  1. Yet Russia will not go to war over this... it is as simple as that. They can wait for the next regime, throw some aid their way and they will be in the same place as they are now.
  2. Great so lets blow all the money on bloated budgets that do nothing for the province just because they have secure income for the next 20 or more years... let the next generation worry about it right? Finite resource means it runs out eventually just because there is a lot of oil there doesn't mean they should be stupid about it and live for the moment without a worry about the future. When money is wasted eventually people will find that infrastructure needs repair and no money to do it... see US and Canada for reference more infrastructure to be repaired than the available cash... So let Alberta get to the a shitty situation before we worry about them? Gee I love that theory ignore the problem until it becomes an emergency and then find someone else to blame. Thats great for Saskatchewan, one question though... how does that help Alberta? My neighbours potential wealth does not do much to help me now does it?
  3. You are comparing events in the Balkans to Syria and those two are not similar at all. Russia has ethnic, religious and cultural ties to the Balkans but more important they consider the balkans as their sphere of influence while Syria is just a country to do business with and Russia knows very well as it is that Assad's days are numbered and will not do anything other than protest loudly in the UNSC.
  4. I am pretty sure the US has some form of Dual citizenship.
  5. That is 100% wrong because it deals with nothing, it makes dual citizens second rate citizens while terrorist renounce their citizenship and won't suffer the consequences so all in all it solves nothing. No it doesn't... unless you are suggesting all "Canadians of convenience" are terrorists if they are not terrorists this does not affect them in this form. Sure it does, one can lose their citizenship the other cannot which makes 2 classes of citizens. Or simply renounce your other citizenship. Something that this proposed law is not and does not do. And this is proposing to make it a punishment of sorts, if you are a dual citizen you can lose your Canadian citizenship if you are not you cannot lose it. Or once again renounce their other citizenship and negate this law...
  6. Yet you are not suggesting we keep the "garbage" away from Canada in the first place but give them the chance to do damage using a Canadian passport and then remove the citizenship once the deed is done. Which means that it will be ineffective as the terrorist will give up their other citizenship and will be Canada's problem which solves absolutely nothing. Seems to me you want a feel good "solution" that does not solve any problem whatsoever instead it give the illusion of solving the problem. I am have duel citizenship and I know enough about history to realize that this has happened many times before in every corner of the world and it rarely goes well for the people affected. So what happens when they renounce their citizenship before they commit the act? Cant do anything about them and now you have pissed off half the country without making Canada safer in any way shape or form... What would this law accomplish? You may think that terrorists are idiots but I don't hold that opinion and I think that if this law came in to effect they will just adapt to the situation that is if they even care. What you are telling people here is that if you are a dual citizen and accused or found guilty of terrorism you will be stripped of your citizenship regardless of which third world hellhole accused you or found you guilty of terrorism and all you have to do to get around this law is renounce your other citizenship...
  7. How does this solve anything other than Canada washing its hands and calling it someone else's mess? This prevents nothing as it deals with the consequences... What happens if they renounce their second citizenship before they commit a terrorist act? Cant strip them of their citizenship if they have nowhere to go now can you?
  8. Russia is irrelevant if it comes to NATO intervention in Syria, they might do business with them and probably will use strong language but they will not go to war over Syria. All that was needed was the light and the powder keg would go up in smoke.
  9. What happens when the oil stops and they have done nothing to improve other industries to take up the slack? What happens when their infrastructure starts collapsing and there is no money in the coffers to fix anything? Its fine to stick your head in the sand but that deficit will grow exponentially when the oil runs out and now is the time to improve the conditions for other sources of revenue to move to Alberta. Wether the oil dries up in 5 years or 50 Alberta should be responsible with their budget and be reinvesting as possible in infrastructure to attract businesses or the next generation will be blaming their parents for the mess they inherit from their parents.
  10. And you couldn't put this in one of the four other discussions? Are we to expect a new topic every time a senator is caught being stupid?
  11. And who are we defending them from? The US? Cuba? Haiti?
  12. It seems to me that the current generation is going to sellout the next generation for lower taxes today... The thing I don't get is even without any new provincial tax Alberta could still come out on top if they just reviewed their spending and cut waste. It will not matter one bit to complain 10,20 or 40 years down the road because the current generation decided to waste money and di not improve infrastructure or did not bother to stash away some money for the time when the oil stops being a revenue source...
  13. I think he was trying to tell us why he is here, only he did so in a very roundabout way.
  14. But there were those who were just visiting, vacationing or doing business and just happened to be in the wrong place and the wrong time people that Canada has an obligation to protect just like every other nations with the means to do so tried. It is nice and easy to say that those who lived in Lebanon were not owed anything in the first place but when suddenly 15,000 people show up at the door step of a few dozen embassy staff it is hard to determine who should be evacuated and who would not qualify for evacuation due to residency... Plus add to that the fact that we may have Canadians who have perfectly legitimate reasons to be in the country in question for prolonged period of time such as family medical emergencies, situation where the family member is sick and not a citizen so can't bring them here nor can you leave them to die so it becomes that much harder to judge who is or is not qualified for an evacuation. We end up with rules that are either to vague and many people get denied evacuation or the rules are to strict and only a few cases are denied... There are many options but considering the once when the people making the decision are under pressure might not be the best time to decide... the decisions should be made when a discussion can be held and we can take our time rather than making the decision when the rounds start coming at you.
