You quoted me out of context. I was clearly referring to Muslim Canadian women. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/baraah-zahran/is-hijab-an-obstacle-_b_9355880.html

First - I do not agree that you can judge one's political beliefs based on their clothing. Second - I reject the notion that Muslim Canadian women feel that they must wear head coverings. I bet that most women freely choose to wear the hijab - some probably wear it to piss off their parents, some probably wear it only on special occasions.

The same way that we identify "good people" from "bad people".

Who cares? I have bigger things to worry about. For example: actual trains that go off the rails.

Vimy Ridge Battle 100th Anniversary Today

Honest question: does it matter that the commander was Julian Byng a British Army Officer? -
I also dislike Islamism (aka Political Islam or Islamic fundamentalism). Definition: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism I strongly disprove of the way that Iran, Saudi Arabia and other similar countries are governed. Not every Muslim is an Islamist. In fact, I am confident that the clear majority of Muslim-Canadians are not Islamist. Sticking with your analogy, people emigrating to Canada from Islamist countries should be welcomed in similar ways as people emigrating from Communist/Fascist countries in the past. We should not judge individuals by their religion and for most Muslim-Canadians Islam is just that – a religion.
-
Where in Europe is this happening?
-
I don't agree, but even if you are right, why should I care?
-
If you are correct, the percentage of Muslim Canadians will be about the same as the current percentage of Muslim Canadians living in Toronto. So what?
-
What will be the cause of our impending doom?
-
Peaceful is relatively easy to measure. You are clearly wrong here: -Canada is one of the most peaceful countries in the world (low crime rate) -Canada crime rate has been steadily decreasing and is at ~ 40 year low -Toronto has an extremely low crime rate and a very high percentage of immigrants. Same goes for Monreal, Vancouver and other major centers. - Asians (by far the largest group of immigrants) are under-represented in our prisons You are wrong about tolerance too: Your pew studies confirm that Canadian Muslims are very tolerant of Canadian values. The only thing that they have trouble tolerating is our cold winter!
-
Hmmm.... How did immigration lead to Islam lead to terrorism? Just because you think that its's a problem doesn't mean that it actually is. Immigration poses no threat to our peaceful and tolerant society.
-
I did. My argument is that your concerns are invalid.

