Is there some new progressive definition of "couple", I am unaware of. This has happened to me several times in recent weeks, and again today when I walked into the bank and requested a couple of rolls of quarters. The teller asked me if I meant two, is there something else I could mean?

Yup same thing happened to me, a coupla times. I went to the bank and wanted to make a withdrawal. She said "How much?" I said, "Oh, a coupla hundred."
