Canada's population will hit record 40M on Friday: StatCan
I am Groot replied to CdnFox's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Canadians were never asked their opinions about immigration, especially immigration from countries with vastly different cultures, traditions and values. Nor were they asked their opinions when immigration was hugely increased under Mulroney, who did it largely in hopes of garnering immigrant votes. Immigration hasn't been aimed at helping Canada since the 1960s, but at helping the politicians. I would wager if you showed the Canada of today to Canadians in the 1970s they'd be horrified by the societal breakdown and the loss of their own traditions, institutions, values and culture. -

There is a midpoint between growth and negative growth, you know. It's called a stable population. Even if we agree that at least 'some' growth is good we certainly don't need record-breaking growth like we have now. -

Why? In what way is Canada a better place to live with 40m than it was at 30m or 20m? This is nonsense, of course. If Canadians aren't doing low-skilled work it's because employers refuse to hike the wages and treat them better. As an economist pointed out on a recent Stats Canada report, if employers were really short of staff they'd be raising wages and bringing in automation to replace people. But we're not seeing that happening. We have shortages in a few, key, skilled areas such as healthcare and the trades. But very few of our immigrants are in either category. There's no evidence of this. And what type. I think bringing in low-skilled workers is insane, frankly. These jobs are largely going to be eliminated by AI in the near future and then what will we have? Hundreds of thousands of sullen, unemployable people angry at Canada. -
This is the kind of thing you'll see in Canada if the Trudeau, Hardner and Antifa crowd have their way. A young girl pushed to have a double mastectomy because she started thinking she might be a boy. No therapy. No psychiatric treatment. Come right in and we'll put you on drugs and take off your breasts! https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12206847/Woman-pressured-breast-removal-13-erroneous-belief-transgender-lawsuit.html

And Bil Barr, a Trump loyalist and attorney general, says the indictment looks solid, that it has eyewitness testimony from Trump's own former lawyers aides and staffers, as well as video and audio evidence. Other Republicans who aren't busy felleting Trump in hopes of gaining a job say the same. Meanwhile Trump's lawyers keep quitting because he wants them to lie or allow him to lie.

Unassailable? LOL. Without the raw resources it imports and the finished products it exports the US economy would shrink rapidly, and with it the ability to pay for all those military toys. Let China control the world's natural resources and they won't have to use their military to beat the US they'll be able to buy it out and dictate terms.

America doesn't police 'the world' because it gives a damn about foreigners. It wants a stable world because that's what's best for its economy in terms of exporting goods and importing raw materials. It wants a stable world because its people move around, millions away from the US at any given moment. It wants to avoid its enemies gaining control over areas of the world that they can then use to help support their move against American power and influence. The US didn't attack Hitler because he was a mean man. They did it because they knew that if Hitler took over the world they'd come for America next and they didn't want that to happen. America has always preferred to fight its enemies on someone else's shores. But now a certain type of American wants to just let their enemies become more and more powerful, take over the world, and only when they land in Texas or New Hampshire or California consider doing something about it.

You want to return universities to sanity? Slash their grants if their non-teaching administrative staff reaches a certain percentage or number. Make them get rid of most of those stupid equity 'experts' pulling down six-figure salaries. You can do the same for any organization that receives government funding. Check out the size of their HR group and refuse to give grants or benefits if they're too large.

So everyone wear pink hats. There, you've got your change. Does it make anything better? Nope. Would you like to hazard a guess about whether we're in more debt today than we were when our population was half as big? Even allowing for proportion and inflation? Yeah, it is. Because bringing in more people over to pay more taxes also means more government services have to be supplied. And if a large number of those people are unskilled or low-skilled labour then under our proportionate tax system they aren't going to be contributing anything to the budget anyway. They'll just be a net draw. -

In 1960 the population was under 18 million. A house cost 2.5 times your annual income, and a car was half your annual income. Now the average house costs over ten times the average income, and the average new car costs almost the entirety of the average income. In what way has Canada benefited from doubling its population? -
Is that not a mirror of Trudeau's style over substance governing? Not to mention his electioneering. Virtue signal, make grand statements but don't actually do much to fulfill anything you've promised, Distract, divide, get people angry over this or that. Hey, we need to raise gun control again! That's always good to teach that rabble out in the countryside that us liberal arts grads in the cities are in charge! And will someone please find me some transgender people to put on the supreme court!?

What WOULD a judge know about it? He's not hired because he knows or cares about justice, or because of his or her deep store of legal knowledge, acumen, and wisdom. Nor does a black robe grant them any particular insight into the human condition. They're appointed because they're ideologically similar to the government, of the proper geographical location, are bilingual, and preferably have some kind of ethnic or gender background that lets the government brag about its inclusiveness. None of that suggests the people being appointed are even particularly intelligent, much less have good judgment. They got through law school? Okay, but any halfway intelligent person with a decent memory can read and regurgitate what they've seen. It's literally not rocket science. Judges have proven more and more as the years advance that the sentences they hand out have little correlation with justice, safety of the public, or what the public believes suits the crimes. I think that ability should be removed from them and handed over to the juries. Or at least that the judge and jury have to consult and agree on the sentence.

He's incompetent at anything beyond the sales job he's been doing (where he was unethical), he's arrogant beyond reason, he's lazy as sin, and he demands loyalty and deep respect bordering on veneration from those around him while returning none. He's also utterly unprincipled. I mean, sure Biden is corrupt. All American politicians are corrupt. But Biden isn't going to try to drag the country down in flames to extend his time in office or deny losing an election. Of all these, his incompetence is the worst. We can't have a man as appallingly ignorant of basic facts and reality as Trump in an office like that, especially when he ignores advice from everyone who disagrees with him, regardless of their expertise. He thinks he knows better than the generals because he went to military school. He ignores his intelligence advisors because he thinks FOX news and Breitbart have the only knowledge he needs. He doesn't understand or care about economics or world geopolitics, and couldn't be bothered to read any of the reports sent to him. All this from the people he brought into the White House with him. With strong men like Putin, Xi Jinping, Erdogan, and Kim Jong Un, throwing elbows to get greater power and influence the world can't afford an American president who is far more concerned with his twitter war with a Tier B actress than national security.

Bad people don't volunteer. We can start with putting firm deadlines and dates into contracts, as well as penalties for failure. Such things are routine in commercial contracts. More money to the AGs office, and to the Information Commissioner, along with new rules on opening government files to the public. That tally included the aircraft.

It's a stupid, unworkable idea. Even cops don't have them turned on all the time, only when they think they should. And cops have uniforms. Cops have to file official reports on everything they do. Cops have to be questioned by defense lawyers on every arrest. Politicians don't wear uniforms, and their backroom deals are made by their aides discussing things obliquely with anonymous, faceless lobbyists in restaurants and bars. I don't think anyone really comes out and bluntly says to a politician, "If you do this for me I will give you that".
