  1. I don't disagree. The problem then isn't "immigration"; it's crime, right?
  2. Sounds like the trailer park near my place. All the druggies I see wandering about and setting up their camps are white. I have seen two 'immigrant' women (no idea if they are first, second or third generation immigrants) begging at the intersections; the rest appear to be from from "old Stock Canadians". The Muslim people I know are employed, most are better employed than I am. There is a gang problem here, though, which seems mostly peopled by second/third generation South Asians and Whites. That is consistent with studies demonstrating that immigrants are initially more law-abiding than the native-born but by the third generation, the crime behavior is the same. I guess that's assimilation or integration, too.
  3. Major news organizations are centered in large cities. Smaller cities get short shrift in terms of news, not to mention weather forecasts. Having lived in small towns in BC, I know that Vancouver & environs gets most of the coverage, and whatever small town I lived in got nearly nothing. I currently subscribe to a few "small town" newspapers, and believe me - the amount of crime, especially violent crime, that barely gets mentioned on major networks is astounding.
  4. The cite is embedded here: All you gotta do is click on it. I didn't deny anything of the sort; you are lying again. All I did was point out that it's not as simple as 'Muslims are driving Jews out of France and Europe". That you chose to pretend I said something entirely different is on you. Here's more information demonstrating that there is more to the story than "Muslims bad!" Poway attack illustrates danger of right-wing extremists to Jews and Muslims. Jews, Muslims targets of European racist hatred. Right wing extremist attacks growing. Islamic terror threat decreasing. Now, just to make it clear: I think many Muslims are anti-Semitic. Just as many white people are anti-Muslim. Hate is hate, whether felt by a Muslim against Jews, or a Canadian against Muslims. Pretending Muslims are worse than any others is deliberate blindness. "Ism", hatred and extremism needs to be called out wherever it shows up.
  5. But as long as one dislikes "the other", they will ignore the rise in hate crimes and the politics of fear-mongering. They'll even do their best to support that fear-mongering.
  6. Awww, did I poke a hole in your "Muslims are bad" rhetoric?
  7. Crime is highest in smaller population centers.
  8. Which is what we have. Even Donald Trump is a fan, so how could you possibly have a problem with it.
  9. Are you sure?
  10. Given he was specifically speaking about Canada, I don't see how that's relevant. And if we are thinking "more globally", why don't we care about all the Muslim victims in China and India? Or the Muslims in Iraq, Syria, etc., who've been killed by Western powers and Western weapons?
  11. When the richest people/corporations were taxed more, US citizens were better off. When politicians became enamored of 'trickle-down' economics, US citizens became gradually worse off - except of course, the richest who paid fewer and fewer taxes while failing to create economic wealth; instead they shunted their money out-of-country. Millennials, being generally much more educated than those who came before, will no doubt see through this idiocy and devise a system that permits everyone in rich countries to benefit - even if it means the richest have to pay their fair share. Your automatic denigration of entire groups of people about whom you know very little, and therefore think you can simply insult and dismiss, on display again.
  12. And look what happened thanks to progressives - we stopped arresting gay people, we stopped (mostly) attacking/killing gay people, gay people can get married. We also let women have abortions, and we don't insist everyone get married. We don't send young girls away if they get pregnant, than take their children away from them. We've moved beyond "you chose him; you stay with him even if he beats the crapola out of you" and "It's better to be married, even if it means you get beat up regularly". Thanks to progressive young people, and the old people who remained progressive. No thanks to the people who became more fearful and less accepting of changing social values that mean inclusion even of those who think or dress or even behave a little differently.
  13. Millenials are fine with diversity; once the "old guard" dies off, Canada can be done with this xenophobic crap.
  14. Someone has to show leadership. If we refuse to do our part, the "really bad polluters" will simply point to us and say 'Why should we? They aren't, even though they are among the worst in per capita emissions." Canada per capita emissions: 20.3 tonnes China per capita emissions: 7.2 tonnes India per capita emissions: 1.8 tonnes. US per capita emissions: 16.5 tonnes Let's see some of that much ballyhooed "taking responsibility" from conservatives, instead of trying to avoid it by pointing fingers at countries where individuals use less energy than individuals in Canada.
  15. No doubt when you tried to instil good behavior in your kids, you were swayed by their argument that "nobody else/everybody else was doing it" and immediately dropped your standards for your kids and yourself.
  16. Ok @Rue and @egghead British Columbia, economy grew, emissions decreased. Sweden - highest carbon tax, economy grew by 60%, emissions decreased by 25%. The last source is in PDF form so I can't link to it. Search for OECDEffective Carbon Rates 2018. "Carbon prices increase resource efficiency, boost investment in clean energy and low-emission goods and services, and facilitate a gradual low-carbon transition." "To illustrate effectiveness, consider the effect of the carbon price support in the United Kingdom. The policy increased carbon prices in the electricity sector from EUR 7/tCO2 to more than EUR 30/tCO between 2012 and 2016. Emissions from the electricity sector decreased by 58% in the same period. Overall UK emissions from energy use fell by 25%, of which 19 percentage points are due to cleaner electricity generation."
  17. As if free-market capitalism is the holy grail. Sure, we in the first world have greatly benifitted, but at what cost to the rest of the world and succeeding generations? Harper promises subsidies to farmers. Bernier criticizes Harper subsidies. Harper's tax increases. Harper champions carbon tax through cap and trade.
  18. It's hardly my fault, or Trudeau's or leftists' that the people screaming in the media about the carbon tax do not take 10 minutes to find out what else is happening, eh? And the 10 minutes research I did this morning shows that the 'subsidy reduction' was a left wing solution and the 'subsidy increase' was a right wing solution - depending on which industry is being subsidized. But good on you for actually presenting alternatives; I learned something while investigating and debunking your assumptions.
  19. I agree that nuclear power has possibilities. It seems that its also being considered as part of the solution by the current Canadian government. Reduction of fossil fuel subsidies is also being looked at by the federal government. In the meantime, Alberta is increasing its fossil fuel subsidies. Clearly "taxing our way out" isn't our only solution; many other initiatives are occurring - much of which you agree with. These initiatives will make the carbon tax even more effective in getting people used to the idea that fossil fuels are gradually being phased out.
  20. You mean like this, suggested when Harper was still PM? Canada does offer subsidies for the development of green energies. Canada’s investment in energy innovation is an important part of building our clean economy. Learn more about our contributions to Research, Development and Demonstration projects in Canada.
  21. I think it's also got value in reminding people that use of fossil fuels has consequence beyond how much it costs. We can no longer fight climate change. Perhaps we can still mitigate it to some extent, and carbon taxes support that. Yes, we must do much more. But doing nothing because what we can do will not solve the entire problem is not a reasonable stance. If the anti-carbon tax people have an alternative that was equal to or more effective than a carbon tax in reducing the use of fossil fuels, then they should present it. Otherwise they just come across as cranks who care more about a few dollars a year in their pockets than about the wellbeing of the next couple of generations.
  22. Its been demonstrated that carbon taxes succeeds in its goal to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Reducing the use of fossil fuels is part of mitigating climate change. That you refuse to accept these facts is not the fault of the plan or the people who implement it. If you have a better plan, share it. If you do not, then get out of the way of those who do have a plan, imperfect as it may be.
  23. Seriously? That's all you have? Generally in life it's the person who is complaining about the plan who is expected to demonstrate a better way. Biatching about about the leadership of others without having anything better to offer generally gets the complainer ignored and dismissed.
  24. On the news 5 minutes ago: several mills in the Cariboo region of BC are shutting down. Why? Pine beetles and forest fires have reduced the timber supply. Climate change means that pine beetles can survive winters and kill more trees and that there are more forest fires. Not doomsday for you, perhaps, but certainly for the people and small towns who have relied on the forest industry for their livelihood for generations. Carbon tax reduces the use of fossil fuels which reduces the effects on our climate. It's true we must do much more, but it's the people who object to a few extra cents at the pump because "it's not gonna work" and the politicians who pander to them who are the danger to all of us. And so what does "the right" propose to mitigate the effects of climate change? I have heard nothing from them except complaints about taxes, whining about gender, immigrants and Islam, mockery about species extinction and the crisis our children and grandchildren will face as much of the world becomes uninhabitable if we continue to do nothing. If government intervention isn't the answer, what does "the right" propose?
  25. Pete Buttigieg with the only acceptable answer RE: “late term abortions:”

