  1. You probably meant *armed* and not *unarmed*. Fair. The equipment you mentioned, and proper training, should be more than enough to deal with an assailant with a knife. Regadless, good work in arming the border guards!
  2. The thread or the OP? Brison is not the right man for the job, but not because of his sexual orientation. He ran for the PC leadership and has been a Liberal for how long? Also remember that part of his platform in the PC leadership was more private involvement in healthcare and an integrated defence strategy with the U.S. If the Liberals are truly looking to set themselves apart from the CPC then Brison is not the way to go.
  3. It is far from that simple. Why would Ontario be oppposed to more autonomy? If the Conservatives offer more provincial autonomy, with support, no provinces will be opposed. The question will be what sort of deal the feds can strike with the provinces. Harper has to be firm, but fair, on the first set of negotiations. Remember that Martin got royally screwed on that *health fix for a generation* in the summer of 2004 (Is a generation really less than two years?) and the provinces are still clamouring for more cash.
  4. Tru, but are there any provinces that are *opposed* to more Provincial autoonomy?
  5. I come from Alberta but I don't live there anymore. I honestly think Harper will be able to please both Alberta and Quebec. As long as he works towards rebuilding Federalism in Quebec while keeping his campaign promises he will be fine.
  6. Dion would be an interesting question. Would he honestly appeal more to Quebecker's than Harper will? Sounds like an easy question to answer, but look at the group of Quebec voters that just swung to Harper...
  7. It's going to be a fun race indeed. Will set things up nicely for the 2008 election. An experienced PM Harper going up against an untested Liberal leader. Could be time for a majority....
  8. Uhhh, yeah. Thought that one was common knowledge. Regardless of what happens the Liberals are going to be in for a real leadership race this go round. Kinda sad that, but at least it gives the CPC a good year to govern without much threat from them.
  9. I would say Trudeau's win in 1972 (Two seats more than the Tories) was a lot leaner. That one even lasted 20 months. How wonky would he Harper have to get?
  10. I definitely think it doesn't leave the Liberals much room for growth. They have pretty much as big a chunk of the big three cities as they could hope for. 1/3 of their MPs are from three cities. Shrewd Conservative policy would be to run a quiet, efficient Federal Government while appealing directly to voters in these three cities. That alone could win them a majority next time around.
  11. Actually Andre Boisclair said just that during the PQ leadership race. When I heard that, and heard Boisclair's continuing reasons to still keep fighting for Quebec independence is when I realized emotional appeals are the only things that will help keep Quebec around.
  12. Let's take the group of big *but not big three* Canadian cities. Calgary - 8 CPC Edmonton - 8 CPC Halifax - 3 CPC, 2 Liberal, 2 NDP Ottawa - 5 CPC, 2 Liberal, 1 NDP Winnipeg - 3 CPC, 2 Liberal, 3 NDP Total 31 CPC 6 Liberal 8 NDP Big three Montreal - 11 Liberal, 7 Bloc Toronto - 20 Liberal, 3 NDP Vancouver - 4 Liberal, NDP Total 35 Liberal 0 CPC 6 NDP, 7 Bloc True they *technically* have the most urban support, but just barely and far from enought to make up their big deficit in the sticks...
  13. Canada is only *primarily* urban if you count Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Ottawa and Quebec City. The Conservatives won the most seats of anybody in each of those cities. Urban Canada is more than Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.
  14. Hey, that sorta talk will get you accused of being homophobic by some... With McKenna, Manley, Tobin (and maybe Rock) out of the picture this is definitely going to be a race full of second-stringers.
  15. You gotta remember a couple things. Ralphie balanced the budget when oil was less than $20 a barrel. No help offered to Alberta by any other province at that time. Sure Alberta got lucky with the oil. But so did Ontario and Quebec with the huge U.S. population bases just south of the Great Lakes. That market was not a result of Ontario or Quebec industriousness. Needless to say, it is easy to whine about how *lucky* a more prosperous neighbour is without looking at the luck you also have received.
  16. There is some merit in TML's comment about the Liberal brand. However, when businesses talk about brand value they are talking in terms of a commodity that can be bought and sold. You cannot buy or sell a party name in Canada. The Liberals ability to raise cash has fallen precipitously. I really do question this $4-5 Million dollar figure for a number of reasons. Who is Jonathan Ross (whose blog August1991 linked to)? Why is he posting information like this? I just cannot see how the Liberal's debt is only $4-5 Million...
  17. Great point. CBC does not need newsworld. Newsworld should not exist with the aid of government funding.
  18. There are a few names that I don't think will make the final cut, but overall a good list. Can't see Ambrose getting Foreign Affairs, although she will likely get a spot of some kind...
  19. Completely agreed, yet American taxpayers don't have to fund the FoxNews. Canadian taxpayers have to fund CBCs objectivity....
  20. I was asking about who runs the site you started this thread with. Losing track of all the questions you are avoiding gerry?
  21. Sure, but there is still no need for a Government funded network. (I actually was going to include a reference about Corner Gas and TPB receiving some sort of funding, but I guessed you would trip over yourself to find this *proof* anwyays. No reason for me to save you the work. )
  22. Are you on medication? I feel like the dolt for arguing with a whackjob like you at all. You win gerry, good luck with the tinfoil hat brigade. Which one was negative and which one positive again?
