Ontario Election 2007 -- Voting Irregularities
scribblet replied to kengs333's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
There were no 'voting irregularities' there were problems with the voters list and a computer addressing glitch, which sent people to the wrong ridings. All they had to do was go into their returning office and get it fixed, and get a new certificate to vote. -
Darfur the slaughter continues with the UN on the ground.

I don't get it...people don't want our soldiers killed in Afghanistan or Iraq, but it's okay for them to be killed in Darfur ! -

I got this from another site, but how many of us had even heard about it until the last 3 weeks? There were no community meetings in my kneck of the woods that I'm aware of of. -
This tells about how this woman died in the desert, trying to cross illegally into the US. The family wants the US to put an end to desert crossing but once again they blame the U.S. while they never blame the smuggler who left this woman for dead, and nowhere do they apologize for their daughter attempting to come over to the US illegally and use the their resources normally available for citizens. This woman was wrong, she and her supporters need to take responsibility for their own actions, Are we supposed to hang our heads and be ashamed because she chose to do this? http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2007/09...l?th&emc=th

Muslim Medical Students Getting Picky
scribblet replied to scribblet's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Further to this: http://www.musalman.com/islamnews/cair_med...ool_update.html It appears to me that this U.S. school was trying to avert incidents such as those in the previous posts but CAIR of course is going to bat for them. As for the police officer incident, I'll wager that eventually there'll be a problem, and an even bigger one if it involves a male muslim and female suspects. etc. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MUSLIM MEDICAL SCHOOL APPLICANT ACCEPTED AFTER BEING GRANTED SECOND INTERVIEW First interview included inappropriate questions about Islam (WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/26/99) - A Muslim applicant to State University of New York (SUNY) Stony Brook School of Medicine has been given a letter of acceptance after initially being turned down for admission. The letter came following a second interview that resulted from the intervention of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Washington-based Islamic advocacy group. The Muslim applicant told CAIR that the first interview included what she says were degrading and inappropriate questions about her religious beliefs and about the role of women in Islam. -snip- CAIR publishes a booklet called "An Educator's Guide to Islamic Religious Practices" that is designed to prevent just such incidents. There are an estimated six million Muslims in this country and some 1.2 billion worldwide. Islam is one of the fastest growing faiths in the United States. -
Obviously overt attempts to shutting down oppposing opinions.

Muslim Medical Students Getting Picky
scribblet replied to scribblet's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
You'll note that I have disagreed with health professionals opting out of dispensing the morning after pill etc. As another poster has said, it is gradually chipping away at our customs and practices until accommodation is made for theirs, and we start to have a dual system. That is the intent of refusals etc. fortunately up until now: "The GMC said it had received requests for guidance over whether students could “omit parts of the medical curriculum and yet still be allowed to graduate”. Professor Peter Rubin, chairman of the GMC’s education committee, said: “Examples have included a refusal to see patients who are affected by diseases caused by alcohol or sexual activity, or a refusal to examine patients of a particular gender.” He added that “prejudicing treatment on the grounds of patients’ gender or their responsibility for their condition would run counter to the most basic principles of ethical medical practice”. " Wonder how long this will last. -
Muslim Medical Students Getting Picky
scribblet replied to scribblet's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Excuse me, it is an issue, they can't pick and choose what part they want to learn or practice. They can't or shouldn't be allowed to refuse to learn about or treat STDs etc. they shouldn't be able to take the Hippocratic oath then refuse to live up to it. They are not supposed to be picking and choosing whos lives they might save. Same goes for pharmacists of any religion, they shouldn't be allowed to refuse to dispense the morning after pill either. One muslim chap failed to complete his training (and rightly) because he refused to examine a woman patient as part of his final exams. If that's the way they feel they can to Islamic countries and practice there, not here. -

No doubt, it's a thinly veiled drive by smear tactic. We all get unsolicted mail, email and phone calls...who doesn't. I agree, no point in feeding this one. -

Well, one of them (Koffman) posts on Rabble ALL parties keep such lists, they ALL send out cards and information. The information is gleaned from various sources, much of which is a good guess, sometimes wrong. A good guess would have been the name Koffman being Jewish, which she is actually. -

I think there are more important issues to get you knickers in a knot about. All political parties send out greeting cards, and the fact that the recipient is posting about it on rabble tells you that the only reason this person is making an issue out of it is for - guess what - political reasons - she's obviously not a conservative LOL -
Left wingism and socialism is nothing more than attempting to make all people equally poor. It is about social engineering and and inherent in its ideology is a tyranny that will use force if necessary to take from those who produce - to redistribute to those who don't. Under socialism the State is the all powerful.

How far should a country or society go to accommodate religious beliefs, surely any students who refuse to comply with the medical standards should be booted out. Better still, why not ask students the pertinent questions before allowing them into the medical school. Better that seat go to someone who really wants to practice medicine and help ALL people. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/h...icle2603966.ece From The Sunday Times October 7, 2007 Muslim medical students get picky Some Muslim medical students are refusing to attend lectures or answer exam questions on alcohol-related or sexually transmitted diseases because they claim it offends their religious beliefs. Some trainee doctors say learning to treat the diseases conflicts with their faith, which states that Muslims should not drink alcohol and rejects sexual promiscuity. A small number of Muslim medical students have even refused to treat patients of the opposite sex. One male student was prepared to fail his final exams rather than carry out a basic examination of a female patient. The religious objections by students have been confirmed by the British Medical Association (BMA) and General Medical Council (GMC), which both stressed that they did not approve of such actions. cont...

Most leaders usually get to go through one election to test their mettle, but Dion has to figure out what time is the right time for him. IMHO Harper is the better stratageist and since the Liberals are divided and broke it wouldn't be a good idea for them to bring the gov't down. Besides, I havn't seen a decent economic plan from the Liberals, whereas Harper's seems to be working, not to mention the longer the Tories are in power, the more people realize that the 'scary scary' stuff was simply Liberal rhetoric and hogwash. cheers

Mixed Member Proportional representation
scribblet replied to Denny's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
In Western Europe, 21 of 28 countries use proportional representation, including Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. Germany, Bolivia and Venezuela have the mixed MMP. -
That's a hoot suggesting that the tories can 'ram' any legislation through with a minority gov't.

I agree, it's great he's taking a stand, and 2 /3 of the declared funding is going to prevention and treatment - what's wrong with that? Why on earth do people think it's okay to use or sell drugs with no punishment or war on it - in fact, the term 'war on drugs' is more left wing spin which plays to anti -americanism. Not to mention that the Harper gov't has actually extended the license of the Vancouver safe injection site, so anyone who plays the anti-Americanism card is simply blindly partisan - or downright blind - likely the former.