Buttigieg: I think the dialogue has gotten so caught up on where you draw the line that we’ve gotten away from the fundamental question of who gets to draw the line and I trust women to draw the line when it’s their own health.

Chris Wallace: So just to be clear, you’re saying you would be okay with a woman, well into the third trimester deciding to abort her pregnancy.

Buttigieg: Look, these hypotheticals are usually set up in order to provoke a strong emotional --

Wallace: It’s not hypothetical, there are 6,000 women a year who get abortions in the third trimester.

Buttigieg: That’s right, representing less than 1 percent of cases. So let’s put ourselves in the shoes of a woman in that situation. If it’s that late in your pregnancy, then almost by definition, you’ve been expecting to carry it to term. We’re talking about women who have perhaps chosen a name. Women who have purchased a crib, families that then get the most devastating medical news of their lifetime, something about the health or the life of the mother or viability of the pregnancy that forces them to make an impossible, unthinkable choice. And the bottom line is as horrible as that choice is, that woman, that family may seek spiritual guidance, they may seek medical guidance, but that decision is not going to be made any better, medically or morally, because the government is dictating how that decision should be made."

^^Don't kid yourself, In Canada there is a free abortion awaiting every young girl who's afraid her woohoo will stretch out too much if she has a baby.

^^ Don't kid yourself.   PEI only recently got abortion clinics funded and there are gestational limits for surgical abortions:

      Summerside - 14 weeks / Moncton - 14 weeks / Halifax, Nova Scotia - 16 weeks

      MISOGYNISTIC !!!!

Provinces still sending women to the U.S. for late term abortions, because of a lack of "services" in Canada:

"Yet experts disagree, saying the fact that even a small number of Canadian women have to go south of the border for abortions points to gaps in availability in the province."
