Unfortunately there is also a cadre of people that thinks that the French have some duty to be submissive to the English because of that battle, hundreds of years ago.

So you still think you have human right and freedom?
Remiel replied to bjre's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Wikipedia actually has a decent description of Section 1 and some of the applicable judicial tests I mentioned yesterday. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_One_of_the_Canadian_Charter_of_Rights_and_Freedoms Anyone who wants to play armchair-lawyer should probably look carefully at the steps of the Oakes test. -
Should NATO ban the use of depleted uranium?
Remiel replied to Machjo's topic in The Rest of the World
But that is the whole point, Bonam. Of course weapons are designed to kill in combat. Weapons that continue to kill after hostilities have ceased are problematic. -
Of course nothing will change as long as we hold onto the belief that we should have elections based on what we think the outcome will be. That is, if you ask me, part of the malaise that is gripping our political system. And frankly, the cost, hassle and political pandering of an election suddenly seems somewhat less significant ( and just less) compared to the crap we have been going through since the last one.

Of course that is always what it comes down to it seems. Never an election when you ought to, only when its good for you.

I would like an election.

I had not noticed that before. There is no way in hell that would pass any fair test under the Charter. And by " fair test " I mean the ones the judiciary has actually developed to judge whether infringement on a right is " reasonable " . -
Obama mad at General McChrystal

Militaries everywhere have very long traditions of bringing down a giant-sized hammer on dissing your commanding officer. One person in my family was nearly court-martialled for it back in one of the World Wars. -
Should NATO ban the use of depleted uranium?
Remiel replied to Machjo's topic in The Rest of the World
I think we have two different questions here. One is, " Do we ban the use of depleted uranium altogether? " and one is, " Do we ban the use of depleted uranium in munitions? " This thread is really about the latter. The first one, banning it from any use, is hardly necessary. -
I do not subscribe to the entertainment value of lunacy theory of internet forum moderation.

Hopefully it will soon be extended to a permanent absence...

Govt 2.0 Leaps Forward in Australia

If I must be addicted to video games, I suppose I could at least play useful ones, hehehe... Though this is thread drift, I suppose, I have long thought that there is a great untapped potential for education in video games. -
Natives to win HST concessions from Ottawa

You have a funny idea of what counts as an insult. You could of just used " abnormal " but you had to emphasize it, " ABNORMAL " , which makes it abundantly clear that it is you who are insulting. -

We will have to respectfully disagree on that then. -

That sounds way too much like continuing towards the Surveillance State at full steam. A lot of tracking takes place under the current system, but at least you have the option to pay cash if you do not like being tracked. -
Maybe you should read between the lines.

Texas State Republican Platform Released
Remiel replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
The answer was found further down in the document it seems. The hypocrisy of saying that parenthood and the right to teach your children as you may is sacred, and then saying that if you are homosexual you have no such rights, is disgusting. It is revolting. -
Texas State Republican Platform Released
Remiel replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Absolutely. One step thinking is generally not a laudable quality, however. I just read the section on Homosexuality. I do not quite understand what they mean by opposing special priviliges for custody of children by homosexuals. Is it a reference to adoption, or do they actual oppose biological homosexual parents having custody of their own children if the opposing parent is heterosexual? -

I am in the middle of reading it, but I am not likely to give a comprehensive analysis right now. One tidbit I found interesting however, was this: I think that it is somewhat interesting or odd, because given the previously stated belief (more or less) that terrorism is the number one threat to Texas, and that they have some seeming disdain for Muslims, it means that one of the favourite tools for exposing extremist Imams and mosques, the contributors list, would suddenly become unavailable. -
I look forward to the report detailing the costs of vandalism during the protests.

America's "Open Data Guru" speaks
Remiel replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Media and Broadcasting
Alright. I think the implication of the homogenization of prices may be more akin to how the market was supposed to work all along, so it may not represent us needed a shift in our theories as much as the market has shifted to resemble our theories. As for your earlier posts about changing how money works though: I am not sure it would be practical, or desirable. For instance, an expiry date on money would be useless, if I understand it correctly. In very short order a system would emerge by which money which is about to expire is traded to people who are ready to spend it immediately in exchange for money with a later expiry date. That would just create a wasteful subsystem. Also, could you elaborate more on what you mean by money with " to " and " from " aspects? I think there are significant problems with such an idea, though I would like to be sure I am properly understanding what you mean before voicing an opinion that may not be relevant. -

This won't sound very convincing (since it is an intuition), but how you state it seems... off, to me. I am not quite sure how to state it myself, however. But, a more solid point to be aware of: I am pretty sure that it was " as if an invisible hand " not " there is an invisible hand " . It is a common error. There is no " invisible hand " ; it was only ever meant as an metaphor. -

If person A sells drugs to person B, and person B forces person C to take those drugs, is person A liable for what happens to person C in the same way they would be liable if person B had taken the drugs?
