Why is Danny Williams knocking a sweet deal?
GreenWhiteandPink replied to Michael Bluth's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Actually the world wide drop in the price of oil to under $10 a barrel from $39.50 within 12 months of the implemention of the NEP caused this not the NEP it self! Harper broke his promise! End of story. -
Why is Danny Williams knocking a sweet deal?
GreenWhiteandPink replied to Michael Bluth's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Look it's like this, Harper promised before he got elected that 100% of non-renewable resources would be exempt. Now that he is PM he is saying he never changed his position but only 50% of non-renewable resources is exempt! He broke his promise! And like Harper said "There is no greater fraud that a promise not kept"! And why shouldn't he! That's what Harper promised him. If someone told you that you could make X billion dollars and afterwards chaged the rules so that you can only get X minus 5 billion wouldn't you be pissed off! Williams is only fighting to protect the interests of Newfoundland and Labrador, the same way Peter Lougeed did for Alberta when Trudeau introducted of the National Energy Program. -
Why is Danny Williams knocking a sweet deal?
GreenWhiteandPink replied to Michael Bluth's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Harper lied to Newfounders and Labradorians, he promised that 100% of non renewable resources will be excluded from equalization, in two sucessive elections. Either Harper didn't know what he was talking about when he made the promise or he straight out made a promise he had no intention of keeping, which will mean a loss a 5 billion of potentional revenue for NL. Williams knows that isn't going to change now, he just wants Canadian voters to know that Harper lied to NL and Canadians should not trust any of his promises. -
And the majority of Canadians now support SSM, the issue has been dealt with and it's settled. Get over it. No one is forcing you to marry another woman, so what business is it to you what 2 other people do. Stop trying to force your beliefs down other people's throats. Would one of the mod's close thos thread!

Dion dismantles the attacks on him.
GreenWhiteandPink replied to gerryhatrick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That's exactly what Harper said. Can't you think of any original thoughts for yourself. No one cares that Dion has dual citizenship by virtue of his mother being born in France. He loves his "mudder". -
Canadians are healthier and have better access to health care than U.S. residents. And, according to a new study, Canadians obtain better care for half of what Americans spend on their medical system. The study, published in the American Journal of Public Health, was conducted by Harvard Medical School researchers. They also found that: Canadians were seven per cent more likely to have a regular doctor Canadians were 19 per cent less likely than Americans to have their health needs go unmet. Americans were more than twice as likely to forgo needed medicines because of cost. CTV

Maritimes continue the burden on Canada
GreenWhiteandPink replied to geoffrey's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
As someone from Newfoundland and Labrador, I would like to voice my opinions on the issue. !) First all Atlantic Canadians are not all lazy EI drawing welfare bums, just as Albertan's are not all cowboy hat wearing redneck hicks. There are many hardworking (year round) ppl here, and hundreds of thousands more who couldn't find work have left over the past 20-30 to find work in other parts of Canada. Many of the comments in this thread are just plain ignorant. A 10% unemployment rate means that 9 out of 10 people work right? 2) Seasonal workers drawing EI year after year is wrong I agree. There are many fish plants in Newfoundland that operate in the manner. PPL get hired on in the spring and get 12-16 weeks work and get laid off then draw EI for the rest of the year, complete abuse of the EI system as far as I am concerned. There are numerous communities like this here, with a population of 1000-3000 people that exist solely because of the EI program, if it never worked in this manner these towns would wither and die. The reason why many ppl don't leave is that they can get a full year income. In effect EI is subsidizing these fish plants, by paying fish workers salaries for part of the year. If the government stopped fish companies from hiring and laying workers yearly this problem would be solved. And Greg, as someone who lives in Alberta, I find it surprising that you would make such a statement seeing how there areare 15-20000 people in Fort Mac Misery that moved there from Newfoundland and Labrador, and well as thousands of others across Alberta. Since 1991 over 50000 people have moved from Newfoundland and Labrador to other parts of Canada alone, not counting the other Atlantic provinces. -
"Employment Tax Credit"?
GreenWhiteandPink replied to SamStranger's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Appearently anyone who works. It'a a $1000 tax credit which means a $150 tax refund (or $150 less tax owing if you owe after filling). It basically matches the Liberals 15% lowest income tax bracket than the liberals introduced which will remain in affect till June 30, 2006 when the rate get's increased to 15.5%. If you make over 36000k the applicable tax you pay from the lowest bracket will basically be the same under both schemes, it's just more confusing and misleading under the conservative plan. Raise taxes to give a "tax credit". The conservatives (or the liberals when ever they return to power) should just get rid of alot of the "tax credits" and raise the basic personal exemption or raise the lowest tax bracket rate. Simplfy the tax system, not make it more confusing. -
Answer all your responses truthfully, as is required by law. Why would you want to lie on a census form. I got mine a few hours ago, had it completed within 4-5 mintues online. It was the 2A (short).
-
What is the problem August 1991? Just complete the census form. 1 in 5 households get a long questionarie which it looks like you have, it will only take 15 mintues. Your making a big deal over nothing. From the Stats Canada website Do I have to fill in my census form? Yes. By law, every household in Canada must provide the information requested in the census and by the same law, Statistics Canada must protect the personal information provided by respondents. Is the information on census questionnaires confidential? Yes. Employees working on the census must follow specific instructions and procedures to ensure that confidentiality is maintained. Only those employees who need to use completed census forms for their work will see individual forms. Statistics Canada is bound by law to protect the identity of individuals in all published data. Anonymity is assured in all data releases — data are randomly rounded to the nearest multiple of five or ten, and no detailed data are released for areas with populations below a certain size. PS As of the 1996 Census that I worked on it was a summary offence not to complete the Census form, which means 6 months in jail or a $1000 dollar fine or both.

