  1. There are a lot of strong Aboriginal Christians in Manitoba. They won't hear any criticism of their religion. My wife and I have no religion. I was raised in the United Church but over the years I have come to believe that Christianity was a borrowed religion from others that came before it.
  2. Some place besides your personal opinion.
  3. Some of those same Progressive Conservatives are working for the Conservatives now. When will the rest of the PCs be removed from the party? And Vic Toews had lots of power as Attorney-General. Just look it up. Find out what he did. "Toews often criticized the federal Liberal government's record on crime issues, but also gave support to a number of federal proposals. In March 1997, he endorsed a plan by federal Justice Minister Allan Rock to give the police greater powers to target outlaw biker gangs.[21] The following year, he stood with federal minister Lloyd Axworthy to announce a plan to discourage court sentences for non-violent aboriginal offenders. Toews argued that the proposal would reduce the number of repeat offenders, and said that it was "sensitive to the needs of the aboriginal community".[22] He later supported a proposal for the integration of an aboriginal healing lodge into the provincial prison system.[23]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vic_Toews
  4. How are relations between Aboriginal Christians and Aboriginals with Native beliefs?
  5. You've often mentioned that you would like equalization to end. Here is one solution that hastens that end. It would also mean Westen Canada started at Thunder Bay. <heh>
  6. Forgive me if I'm wrong, why isn't Christianity rejected by some Natives as being a foreign invention used to subjugate them?
  7. A recent Canadian translation of the bible uses both male and female monikers for God.
  8. I considered this but it is only a federal decision that can make that change. Ontario and Manitoba actually fought one another on this...literally. It took Britain to decide it for us. That decison making power is now in Ottawa. And how would it affect Ontario that much? They lose three provincial seats. They gain much financially. Manitoba gains as well and equalization goes down nationally. There has been momentum building on this in the last months. It took an academic study to really judge the fitness. More study is needed. It isn't unprecendent. Manitoba was once the postage stamp province. Quebec didn't it's northern territory until decades after becoming a province. Northwest Territories were calved off into Nunavut.
  9. There's the rub though. You can only do your best for any children. They will find their own way and who they love, marry and have children with. In the end, it is you who might come to their way of thinking rather than the other way around. I imagine it is the same with African, Asian or Caucasion families when their kids marry into a different cultural background. Gets even more compilcated if the kids are gay or transgendered. In the end, a parent comes to their child's point of view or risks losing them forever. An Elders wisdom is only respected if children are allowed to grow, to love and to have families of their own and are not inhibited by the prejudices of those who have not lived that type of life.
  10. In 1920, scrolls were found in Egypt in Nag Hammadi. The scrolls date back to 150 AD. In those scrolls are the Gospel of Thomas that consists of the the sayings Jesus. These scrolls pre-date the Gospels that are the present bible.
  11. The Canadian Public Policy Journal has suggested that there might be some good things that result from a combination of Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba. http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2006/08...1730742-cp.html What do people think? The Globe and Mail the other day liked the idea.
  12. So what is a Metis and an Ojibway who have children become?
  13. Most people don't know that Paul Martin Jr. has Metis heritage. Many people say that Chartrand won partly because Dumont is seen to be too close to the Conservatives and less a traditionalist than Chartrand. It was quite the battle.
  14. It is now being revealed that Canada was the one that lost a Canadian soldier in today's suicide bombing. http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/200...han-attack.html If Harper isn't worried, he should be. The increasing numbers of dead and NATO's own 4 month deadline will put the pressure on him for sure.
  15. The wind plant may sit on land that is in dispute but is is completely rediculous for anyone to claim that the equipment used in the wind plant belongs to anyone other than the investors that paid for the development.Stories like this demonstrate how the native land claim industry has gotten completely out of a control. We need politicians that will re-introduce some sanity into these discussions by making it clear that no matter what historical wrongs occurred the rights of innocent property owners will be protected by the gov't. We were told we'd be seeing more of this happening this year. The National Post today said the federal government can no longer dodge their responsibility of getting involved.
  16. I know all about the Metis. In many rural areas they still constitute a distinct society. In Winnipeg, even Metis agree, there is so much inter-marriage going on that many people are only vaguely aware they have Metis roots.
  17. They don't condone your relationship? In Canada, there are an estimated 300,000 to 700,000 Metis. *That* is a lot of intermarriage in our past. And it is still happening today. Urbanization is the melting pot. That has been happening for a long as humans have walked the earth.
  18. I have no problem with learning and healing from cultural touchstones. So many Natives though have intermarried and learned other languages that there is no one particular touchstone to go back to. Some become a culture unto themselves like the Metis. Even the Metis today are so integrated that their Metis roots have additonal touchstones of African and Asian cultures. It's a real potpourri out there. Many young people are simply calling themselves Canadian.
  19. What did the Conservatives do differently in the Mulroney era? How did Vic Toews do in his job in Manitoba? Is crime way down?
  20. Where has that been written?
  21. Resolution Accepted by Israel/Lebanon. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14258758/
  22. How do native communities keep the balance between respecting and learning from Elders and from not becoming a gerontocracy like some other cultures have found?
  23. It has been suggested by some that we all need some sort of connection with nature, the outdoors, whatever for our health. I'd be interested in knowing how Elders think of intermarriage and cross cultural lifestyles. It is one area that other people have had difficulty adjusting to but have found rewarding in the long run.
  24. I think I understand the first part but I'm not sure about the last part. What does that mean?
