It included Quebec to the effect that it included all of Canada... okay then can you explain why we are still talking about the Constitution today???
-
Whether or not it is true (I believe, for the record, that it is) we are not meant to know so what???

Poll shows Conservatives within margin of error
tml12 replied to geoffrey's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Call it what you will, but this is definitely bad news for the Liberals. If they stick with the scary, scary, scary rhetoric they are going to have a tough go of it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I agree the Liberals need to use some fresh rhetoric...but apparently as long as Gomery is out of the news they have an easy minority...which is bad news for the Conservatives, who cannot run on scandal alone... -
Real reason there won't be a Xmas election?

Don't you hate those lefties like Tommy Douglas who got health care for all of us... And those who try to protect us are just as bad, aren't they..... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Seriously err, are you comparing Tommy Douglas to Jack Layton? -
Aren't those states solidly democrat as it is? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> NJ yes but I always thought Virginia was conservative...

<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Layton is sitting on a fence screaming "Canadians love me and my royal socialist ass is so safe up here." Meanwhile, he is DYING for a deal because he knows, short of forming an NDP government, the best chance he has of pushing his left-wing agenda is to keep the Liberals in a minority government. -
This is Tuesday. Layton has a week to show whether he's angling, or just a flake - or if he's serious. I still think Layton's angling in a flaky manner, but I'm biased.Martin (or rather Tim Murphy) is seeking a deal - so we'll see Layton's mettle in the next few days. Harper was burned in the spring but this current approach shows that he is learning how to apply principle to tactics. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I agree with you August about Harper. Layton is rubbing his ass on the fence (pardon the crudeness of that but it's true). Don't tell me Layton is not trying to get a deal out of the Liberals. Short of actually forming the government, a Liberal minority is the best thing for the NDP>

<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Shoop, First I did not begin this thread as a "Liberal love in." What it shows is that Harper is unable to hold a lead after Gomery. Already the report is out just a week and the Liberals are back up near where they were prior to November 1. Why? Second, I agree with you that the Constitution of 1982 should have included Quebec. While Levesque misunderstood the role of the Quebec veto, Trudeau was hellbent on getting the Constitution passed for his career and his legacy. It is hard not to find both men at fault. Third, while I am not ready to call Mulrooney the greates, I will agree that he did some fantastic things as PM (as well as some bad ones), but overall he should be remembered for his achievements.

U.S. Democrats won 2 out of 2 races for governor in New Jersey and Virginia (!!!) What does this say for Americans and their current opinions on Bush's government?

That is such bull. You know, I am beginning to wonder if our justice system can be saved. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The health folks are proactive though. THe Canadian Public Health Association is sending facts about HIV and HIV safety in the workplace, info is going out to all 9 CFL clubs. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> At least they are doing something...

Is the separation of Quebec becoming inevitable?
tml12 replied to fellowtraveller's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The simple and direct answer is "yes", although I still believe that negotiations will lead to some kind of autonomous status. The history of Ireland and the history of the pre-Civil War US are instructive. A country rarely changes quickly. In hindsight, it should have been obvious that it would take time to change Quebec's status in Canada, including the possibility of outright independence. The Irish now have a higher standard of living than the British. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> August, Are you THAT confident of sovereignty being inevitable? I mean, I don't know what part of Montreal you're in but there are a lot of people around where I am that say that a yes vote would still be difficult and I agree. I mean to say that it MAY happen is one thing but certainly that it will, I think, is still one big IF. -
Excellent job, well done, even though that is just my opinion. Sadly, too many parents use (or let) the television or computer to 'babysit' (and also basically raise, instill a sense of morals and justice, and program information to be regarded as 'gospel truth'). <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, But that is what our society has become. It is true, fleabag, what you say, but to change what we do here today would mean that we would have to change the attitudes of most of the citizens in this nation.

Shoop, It is called being Canada's Natural Governing Party. As L. Ian Macdonald noted in the Gazette today, the Liberals have been in power in the twentieth century "about as long as the Communists in the USSR." -
Looks like we're going to the polls.

Well, them's the facts. He is certainly not trusted by his Opposition 'partners', and for good reason. It's his call. Layton has a lot at stake now. If he ends up dealing with Martin now and supporting the government - as he so very desperately wants to do- it will cost him in the April election. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't think so. Layton WANTS to make a deal with Martin because he knows that is the best, perhaps only, way to get anything close to what the left-wing NDP wants done. -
It's a bad idea to dry clean a suit too often, as too frequent dry cleaning can damage the fabric. This is especially true with wool. If you wear the same suit very frequently, just have it pressed. Or consider buying more than one suit. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Just, for the record, are we talking about politicians here or everyone? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You mean politicians have a different way to dress more beautiful from everyone else Perhaps they have more disposable income than an average guy <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Why would I think that?

So then the best possible outcome here for the CPC would be if the Bloc were to table the confidence motion. That way, the public wouldn't be mad at Harper for calling a Christmas election, and Layton would have to follow up on his word or else risk losing voter confidence, and with the reported atmosphere in Quebec right now, Duceppe could take a train trip throughout Quebec, giving them all the finger, and still win hands down. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That is a good possibility. -
You have to have a Green Card for 5 years before you can apply for US citizenship. Green Cards can come through work, family, investment, as a refugee or through the lottery. Most people do not get it through the lottery. Green Cards are divied out based on country of origin. Citizens of Canada have the second highest allotment behind Ireland (the Irish can thank Ted Kennedy for that) and receive something like 7% of all Green Cards issued. Because some countries get more allocated than others, they are not included in the lottery, i.e. Canada. However, every decade or so, Canada is included in the lottery. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Right, But to apply through work you need to have been offered a job that an American can't do (like we have here), not everyone has family, investment means you need lots of $$$$ thousands of dollars, refugee is straightforward (Canadians usually wouldn't be admissible here), so while most people may not get them through the lottery, that is how Canadians would get them (unless they had thousands of dollars or a big job like MD or something like that).

That is why so many federalists vote for the PQ, even anglophones, but no at referendum. -

Good of him to apologize, but why wasn't it a public apology, especially after he went public with his lies? And probably the funniest thing I've read all week, courtesy of the Liberal Party website: <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't think it's that actually believe that he knew but believe that he should have known. -
I'll give you that.

Not only a disgrace, he is free on $10,000 bail and ordered to practice safe sex. He was also ordered not be alone with any female under the age of 14 - why is this so <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That is such bull. You know, I am beginning to wonder if our justice system can be saved.