I don't live in Ontario so it's no expense to me. Publicly funded daycares enables parents to work and pay taxes, which in turn pay for the cost of publicly funded daycare. I don't have a problem with some of my tax money going to help someone work to provide for themselves. I do have a problem however with it going to a parent who chooses to not to work and live off social services, I see this happening everyday and it makes me sick.
-
The checks go to the parents, not to the children. Parents on welfare have children that grow up and live on welfare, it called the cycle of poverty. Giving a parent on social services a hunderd dollars a month will acomplish nothing. These ppl don't don't work, they don't need "child care" money. Now if they had a subsidized child care space then maybe they can go out and provide for themselves, and set a example for their child rather than teching them to go out and get pregnant at 17-18 and live off other working tax payers.

Fiscal Imbalance Could Leave Ontario Odd Man Out
GreenWhiteandPink replied to Nocrap's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The federal government has never taken the Atlantic provinces off shore oil revenues per say, they just reduced transfer payments as the oil royalities increased (which is what is susposed to happen under the equalization scheme). Under the the new Atlantic Accord agreement NL and NS can keep both for a 7+ year term, so that we can turn our fiscal situation around. Since the agreement has been reached, NL has had 2 surplus budgets and has paid off 2 billion in debt. If this agrrement had never had been reached NL would never become a "have" province, as our current oil supplies will only last 20 years or so. PS Newfoundland and Labrador is not part of the Maritimes either. Maritime provinces= NB, NS and PEI Atlantic provinces= NB, NS, PEI and Newfoundland and Labrador -
Fiscal Imbalance Could Leave Ontario Odd Man Out
GreenWhiteandPink replied to Nocrap's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
There is no fiscal imbalance. It just a ploy some provinces use to blame the feds for their problems. Any government running a deficit has to do one of two things 1) Cut spending 2) Raise taxes, neither is politically popular, so in some provinces choose a third option ...blame the federal government. -
The Canadian Embassey is also putting up big posters all over D.C. (airports, rail stations etc.) now too, making the american pol's in Wash D.C. know that Canada is helping in the "war on terror".

Rewarding Laziness in Canada
GreenWhiteandPink replied to Mimas's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The only ppl that the $1200 a year will benefit are ppl living on social assistance, as $1200 will only pay for 1-2 months of child care and will not enable low income individuals to work instead of staying home in order to take care of their children. It will not enable a one of two parents to stay at home either as $1200 a year is nothing to replace a second income. People on social assistance will now also receieve this money $100 bucks a month for every kid the produce, yet they don't work. I don't see how any true fiscal conservative can surport this program. It is unfair and inefficient. Why not just make the Liberal Tax Cut permanent, and reduce the GST. Have no "No-Choice Child Care" program, because in it current proposed form it's useless. -
We have so many children in this world that need help and protection what do Paul McCartney and Bardot do? It's certainly not defend and fight for them but baby seals! I agree with Danny Williams arguments and Mr. Harper's avoidance of Ms. Bardot and the McCartney's. They think because they're celebrities that heads of government should make time for them when they demand it.
