I read the article. The thing is, to say it is cheaper is absolutely false. Once infrastructure is built, once logistics are established, once all training aircrew and ground crew are finished, once parts and overhaul facilitates are incorporated, ... then maybe the Grippen could be, but not a given. The other thing is what the aircraft primary objective is and it is not the European theatre. The "institute" does not take any of that into consideration. EDIT...to add, the only ones talking about merged or 2 fleets is social media. No military persons want this. Military realizes the best fighter for Canada and it, requirements and missions and service is the F35.

Yes....protecting home turf usurps foreign involvement. Combat control systems is the heart of any combat ship and interoperability is of the utmost importance.

Swedish Griffen vs American (Trump) F-35
ExFlyer replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The CF-18's have served us exceptionally well. We need to consider ourselves first. Our responsibility is to Canada and NORAD...NATO is secondary. -
There are many things that Transport Canada does with its aircraft and systems that can be very useful to the Military. Just the offshore aerial surveillance that they do that can be a useful tool as well as airspace guidance and control and runway and landing systems operations and maintenance. Shifting responsibility does in no way lessen the cost of operations.
-
Yes it is...always has been. Our concerns and issue are far more NORAD than NATO. As for the naval fleet, it needs to have CCS (command and control systems) as well as AGS (Agis combat systems) in order to be combat ready and functional with allies. As I have said all along. Dual fleets are problematic and, European fleets are financially and logistically disastrous. It seems to me that politicians are not the ones making issues of these things..it is social media LOL

If you were military at all, you are, or should be, aware that the delivery takes years and planning and training for new equipment will be done. There is no Amazon for military devices that promise overnight delivery.

No surprise in any way. CAE is the worlds largest flight simulator manufacturer in the world. It makes them foe almost all Air Forces and airlines in the world. based on its market leadership in civil and defense flight simulators and aviation training services. Again...what are you saying???
-
"the interoperability argument is BS." The interoperability right now is only with the Link 16 communications. "All NATO and partner nations adhere to common operational and communication standards" and "Standardized data links, such as Link 16, allow different platforms to communicate and share tactical information, providing a shared operational picture" There is a lot more than communications. Weapon systems, targeting, capability etc.

Ok... believe what you wish.

Swedish Griffen vs American (Trump) F-35
ExFlyer replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
If you are gonna try and make some points...at least be familiar with what you are talking about,. It is the Swedish GRIPPEN... LOL. ""Griffen" is a legendary creature (griffin), a common given name, a place in Austria, or a surname associated with various notable individual. The mythical griffin is a creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle" -
Wow...I am truly bewildered by your post. You are reposting what i said?? I am not sure what you are saying or trying to say.

Has he not been saying that since he became president (and even before)? And here we are...still no peace. I think Putin is laughing at him every time he says that. He knows Trump is full of hot air when saying that.
-
The unfortunate thing is no one can put faith in Trump. The fortunate thing is that Trump will be gone in 3 years. President Vance...does that not make you quiver? LOL The Gripen may seem cheaper but, once modifications and additions to make it North American compatible...will it really be cheaper? There are a lot of components in an aircraft, especially in the avionics but also the mechanical parts of it. The logistics of maintain the aircraft is huge and the bits ill not be made for maintained in Canada. If we only own 60 or so aircraft, it makes no sense financially or logistically to build facilities her. The cost of Cormorant (our SAR aircraft) logistics is outrageous. Many parts have to go back to Europe for repair, overhaul and maintenance. And the Cormorant is not anywhere near as technologically complex as a fighter aircraft. I am not pro American, especially in to days political climate but, I am realistic and fully understand our immediate (and in the near future) needs and that is to protect us and our sovereignty. We rarely send out fighter aircraft out of country. I think less than a dozen on our 50 year ownership.

War or armed conflict will have casualties...both sides. Point was and is both side plan for victories. If John Stone thinks a Trump plan is victory, well so be it.
