Will lower crime rate hurt Conservatives?
blueblood replied to capricorn's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The American's have just opened up 10 million acres of land to be used for production. The price of corn has also dropped three dollars a bushell. I'll bet you the price of tortilla chips is still where it was a month ago. Saying ethanol jacks up food prices is a hoax. High transport costs are to blame. The Americans are in an energy crisis and need all the energy they can get. If we produce a paltry 5% ethanol, that's more oil going to them. -

What's to be afraid of concerning GMO's, they cured blindness in Asian kids??? Crops grow better and produce more??? They're easier to grow??? I think Greenpeace must be the largest and most powerful lobbyist group over there. GMO's, seals, what's next? Then there is the Europeans and their completely lazy attitude towards Afghanistan. If I were Harper I'd be furious and would tossing about sanctioning their economy. Lets say freezing durum exports to Italy for starters. -
Ontario is also hurting under a tory federal gov't. This is why Obama has such a huge chance of winning in the US. Under the Liberals it was good time charlie in Ontario, now its not. Of course that is not the actions of the federal gov't that cause economic downturns, but explain that to the average voter who thinks, I had it better under the Libs, I'll vote for them. Like I said it's a gamble, Dion has went all in with a straight, he hopes Harper doesn't have the flush.

Point 1 taken. However, was Mississippi taken to the UN human rights tribunal? Point 2, yet Quebec is even a have not province today taking billions of dollars from Ont, SK, NFLD, and Alberta. Sure it's nice to have a large GDP, but when the rest of the country bankrolls it there are some problems. -

European's are about the worst trading partners we have. They are screwing us around with GMO's, and now with this. There is a much better trading partner down south and in Asia. There are other places we can trade with, and we would not lose out taking trade action against the EU. -
If the green shift sells to Ontario voters, which it most likely is doing, then it does look like bye bye Steve. This is a huge gamble for the Liberals, Ontario voters have re-elected a premier who likes to tax the dickens out of businesses, this plan definetely is something I think urban voters would go for. I might not like it or agree with it, but that's probably what's going to happen.

Welcome to how what happens when you win. Winners set the terms and the losers abide by them or leave. That's what happens in a war and in democracy. Remember there was no Geneva convention in the 1700's the Brits could have just as easily massacred them, but in seeing that was wrong they let them live like they used to. What do we get in return, an economic backwater with a racist government that can't get over that they got taken to the woodshed in the 1700's. I was referring to Quebec's abysmal economic state is compared to Mississippi, but I'll agree that their language laws are on par with the civil rights of Mississippi during the 60's. And your defending the people who elect these pathetic lawmakers, that's like defending the bigoted southerners in the 60's from the blue states calling them backward hillbillies. -

The grass is greener, Saskatchewan is a have province and Manitoba is a have not. SK has resources and so does MB. Welcome to how the NDP runs things. -

What they are competitive with SK, cheaper than BC, and cheaper than Toronto. Seems pretty good to me. Then there is the ridiculous pay they get. People are still flocking to Alberta. Oil will hit the floor at 100 bucks in the wintertime, when the world economy fixes itself oil will rise again. Alberta does diversify, they have a very profitable agriculture sector now. They also have around 60 yrs. of oil left. That is plenty of time to diversify. -

My point was a large portion of Quebecers wanted out, whether its 49% or 30-35% is IMO arbitrary. My beef is the Frenchies were soundly defeated, were fortunate enough to get the deal they did, and that's still not good enough for the seperatists. It's that attitude why bill 101 exists and why they piss away dollars and dollars on culture instead of getting their economy in order. Good grief they are around where Mississippi is. In Manitoba, there are lots of French communities, they cause no problems at all, and everyone in Manitoba knows where they stand. If I go to a French town for parts, it's up to me to be able to communicate with them, same goes if a French man comes to an english speaking town for parts. -

The lefties like to harass Klien about demolishing a hospital in the early 90's when the economy was in the tank. Your comparison is askew; Here's a better one, an Albertan and Quebecer are destined to win the lottery, as you said the Albertan wins 5.2 mil and the Quebecer won 50 large. If they are both predetermined to win, why doesn't the quebecer go to where the winnings are going to be larger? On a different note, Albertan politicians have maximized the use of Alberta's resources which are oil and agriculture, Alberta is doing very well and it's citizens are living very comfortable lives. Quebec politicians have squandered their resources which are Hydro electricity, shipping, iron ore, and manufacturing. How can a province that is 400 years old, with such a large head start, and large resources which are high in demand themselves be second fiddle to a province that is 100 years old and only a select few resources??? -