  15. They do so because the people don't care or are not willing to express their opinion. One day people will wake up and realize the money is gone and instead of having enjoyed the good times and planned for the bad they wasted their resources and their kids are going to suffer... "Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it." It happens time and again when people think of the here and now without planning for the future, it is even worse when the here and now is just wasting money rather than investing in something positive for the future.
  16. What is the point of adding a sales tax if the provincial government has no idea what to do with the money? Even if they did create such a tax what are the chances that the surplus will last for longer than a year or two before its gone and replaced by more thoughtless spending? They need to get their spending in check before adding any new taxes rather than adding the tax and finding a convenient pet project to waste it on.
  17. Where are they going to send Khadr and his family to? Seeing as he was born here... it would only apply to the lesser citizens...you know the once who weren't born here.
  18. It is not just the one thing that is at play here, it is a number of things that finally force action by the PM.
  19. They will do what is necessary to attract tourists if they want jobs, the minimum wage for those serving alcohol in ontario is around $2 less than the regular minimum wage, if people in Ontario can do it why can't the people in T&C in order to attract tourists. Does it matter? If they become part of Canada they will reform them to reach our level... In many places the people who are most likely to make tips have a lower minimum wage, the majority of the workers in resorts would make in and around minimum wage with some pretty good jobs making substantially more. And no one is denying that they would deserve the same standard of living as the rest of Canada but like servers in Ontario bars an restaurants they could make less due to the fact that they will be making tips. I am pretty sure they have British passports now so what is stoping them from moving to the UK? Some will leave but many will stay and jobs will undoubtedly increase exponentially and not just the minimum wage jobs but better and higher paying jobs. If the islands were to become Canadian and security is improves thats an advantage now throw in investment in attractions and hotels and people will be willing to pay a little more to vacation there. If the government introduces strict quality controls where the vacationers know exactly what they are getting when booking a hotel rather than guessing and hoping for the best.
  20. Like you said he left Britain for better opportunities so whether he had Canadian and British or just one of them he would still go where he wants simply because both passports individually afford him the opportunity. Plenty of Canadians with only one citizenship show little loyalty to Canada once they move to another country so I don’t see how it would be any different for dual citizens...
  21. How much do you think the cost would increase if the minimum wage increased from $5/h to $10? And would it increase? It would depend on the Islands themselves if we use the US as an example where they have minimum wage starting from $5.15 to about $9.20 in the states and $4.10-$8.25 in the territories. If we let them decide on their minimum wage while the government encourages investment on the island we could see the number of tourists increase exponentially with a variety of options for hotels and prices. Keeping in mind that tourists that go will also invest substantial amount of money in to the local economy including tips. Are there going to be challenges? Sure, but the benefits if developed properly would be worth the challenges.
  22. And what exactly would that accomplish? This would not make him any more loyal to Canada, if he decides to keep Canadian citizenship he will be of little benefit to the country anyway. I am all for that, I had one Canadian history class in high school that was mandatory and that was it, each grade should get one history class at least but this doesn't mean anything if we teach the wrong history to further our agenda...
  23. We don't need to provide a $1000 all expense paid trip, we need to provide a safe and secure environment where Canadians can to vacation without any of the hassles of vacationing in other nations and its a winner. I can go to Mexico for under $1000 dollars but going to a war zone on the cheap is not my idea of a vacation, a vacation on Canadian territory means that they have access to healthcare on par with the rest of Canada, police is Canadian and laws are Canadian which means that we don't wait for the Mexican authorities to solve crimes associated with Canadians we do it ourselves. It might be a little more expensive but the advantages would outweigh the disadvantages and people will like the appeal of staying in Canada for a vacation.
  24. Thats because the people in the Falkland Islands want to stay British rather than Argentinian, the suggestion is a mutualy agreed upon union rather then a military invasion.
  25. When it’s your citizenship that someone is trying to marginalize then we can talk until then I will be suspicious of such moves on the grounds that this has happened before in Canada and the US both of which are nations with such checks and balances and if it has happened before who is to say it won’t happen again? Where were the checks and balances for the people interned during both World Wars? And to be fair I have spent more of my life in Canada then Europe and all of my adult life has been here so I am as much Canadian as anyone else. I am not afraid of any one government going too far I am afraid of successive government making small changes that ultimately lead to a different reality for immigrants, history is filled with examples of things going too far over a long enough time just as the reverse situation is true where things get better little by little over time. Small changes now and then and in 20 years it might turn out that I am just renting this citizenship as long as it pleases the "real" Canadians. Because this solves absolutely nothing but makes a large segment of the population second class citizens. Seems to me that you don’t want a solution but rather the appearance of a solution When you swear the oath for citizenship would we add that you are Canadian as long as you are doing well but once you screw up you are someone else’s problem? And how would you judge terrorism? I go to Syria as an aid worker and they say I'm a terrorist do I lose my citizenship? What happens if someone loses their citizenship and turns out they were not involved with terrorism? You want to revoke the passports of those involved with terrorism or suspected of terrorism then by all means do so until such a time as they stop being a threat but do not make a double standard where I am worthy of being a Canadian as long as I do what is expected and the second someone says I’m a terrorist I stop being Canadian... that’s like adopting a kid and saying that you are our child as long as you are good, if you screw up we send you back to the orphanage while at the same time telling your biological kid that you love them no matter what and nothing will change that. You can’t return me to my country of birth if I don’t meet your expectations; a citizenship is for life unless obtained under fraudulent conditions...
