The Magnanimity of Sudanese Islamic Courts
-TSS- replied to cybercoma's topic in The Rest of the World
One work-mate of mine bought himself a wife from Egypt. Well, not in the strict sense bought but practically yes. Obviously he had to convert to islam too but that was no problem for him. He's always been a bit of a nutter. -

I'm not being cynical here but all too often "the persecuted Christians" after they have been allowed to settle into a western country all of a sudden they become muslims again. -
The future wars will be about fresh water. You in Canada have a lot of that. Thankfully so does your giant neighbour, so they're unlikely to invade you under some flimsy excuse.
-
The "if you can't beat join them"-argument doesn't really apply Israel and its relation to the neighbours. If the neighbours only could they would have wiped Israel out a long time ago. So who is beating whom?

Perhaps the U.S. Should Not Have Invaded Muslim Countries
-TSS- replied to jbg's topic in The Rest of the World
Apart from the obvious reason of oil, I think one reason for Bush*s decision to invade Iraq was a personal one as his father didn't overthrow Saddam's regime and so it happened that Saddam outlasted Bush senior. As for overthrowing Gaddafi Europe is now feeling the consequences as there was some hidden deal with Gaddafi that he wouldn't let thousands of illegal immigrants try to cross the Mediterranean for Europe. No such deal with the new regime and the people in Italy really feel that every day but some people in powerful paces want Europe to be inundated with illegal immigration from Africa because it is sheer nonsense that it couldn't be stopped. -
Today is the day of the illegal referendum in East-Ukraine.

Does anyone here think this man should go to jail?
-TSS- replied to a topic in The Rest of the World
If a 42-year old person is silly enough to post such messages to the social media that alone should be an alleviating circumstance because a person that old doing that is obviously not at the level of his physical age. -

It seems to me that whenever this topic is raised people seem to have way too exaggerated views of the importance of the North-Sea oil. Even if Scotland could have all of the revenue generated from it, it wouldn't be enough to make their economy sustainable. -

There could not possible be a binding promise by a supra-national organisation like NATO not to expand eastwards. It is sheer nonsense to claim that could be possible. Therefore the Russians have shown their true colours once again in this propaganda-war.

Execution Botched By Heart Attack
-TSS- replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
As a European there must be some in-built sentiment in me against capital punishment but I do realise the arguments of the proponents do make sense too. If you take someone like Timothy McVeigh, does anyone really honestly think he didn't deserve to die because of his atrocious crime? -
We've already learned to take all news-stories from Russian sources with a pinch of salt and rightly so too. What many of us have yet to learn is to do likewise with news from western sources as well.

The commentary-section of the link you posted is priceless. Some North-American hippie accusing Europeans of racism. Ooh, the delicious irony!

Death Stalks Muslims in Myanmar - Where's the Outrage?
-TSS- replied to jbg's topic in The Rest of the World
Indeed 44 of them all most of which most people in the west know little or nothing about. All the more question why is the Palestine-conflict so important that we all must have an opinion on it? -
I honestly don't give a flying f*** about Palestine. In contrast I am very worried about this Ukraine crisis because there is no way of telling how it could escalate.

Agreed that the Dutch have their own judicial system. Yet at the same time in this very sub-section of this forum we have a thread about the Egyptian government sentencing over 600 people to death. Most of the comments are expressing outrage and none whatsoever are saying how Egypt has its own laws. Double standards at work, anyone?

My bad!

Note the tense; he wanted. He is dead now because he was murdered by these "better people".

Indeed, many people in countries such as Canada or Finland which have vast sweet water-reserves don't realize what a treasure they have. Could be a reason for wars in the future. Sometimes on a hot summer day when you see somebody washing his car by hosing sweet water on it, it makes you think that in some countries you would probably go to jail for such a misuse of water.

As flying is a complete no-no for me because of fear of flying the only place in the world that I really regret that I'm never gonna see is Australia. I doubt it very much that there's gonna be inventions during my lifetime that going by boat to Australia would last any tolerable amount of time.

12 years ago in the middle of an election-campaign in the Netherlands the party-leader of a new party was murdered. Pim Fortuyn was known for his anti-islam rhetoric. He was murdered by a human excrement whose name doesn't deserve a mention. That murderer got 18 years of sentence but now after 12 years he is being released. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-27261291 I know that this must have something to do with 12/18=2/3 but it still begs the question why. He is released on condition that he may not leave the country and he may not enter the cities of the Hague and Rotterdam where Fortuyn was very active because there may be people who don't like him very much. And yes, he has to wear an electronic tag on him at all times. Yet still, could you imagine on your side of the pond that anyone could get away with premeditated murder so lightly? 12 years for a murder, especially for political motives, is light. This news comes handily at the same time when the Dutch media are doing their best to demonise another politician Geert Wilders who also is very critical of muslim-immigration.