The last referendum results say that 49% of Quebecers don't believe they are Canadians. Also there has not been public outcry in QC to take these laws away, which means that they are de facto supporting it. Keep defending the supporters of anti human rights. The school yard bully attitude belongs in the 21st century more than ever. It is how Canadian troops in Afghanistan are taking out terrorists and helping to support the democratic gov't. It's how the Americans are dealing with affairs in Iraq. Quite simple might makes right. To say otherwise is pure dillusional. IT was because the allies were the bigger bully than germany is how WWII was won. Would you rather the brits have loaded up the quebecers on boats and shipped them off somewhere, they did it once in Acadia. Canada was formed when the brits took the Frenchies to the woodshed on the Plains of Abraham and through their benevolence allowed the quebecers not only to stay, but let them live like they did before. Sounds like a sweet deal for someone who got their ass handed to them. -

Tell that to the NDP and the residents of winnipeg that there is a province outside of winnipeg. This province is doing well in spite of the NDP, Saskatchewan bought into that and tossed Calvert on his ass. The province isn't doing that well, just cross the border into Saskatchewan-> that's a province that is doing well, manitoba has lots of ground to make up. -

The air in Alberta is still much cleaner than the air in Southern Ontario. Canadians do not want to live a crappier life just for the sake of the environment. What you propose is called getting caught with our pants down. It happened with the crow rate, it would be smart not to repeat that mistake. Alberta's free ride is keeping the TSX over 13,000 points whereas the NYSE is just over 11,000. Alberta's free ride is also whats bankrolling all those social programs you hold so dear. -

I'd say so, Ralph Klien blew up the hospital and said it was for the good of the province. Turns out he was right. That smart owner knew what was making the economy tick and cashed in on it. Look at the ordinary person in Alberta compared to the ordinary person in Quebec and you tell me who is better off. Your question is very vague. -
nope, I have to agree with you there. The gas stations need to make their money after losing a bunch recently. Lots closed up shop in the U.S.

That is surprising about the NDP, but their actions are cannon fodder for Liberal and Tories. Struthers and Wowchuck are history. Wouldn't surprise me if the Tories lost Wpg. South and their other Wpg. riding. They won South by only 11 votes. -

Saskatchewan experienced even greater growth and their NDP got scattered the four winds. Winnipeg people are quite happy with the NDP because they are left leaning, even though most of the economic growth is in western Manitoba. In my honest opinion, it doesn't make sense to have a provincial government in Manitoba, the population is too concentrated. More power should be given to Winnipeg city hall, instead of having the legislature as City Hall No. 2. -

Alberta had to have sliding scale royalties in the 90's so oil companies would invest there in the first place. Look at what happened because of it, Alberta is one of the richest areas in the world and Canada is in good shape to survive the worldwide economic slowdown. Lumping Alberta oil companies in with Bombardier is like comparing apples to oranges. -
according to the Western Producer, oil is expected to hover around the 100 dollar a barell mark in the near future due to a slowdown in the worldwide economy. The bubble is about to burst.

The conservatives a threat to individual liberties? The ones who gave first nations the vote, introduced the bill of rights, and settled the residential schools issue? You seem to take your liberties for granted. The conservatives also support the freedom of mobility, that means if this place sucks so bad you can leave and not have to worry about getting tossed in jail for it. In 30 yrs there's going to be the same fight for coke prohibition. -

The PCs in MB didn't have a prayer of winning that election. Doer like you said is one of the most popular political leaders in the country. Winnipeg is also one of the most left leaning areas in the country, along with the north. Not only that the NDP redefined the election boundaries creating a "fortress winnipeg" according to the PCs. Expect the Liberals to nab some seats in Winnipeg over the ridiculous anti business attitude of the NDP as of late. -

Your defending the people that support that bill, when they elected politicians that put it in. Funny they seem to attack the US for being a totalitarian state when in Quebec they don't have nearly the same degree of freedom of expression as the americans do. What's to deal with, my side won. Tell that to Duceppe and the BQ and PQ. -

Yes it is 2008, we have many freedoms including the freedom of mobility. I like it in Canada, and I have the right to stay here. The Quebecers get the same rights, if living in one of the best countries in the world isn't good enough for them, I'm not forcing them to stay, they can hop on a plane and emmigrate without fear of being jailed. And speaking of 2008, there is that little matter of bill 101 to take care of. Telling me its 2008 and defending that kind of nonsense is flat out hypocrisy. In the 1700s the brits won, deal with it. -

Im happy living here, I don't have the desire to leave, unlike some in Quebec. We won that war and they lost. It was the TSN turning point in Canadian history. If the Frenchies won, we'd be playing by their rules. I don't refer to Quebec Separatists as fellow Canadians, they are traitors and if they don't like Canada they can hop on a plane and leave.