It is you that has turned silly. Seriously, if the goal was to prevent deaths worldwide a good starting list would be: Given the budget restraints, they found 16 investments worthy of investment (in descending order of desirability):[3] Bundled micronutrient interventions to fight hunger and improve education Expanding the Subsidy for Malaria Combination Treatment Expanded Childhood Immunization Coverage Deworming of Schoolchildren, to improve educational and health outcomes Expanding Tuberculosis Treatment R&D to Increase Yield Enhancements, to decrease hunger, fight biodiversity destruction, and lessen the effects of climate change Investing in Effective Early Warning Systems to protect populations against natural disaster Strengthening Surgical Capacity Hepatitis B Immunization Using Low‐Cost Drugs in the case of Acute Heart Attacks in poorer nations (these are already available in developed countries) Salt Reduction Campaign to reduce chronic disease Geo‐Engineering R&D into the feasibility of solar radiation management Conditional Cash Transfers for School Attendance Accelerated HIV Vaccine R&D Extended Field Trial of Information Campaigns on the Benefits From Schooling Borehole and Public Hand Pump Intervention ttp://www.copenhagenconsensus.com/how-much-have-global-problems-cost-world/outcome Here in Canada, an issue that I think needs more attention is metal health. This can save lives through reduced violence, suicide and also improve quality of life.
-
The point is that there is no "problem".
-
Yes, within reason. http://thinkbynumbers.org/government-spending/false-sense-of-insecurity/
-
You are right, every preventable death is tragic. But, in your example, I would not expect the world to start focusing on teaspoon violence. We have limited ressources, why should we spend a disproportionate amount on Islamic terrorism compared to traffic accidents, gun violence. The silliness is in those that over-inflate the significance of Islamic terrorism,
-
I think that the most significant root cause of most people's fear of Islamic terrorism is our inability to comprehend large numbers and to put them into perspective. -There are 1,600,000,000 Muslims in the world - counting this high at a rate of 1/second would take 50 years! -There are an estimated 106,000 Islamic terrorists in the world (http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/26/opinion/bergen-schneider-how-many-jihadists/) -99.99 % of Muslims are not terrorists. Let's say CNN mis-counted and there actually 1,000,000 Islamic terrorists, then still 99.9 % of Muslims are not. -In 2015, 28,328 people died due to terrorism worldwide (including 6,924 perpetrators) (http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/susan-jones/11774-number-terror-attacks-worldwide-dropped-13-2015) -There were ~58,000,000 totals deaths, giving a rate of 0.5 terrorist deaths per 1000 deaths -There were 1.25 million road traffic deaths globally in 2013 (http://www.who.int/gho/road_safety/mortality/en/), giving a rate of 22 deaths/1000 - 44 times greater than terrorist deaths -In the US, you are WAY more likely to die from gun violence compared to terrorism 120 times more likely if you include 9/11/2001. Since 9/11 for every terrorism death there are over 1,000 gun violence deaths. (http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/02/us/oregon-shooting-terrorism-gun-violence/) Let's put more effort into preventing the top killers! Top Killers (http://www.livescience.com/3780-odds-dying.html) The first eight diseases listed in the table below were the top eight killers in the United States in 2014, whereas the rest are shown for comparison purposes. Cause of death Number of U.S. deaths Rate of deaths 1. Cardiovascular disease 614,348 193 per 100,000 2. Cancer 591,699 186 per 100,000 3. Chronic lower respiratory disease 147,101 46 per 100,000 4. Accidents 136,053 43 per 100,000 5. Strokes 133,103 42 per 100,000 6. Alzheimer's disease 93,541 29 per 100,000 7. Diabetes 76,488 24 per 100,000 8. Influenza and pneumonia 55,227 17 per 100,000 Drug overdoses 47,055 15 per 100,000 Kidney disease 48,146 15 per 100,000 Intentional self-harm 42,773 13 per 100,000 Septicemia 38,940 12 per 100,000 Liver disease 38,170 12 per 100,000 Transportation accidents 37,195 12 per 100,000 Parkinson's disease 26,150 8 per 100,000 Firearm assault 10,945 3 per 100,000 HIV 6,721 2 per 100,000 Pedestrian deaths 6,258 2 per 100,000

If Muslims all believed the same thing they would not be fighting each other...
-
1,000,000,000 people have the same beliefs?
-
Immigration policies are probably the biggest political differences between Europe and Canada - with the Canadian model very much admired. I am more or less supporting the staus quo
-
We were talking about your hyperbole of "hundreds of thousands of people per year with medieval social views" entering Canada. I say social views in the Muslim world are decades behind the West - but OK lets move on to today. Muslims in Canada are very diverse: " the community is large and diverse with well over 60 ethno-cultural groups." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_Canada and includes Liberal groups and progressive individuals like: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarek_Fatah What "Muslim demands" are you so afraid of?
-
Do I really need to answer this? Just do a body count... Violence against women was different but similarly prevalent and severe. FGM is not a prevailing Muslim prevailing cultural value. Some conservative values are growing in Canadian Muslims - but no significant conservative practices.
-
I argue that today's misogyny, homophobia and antisemitism in the Muslim world is comparable to the West in the last century. In neither was/is it a prevalent cultural value but it certainly exists in an unacceptable degree. In the West: -Gay bashing was common -Gays were jailed -Violence against women was different but as bad -Antisemitism was often worse and treatment of other minorities too Yes, the "Muslim world" is decades behind. However most individual Muslims fit right in with western values - in fact about one million Canadian Muslims do.
