Ontario Liberal supporters explained

I agree it would be harder to pin the right-wing card on McKay. BTW: If Liberals win minority and Harper and Martin get dumped, am I the only one who would *LOVE* to see Belinda vs. McKay? -
Harper won't siften marijuana possession laws
tml12 replied to normanchateau's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
How is marijuana a moral issue? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It isn't, but I'm with Harper on this one, I've seen first hand what pot can lead to. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Have you seen what a needless criminal record WILL do to a person? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> When I was a teen, I went through my "phase" and most certainly I have seen what pot can do, but I have also seen otherwise law-abiding honour students get in trouble for just wanting to smoke here and there. Pot IS a gateway drug for some, others no. I think decriminalization is not the worst thing...and certainly we give pot to people with cancer and neurological disorders like MS. I think decriminalization makes sense. -
With a population their size and strict immigration laws, I can understand it. And totally agree saving Christmas is important...

This might be a rather awkward post but I have been wondering for awhile...is national representation all its cracked up to be? Since the Bloc's formation in 1990 after successive Mulrooney's debacles, the Liberal Party has campaigned that, aside from being the Natural Governing Party, they are the only party who can TRULY govern a national Canada because they have always had MPs from every province. Here in Quebec, one of the big strategies the Liberals seem to be throwing out now is that if the Conservatives win without seats in Quebec, sovereignty will be able to be used more effectively by the Bloc (Quebec would not be represented in the Government of Canada). But with Kilgour's dumping the Party and Landslide Annie poised to lose, couldn't the Conservatives use that argument for Canada's other agitated province? Or is this all crazy? Do you think national representation is all it is cracked up to be?

Am I the only one who wants Landslide Annie out of Parliament? I met a guy in a bar a few nights back who said she is the worst MP ever and he hopes she never runs again. -
Canada a bigger terrorist threat than Mexico...
tml12 replied to Montgomery Burns's topic in Canada / United States Relations
actually its both are faults. Canda's borde security is a joke and you know it. And in certain places so is the United States. Id hate to see a 2000 mile long fence seperating canda and the US, with armed guards patrolling it. Very Soviet Unionish if you ask me. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I wouldn't say Canada border guards are a joke at all...I think they do their job well. My problem is that CSIS is terribly run, CBC talks about how all cultures 100% equal and the U.S. is big and mean, and successive Liberal government emphasize protectionism instead of working with the U.S. on many issues. -

Good video Burns. While I do not agree with everything in it, I think it is generally correct. Immigration laws are lax in this country...hell, in Quebec it is easier to immigrate if you are from a French-speaking Arab country than if you are from Ireland or the states... Now guess what city is a terrorist threat? I think it is about time to wake up and realize there are al-Qaeda cells across this country, as well as in the States. We need to wake up and give out law enforcement agencies more power. -

Trusted them so much they wouldn't vote for them. The party was walking dead, on the verge of bankruptcy, without ideas or support. If it hadn't merged with the Alliance when it did it would have been destroyed in the last election. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Argus is generally correct, though I can sympathize with normanchateau's points. -
Good point Curt!

Before Cadman took the riding for Reform/Alliance, it was a NDP seat. In 2004, the NDP came a close second to Cadman with the Liberal and CPC candidates a distant third and fourth, respectively. Running this time for the NDP is a popular former cabinet minister who lives in the riding, spoke at Cadman's funeral and is a close friend of Cadman's widow. All local polls give the NDP the edge to recapture the seat. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Fair enough... -

Nothing would change under a Harper government in terms of marijuana possession I don't think. I don't know about the other provinces but I don't see people going crazy around here about small possession... -
That's the best you can do? You're basically conceding that there's no country hat is a threat to Canada. North Korea, in case you haven't noticed, is across teh Pacific ocean. As for terrorism, I've already pointed out that a beefed up military would do little good in combatting domestic terrorism. Your argument is that the U.S. protects us. But no one making this claim seems to be able to make a case as to who they are protecting us from. That they are the only thing keeping us safe is taken as a matter of faith. Now, realities of "living next to the world's superpower" and all that aside, Canada should not jump into bed with every half-baked project the U.S. defense industry decides is necessary for their financial security. And if we had people of principle in government instea dof the current batch of whores, we'd be able to exercise a greater degree of soverignty over our foreign policy. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> BD, I think we agree more than we disagree. My argument is this. The U.S. doesn't protect us because they really care about Canadians. Protecting Canadian residents is the job of the Canadian government. HOWEVER, the U.S. has an interest here. We live on the same continent as them and they want to make sure of the things going on here. In saying the U.S. "protects us" what I should have been saying is that they "protect their interests here." During the WW II it was the Nazis, in the Cold War Communists, now al-Qaeda. The FBI has an office in Toronto, the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, and Tobacco does too. U.S. INS and Customs offices are in every major Canadian city and at every major Canadian airport.

I'm still here. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I meant that idiot who was posting all that crap. -
I don't think he knows that at all, IMHO they are trying to keep the libs on the defensive rather than the other way around. I think a liberal win is a greater threat to unity than the CPC, as it could effect both Quebec and Alberta. Another mninority will be a tough one, there's no way the electorate would tolerate another election too soon, they will have to try and work together. Right now, I'm not sure how or what it would take to keep a minority government together. Either way, I'm guessing that unless either one of them comes up with an improvement in their party standings, they will step aside. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I wouldn't mind seeing the Conservatives in a minority. I think Martin, though, would be a much better PM in a majority. I think he would be able to make the tough decisions. A minority government makes a humbling idiot out of people.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Klein is just being Klein. No one can understand him here in the East (not that I've ever been West of Toronto...actually I was in California some years back...)

You just posted a poll topic saying that the Liberals would get over 150 seats (at a minimum). If 150 is realistic than 86 even moreso.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}> How much taxpayer money would you say was wasted in that HUGE CPC scandal Shoop? $900 million?
