Alberta Political Corruption

Climate scientists keep getting it wrong
TheNewTeddy replied to jacee's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
This is a waste of time. We argue about what's causing extreme weather without planning for it. It's like arguing whether it's raining because of the nearby factories or not, all the while standing out in the rain getting wet. -
I'm going to compiling evidence for a new post explaining how the French language and NAZI ideology have something in common. ...well okay that's a very loose description of what it will be about, but I think the "hook" has been made.
-
You could make an argument for Quebec, and, one for the Atlantic even, but I'd like to see your argument for Alberta, in particular, voting to abolish the Senate.
-
Abolition would never pass a refendum. Quebec has a locked-in share of seats, and would vote no. The west has hoped for more sears, and would vote no. The atlantic has over-representation and would vote no. So your referendum gets 60% or more in Ontario, and then what?

The problem with Quebec Sovereignty is the way the Federal Government reacts to it.

This is generally a good idea, but more needs to be done to prevent vigilante "justice" -
Well, overall I did enjoy my trip to Montreal. I think walking around with a guy who refused to even try French did not help my case much. We took transit everywhere (we are transit fans, like rail fans but for public transit) so our view is skewed by the quality of transit. West Island in particular had poor transit, and it's main bus terminal was jam packed so full of grafitti that there was no place for any more The whole thing just struck me as though there was no pride within parts of the city.
-
Hum, thank you, both points are excellent and helpful. I think Charest would probably go even if he were LoO federally. And the partition debate would be a more serious one than I had accounted for originally.

A note to the admins and mods This forum is more formal and serious than I am used to, and a thread like this one, does not tend to fit well. If you feel that this thread does not fit with the Federal Politics subforum, feel free to move it elsewhere. If you also feel that this thread does not fit with MLW in general, feel free to delete it; I'd just ask you PM me to let me know so I don't go hunting for a non-existant thread. For everyone: I'm quite keen on working on various alternate history stories regarding politics in Canada. For example: What if OUI had won the 1995 Referendum? This can branch into dozens of stories depending on how people react. Would Chretien resign? Would Parizeau go for a UDI? If there was a UDI how would Canada react? Each can branch off to it's own story. There are, however, "smaller" stories with fewer threads that can come up. What if Paul Martin was Liberal leader in the 2000 election? What if Joe Clark was not PC leader in 2000, because he did not run in 1998? What if the "PC Bounce" in the polls prior to the 1997 election held, and the PC Party won dozens of additional seats? For the latter, I already have some maps ready Quebec: http://twitter.com/TheNewTeddy/status/244599019047895041/photo/1/large I calculate this by using real world results and upping or lowering the popular vote in particular provinces. If the PC Party had taken about a third of the vote in Quebec in 1997, these are the seats they would have won. Approximately of course. Anyway, the "problem" comes when I run into a scenario thread where I'm not certain what would have happened and I desire some feedback. This is the case in my 1997 PC Bounce. So Charest is invited to go lead the PLQ but... Would he? I mean, he's the Leader of the Opposition now? And if he does not, who comes PLQ leader, and could they win in 2003? So maybe he does go. Who becomes PC leader? Clark would probably run, but Harper wanted to run in 1998 for PC leader, but did not, in part, because of Reform. With Reform behind the PC Party would he have run? Could he have won? If you do have any feedback, please feel free to share. I'm also open to discussing other alternate history scenarios. A full list of the ones I'm working on are here: http://ridingbyriding.wikia.com/wiki/Alternate_History Note - I've PMed some people, in particular people with views and from places that I think would make for valuable feedback - and welcome anything you have to say about these or any other alternate history scenarios.

Given the movement towards change I've started reporting spam again, but, if there are 3 posts in a row, I just report one of them, which I hope is fine.

Kinsella is an idiot borderline lunatic. I don't believe anything he says. As for LeBlanc, I've met him, and he's the archetype for a below-average-but-dedicated MP who would make terrible leader.

Quebec is a province like any other. Sure it "stands out" in some unique ways, but so does BC and Newfoundland.

This is correct and accurate.

I was in, what I learned now was the hochelaga-maissoneuve-mercier area and my friend and I could not find anyone willing or able to speak to us in English. In West Island we could not find anyone willing to even look at us, everyone had their head down, and there was so much graffiti everywhere that we were shocked. In Downtown we had people purposfully take our orders for food improperly because my friend refused to even try french and mine is god awful Oddly, the only place where we found many friendly folks was in the Ahunstic-Outremont type area. Our experiences in Laval and Longiueil were limited but we found the former to be somewhat similar to Gatineau, and the latter to be Quebec's answer to Mississauga.

TheNewTeddy replied to Tilter's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
How the hell do people NOT know? It was all over the news. No offence, but the only way to not know is to be willfully blind - IE, see a anti-union story and read it, but see a transit story and not read it, because you are anti-union. -

On June 3, 1971 Bill Davis announced the cancellation of the Spadina Expressway in Toronto. Those who have ever had to use this stub highway know what a mistake that was. On that day Ontario started it's long decline. Not only did highway construction come to a near standstill, but they decided this was a great time to stop building new transit (our public transit network looks all too similar right now as it did on this date). Other changes were made as well to the way Ontario was governed. We were better off 4 years ago? Yes, as we were 8, and 12, and 16 years. We were better off in 1971 than we are today, and no one party is to blame for that, the entire government of Ontario from that time on is. -
Are all quebecors and francophone racist?
TheNewTeddy replied to PIK's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
In this case, "distinct nationhood" has replaced "race", but means the exact same thing. It is these reasons why I like ON and QS. I am thankful I saw none of this, and, proud that I stood against it. What I want is an acceptance that many PQ policies are seen as racist by Anglophones, and, more importantly, that Anglophones have a good reason to see it that way. So far, the reaction from the French media is that Anglophones who think the PQ and their policies are racist are the cause of the shooting because they are so wrong and should shut up and talk french. -
You'll have a hard time finding an Acadian who does not know English. You might claim to find some in far north NB but these Acadians tend to have Quebecois last names strangely enough. Acadians have managed to learn and use English when it benefits them, and yet, live in French. Acadian culture is stronger now than it was 100 years ago, despite all the English.

I might not agree with this post above, but I like that we have a new poster who makes quality arguments in debate, so kudos for that! -
We even added to the culture of other lands like Louisiana!
