in the Iranian parliament, the reality on the ground is different. Jewish leaders are reluctant to draw attention to incidences of mistreatment of their community, due to fear of government reprisal, along with fear of being arrested or accused of being spies. In 1999, 13 Jews were arrested in the city of Shiraz and charged with spying for Israel. While eventually all were pardoned, it exposed the fragile position of the country's Jewish community. here is another joke "Jewish schools in Iran": "While there are Jewish schools, the principals and most of the teachers are Muslim, the Bible is taught in Farsi, not in Hebrew, and the schools are forced to open on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath," Amir said, as he played Hebrew music for his listeners. "So while the regime declares that there is freedom of religion, it is all just for the sake of appearances."
  22. Not anymore they're not. As for the Weisenthall centre, they have no business confirming or denying reports about laws passed in the Iranian parliament and a credible news organization would not hold them and un-named expatriots up as sources for such a stunning claim. The Weisenthall centre is not an authority on Iran. The National Post has egg all over its face and it's credibility is in the gutter. The Weisenthall Centre has as much business confirming or denying reports etc. than any other outfit, or newspaper. I agree that the NP should make some comment or retraction, I would like to hear what they have to say. I'm not into conspiracy theories, but there is something odd about the whole thing, WC and expats. believed it to be so. Is it possible that this was put out to the media deliberately, as in, if they cry wolf too often, when it really happens they won't believe it. The Iranian leader is a madman, but he's crazy like a fox, who knows what he is really up to.
  23. This guys a real turd, he should stay over there if he sympathizes with terrorism so much. http://www.memri.org/bin/opener_latest.cgi?ID=SD116506 U.S. Linguist Noam Chomsky Meets With Hizbullah Leaders in Lebanon According to Hizbullah's Al-Manar TV network, Professor Noam Chomsky of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) visited Hizbullah headquarters this week, meeting with the organization's secretary-general Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in a Beirut suburb as well as with other Hizbullah leaders. The U.S. State Department lists Hizbullah as a "terrorist organization." [1] It should be noted that Sheikh Nasrallah frequently calls for the destruction of the U.S. [2] On May 13, 2006, Professor Chomsky was quoted by Al-Manar as saying, "Hizbullah's insistence on keeping its arms is justified... I think Nasrallah has a reasoned argument and [a] persuasive argument that they [the arms] should be in the hands of Hizbullah as a deterrent to potential aggression, and there is plenty of background reasons for that. So until, I think his position [is] reporting it correctly and it seems to me [a] reasonable position, is that until there is a general political settlement in the region, [and] the threat of aggression and violence is reduced or eliminated, there has to be a deterrent, and the Lebanese army can't be a deterrent." Al-Manar goes on to state, "When asked about the U.S. list of terrorist states, he [Chomsky] said [that] if the U.S. was to stick to the clear and precise definition of terrorism in its code of laws, it would be the leading terrorist state." [3] During his visit to Lebanon, Chomsky also spoke at the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Center for American Studies and Research at the American University of Beirut. [4] The following are excerpts from a report on Lebanese New TV about a meeting in Lebanon between American linguist Prof. Noam Chomsky and Hizbullah leaders. [5] TO VIEW THIS CLIP: http://www.memritv.org/search.asp?ACT=S9&P1=1136 . Anchor: "The leftist Jewish American intellectual Noam Chomsky toured Al-Khiyam Prison at the end of his visit to Lebanon. He declared that the victory achieved by the resistance is a victory for all the peoples that fight injustice and oppression."
  24. I wrote a letter to the editor a number of years ago about employment equity, (was against reverse discrimination and raising people above their levels etc. etc. ) My company at that time was heavily into EE having 3 highly paid Employment Equity officers. A close friend of mine reported that she was close by when one of the officers was reading my letter out loud, and remarked that 'she'll never get another promotion'. So, when they offered an early retirement program to all eligible employees, I took it. Since then I use my maiden name when I write letters to the editor. It was a good move as I got full pension and was able to get a job elsewhere within a month of retiring. In today's age of PC its not a good idea to use your real name on a public board. This board is better moderated and more civil then most, but even so, I wouldn't use my real name. Actually there was incident on another board prior to the last election. A person did use their real name, which was used publicly against him by people from Rabble.ca Politics can be nasty and that was a good example of why not to use your real name. Cheers
  25. You've been had: http://www.mapleleafweb.com/forums//index.php?showtopic=5787 In all honesty, when I saw the National Post front page yesterday I thought to myself "no f'n way...this cannot be true". Guess my instinct was correct. You and Stephen Harper think alike btw! He invoked images of Nazi Germany also. Classy. Advice to both of you for next time: Wait for a more credible news source to corroberate any exclusive stories from the National Post/Disgrace. The NP is as credible as any other source, and obviously the Weisenthall centre believed it.
