In the small-ish town where I grew up in the '80s there was like one South Asian family in town and they lived in an apartment block that became universally known as the "Paki Palace." I remember a column in a major city newspaper about a strike by cab drivers that used the same racial slur and said "it's not just the cabs that are yellow." Those 17,000 in BC (I've yet to see a source for this number btw) were basically the entire population in Canada. By 1941, there were 35,000 Chinese people in the entire country, I wonder why they only barely doubled their numbers over that span... It's a restriction, you m0r0n. That doesn't mean your experience with racism was universal. I doubt those. people who were Indigenous, Asian, Black etc who were around back then would tell the same story. LOl you've never heard of hyperbole, Christ you're lame. Not really, no. The 1881 Census listed 4,383 Chinese in Canada. There may have been more, but we're talking a few thousand, tops. A head tax is literally a restriction, do you not know what words mean? It *restricted* immigration to those who could pay and was explicitly designed to discourage Chinese people from entering Canada after the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway. As for this being a brief period, Chinese immigrants were restricted by the Head Tax from 1885 to 1923, at which point they were banned outright until 1968. That's 83 years and damn near the entire first half of this country's history. There was a literal ban on Chinese immigrants for almost 25 years. Note how you can't actually put a number to any of these because it would show how tiny non-white immigration was for the bulk of Canada's history (which, again, was completely by design). The irony of you being a pedantic b!tch because you don't have the reading skills to recognize hyperbole while being completely ignorant of the extent of Canada's historical immigration restrictions is rich. But you should take it up with user @I am Groot. Go tell him he's all wrong about Canada being racially homogenous for most of its history and that Canada prior to 1968 was a rainbow multicultural paradise of acceptance.

Amazing that you can call me uneducated when you seem unaware of the existence of the Head Tax, Chinese Exclusion Act, Immigration Act of 1910 (including the Continuous Journey Regulation) among other race-based restrictions on immigration that served to keep immigration from non-white countries low but I suppose they probably didn't teach that stuff when you were in school in the 1940s. Sure the government was happy to bring in a few thousand Chinese workers to do the dirty work of building the railroad (much to the chagrin of white workers) because they were cheap and disposable, and black workers were imported for low-wage, low-status service jobs but the idea that the presence of these small and ill-treated minorities meant somehow meant non white immigrants were welcome with open arms is utterly absurd. Oh btw Victoria never had a Black mayor. There was a Black guy who served on the city council for two years in 1867. You dipshit.
