Harper does indeed have the authority. If it is an insurrection, then the army can be called in and that is Harper's responsibility.

Caledonia problem didnt arise overnight

Hardly obscure. If you have studied religion, you would know that. The different translations of the bible have dramatically changed the meaning of the bible over the years as well. Why defend the bible at all? I have no interest in it at all except as a piece of literature. I frankly don't believe much in it all. -

And what would they do with 60 seats that they aren't doing now? Bush has only had to veto once. He has gotten everything he wanted except when members of his own party didn't want it such as his Supreme Court nominee. The Democrats have been no serious challenge for 6 years. It is the Iraq war going on another 2 or more years that is finally making 60% of the population say "enough."

I didn't make the point that they uncovered the plot.

Aboriginals/First Nations in Canada

Anybody can be a nation!!! The Metis are a nation!!! Quebec is a nation!!! Doesn't mean they are a country unless people recognize it as so!!! Does the U.N. recognize Six Nations as a country?! Does any country recognize Six Nations as a country?! -
I agree that they wouldn't call it Mantario. I can remember when Northwest Territories was calved offin to two territories, they asked the people of NWT if they wanted to continue with the old name or have a new name. A smart alec radio station lobbied for the name "Bob" and it finished second in polling to NWT.

Ah, sorry, maybe the article for Canadian Policy was referring to the municpality size rather than the city itself. I wondered about that but didn't look it up.

Traditionally, when a President's numbers are this low in his second term, he loses many seats in Congress. That's what's new.

They seem have lots of British willing to do it.

Not just the early days of the war. When Nixon ordered bombing, they were afraid to bomb too close to the border for fear China would pour across with soldiers and then it was game over. Even 400,000 soldiers couldn't hope to hold against a million unless nuclear weapons were deployed.

The sad state of our judicial/penal system
jdobbin replied to Hicksey's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It is bad policy and even the National Post and Western Standard say so. Anyone with any sense can't see why the absolute bald faced lie of "national security" is being used. There is no justification. None at all. Toews was Attorney General. His department dropped the ball repeatedly. It was cited as a reason why he was defeated in 1999. His department misspent money constantly for super trials. That was his responsibility. He was incompetent then, I can't imagine he is any better now. -
It was fear of China. If you read some of the recollections of the people back then, there was a fear that China would send massive amounts of soldiers across the border of the U.S. got anywhere near China's borders.

Most military and security experts say the world is not more secure and in fact is less secure. Many of the world's terrorists are being trained now in Pakistan, a U.S. ally. And this is where Osama bin Laden is supposed to be hiding.

The federal government is part of the negotiations. Harper could send in the army. Land claims are a federal responsibility.

The sad state of our judicial/penal system

Yes, Mulroney is much older now and presumably gave Harper the advice to invoke national security as a reason to direct contracts to provinces they wanted. What Toews did was very important as Attorney General because it is at the heart of his policies as Justice minister now. Toews wasted money on gang trials that were broken up into smaller trials by defence lawyers. Many of these guys faced reduced charges. Toews office was underfunded and inept and let a man who sex with a 12 year old girl serve his time in the community. A review found his department to be substandard. This is the man that is Justice minister now. Older and wiser, presumably. -
Perhaps that was the winning policy they should have tried in Vietnam.

Canadian Sovereignty and the Queen
jdobbin replied to Riverwind's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
At the time of the Constitution, support for the monarchy was at an all time high because of marriage of Charles and Diana in 1981. You can check if you like. Trudeau often said he wanted a republic but couldn't get support for it from any party except the Parti Quebecois. -
Since I don't see Alberta leaving in the next say...2 years, I think that even an Alberta separatist might see the benefits of Northwestern Ontario becoming part of Manitoba. In one stroke, Thunder Bay would become the second largest city in the new province and Kenora would be the third largest and would gain much influence in the new Legislature presently dominated by Winnipeg. It is predicted that equalization will probably go down which is good for all Canadians.

Some of the biggest fights I have seen have been between Native groups over the issue of religion. Even here, it is possible that it could end in a fight between people who are normally of the same position on issues. -
That's because 36% of the population of Lebanon is Christian and some of them have been hurt by the war. On some Christian radio stations, they are saying the war is a sign of the second coming.

The shocking thing is that over 80% of Muslims in Britiain consider themselves Muslims first and British citizens second. Most Muslim nations except for Pakistan have completely opposite numbers. In other words, there might not be as many moderate Muslims in Britain as first thought.

Reagan pulled out of Lebanon. Nixon pulled out of Vietnam. The NATO General in charge has given a timetable of four months. At what point do you decide that you might not be able to achieve your goals in a place? Should either U.S. President I've mentioned kept troops in Lebanon and Vietnam? Should U.S. troops remained there today?

The Canadian Public Policy paper addresses that in much more detail than I can. They said the poorest prospect for the region was to become its own province. The second worst scenario was to remain as they are with supports being what they are coming from Toronto. And much of the support for this initiative comes from Northwest Ontario itself.
