Economy Hot & Unemployment 30 Yr. Low
mirror replied to THELIBERAL's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I have seen the incredibly positive financial projections for Alberta because of the tar sand oil. I have even read that eventually Alberta may be able to do away with provincial income taxes. What are the possibilities of Canada's debt eventually being paid down with some of this money? -
I think Rove is done like dinner, but will they be able to get Bush as well is now the big question. Politically and legally this White House crowd is in deep do do: Follow the Uranium

What's tan? Is that a sun-drenched white person or a person with brown skin? Maybe you are missing the point. Generalizations or stereotyping a race or a culture, etc. is not helpful and only breds more problems. -
Interesting comments all of them. I believe that the Republicans will choose McCain, to try and moderate their image, and he probably would be their best bet. If he does run and get the nomination, it will be very close between him and Hilary, and it could go either way. I agree however that she will win, but by a very small margin.

Here's an article which explains what has happened and why this is such an nightmare situation for Rove . It was OK for the president to lie to the American people about the war in Iraq, but now that the Washington Press Corp realize that they have been lied to by Bush & Co., they will be relentless in acquiring their pound of flesh. White House in panic over spy scandal Tomorrow should prove to be an interesting day! Stay tuned.

Who would be a better leader than Harper?

I agree. But if you watch the news nite after nite you will always see several minutes of news about street crime, and rarely mews about corporate crime, which is just as rampant. Anyway to each their own I suppose. I used to like the CBC but after having studied, at least their News department, they may as well be a wing of the federal Liberals. In 2007 IWT will be starting to broadcast which is going to be free of any corporate sponsorship. It will be an interesting experiment and I think people will be truly shocked by the results after they have been up and running for a while. -
Why? both Martin and Harper are disapproved by more than 50% of the Canadian population. Harper took a new party and almost won the last election, winning 99 seats, quite a good showing when you think of it. So he has some growing pains, who doesn't. Layton had growing lessons as well. Remeber how it backfired on him when he accused Martin of being personally responsible for homeless deaths. Look at all the mistakes Martin has made around ethics and integrity - Shapiro and Sgro. Everybody makes mistakes. I disagree with where a leader is from should have any bearing on a national party leader. He or she is supposed to represent all of Canada, not one portion of it. The Liberals have alternated between French and English leaders for some time now, and that strategy seems to work for them. At some point though some other representation is needed such as First Nation, Jewish, Muslim, etc. Because of our regional tensions it is good to have a deputy leader such as MacKay & MacLellan, although neither one of them is any shinning beacon of intelligence. Hang in there with Stephen he may surprise you in a positive way.

What do people think are going to be the results of the Gomery commission? I think it is going to something similiar to Shapiro's report on Sgro. It will be so fuzzy that every competing interest is going to say they won. The Conservatives would do well to focus on other stuff as well like their own platform. Liberals are very tricky. If the wind is shifting right they will propose tax cuts. If the winds are shifting left, they will propose a national child care system, whatever it takes to stay in office. The problem for the Liberals right now as it appears that there are 3 strong alternatives to them, the Cons, the New Democrats, and the Bloc, so they don't have much room to manoevre like they have had in the past.

Of course they are not, so why should we be coming down on the Muslim community for the actions of a few murderers? I am tired of hearing people malign the entire Muslim community for the terrible behaviour of a few Muslims. I hope all the perpetuators of these dastardly crimes are apprehended and severely punished just like the former CEO of World Com was caught and apprehended, and is now going to be punished for his sick crimes as well. I also think though that we need to think through the results of our supression of minorities to positions of prominance in our Canadian society. We are paying the price and will continue to pay the price for it. A major culprit in all this is our corporate media which unfortunately bring us the corporate news every nite. We need the peoples news every nite instead. IMHO.
-
Like it or not we live in multiculteral societies which are only going to continue to grow with their cultural diversities. I don't know what the figures are for Canada and the US, does anyone know what they are, but Europe already has 20 million Muslims, and so we had better learn to somehow live together much better than we have so far, as Muslims are here to stay. The system is broken but not in the way most people think it is. Average Muslim families are not our enemies. An ex-Canadian corporate crook, head of World-Com, just got sentenced to 25 years in jail for creating the largest fraud the world has every known. If we are going to blame Muslims for these attacks in London, 9/11, etc. then should we not be saying that all business people are crooks and should be locked up? That's the impression I am getting listening to some of the arguments here.

I read recently that $18-$20 of the price of oil is from speculators alone. Any chance of these speculators losing interest? -
I suppose when you say deregulation works you might be referring to the operators or the investors. I'm not so sure one can say that it works well for the average consumer. I'm thinking of a few examples such as the California power grid system, ICBC in BC, etc. I have also heard horror stories where families in undeveloped countries are paying 27% of their income for water alone now since water was privatized.

I think a lot of Canadians will be quite pleased with the New Democratic $4.6 billion amendments to the budget, and with the New Democrats keeping the government in power, come next election. But leadership is a big factor as well. Let's face it, PM Martin is now being perceived as a pretty old guy, and Conservative leader Harper is considered not to be very much in tune with Canadian values. The Layon New Democrats have the momentum, both in terms of leadership and policies. -

Comparing today's polling results with our last national election in June, 2004, we see that the Conservatives with a very unpopular leader are down 4%, the Liberals with another unpopular leader are down 2%, and the New Democrats with a popular leader are up 3%. Leadership is a very big issue for political parties. Now that Canadians have had a chance to see Jack Layton perforn in the House of Commons, remember he wasn't even an MP during the last election, they are beginning to like what they see. The Layton New Democrats certainly have the momentum, and it is quite probable they will receive an additional 3%, or 22% support, come next election day. -
Be careful with that list of countries that the National Post is circulating as I have heard from some quarters that that audiotape has been discredited and is not authentic. Apparently there was a retraction after the original details were circulated athough like any correction it was buried in the back pages.

Of course the US should go after the perpetuators of 9/11 and no one is suggesting otherwise except that Bush had a plan to go to war in Iraq even before he was elected. Iraq had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11 and by US invading Iraq it has slowed down defeating the al Quaeda organization whatever it is. All I am suggesting is that most Muslims are OK, just like most Jews are OK, and just like most Christians are OK but because of our indiscrimminate bombing/killing of innocent civilians we are now paying the price. If you don't like it don't bomb innocent people who have nothing to do with al Quaeda because all you end up doing is create more support, and more suicide bombers for your enemy. If we up the ante they will up the ante and the next thing that will happen is that dirty bombs will begin to be used in future sucide attacks. Is that what you want to happen next?

The main threat to Canada's health care system is all these doctors who want to gouge Canadians by opening up these private clinics. As soon as they are all closed up our health care system will be fine. I read yesterday that Ontario is going to have nurses assisting doctors during operations instead of other doctors. Great idea that is long overdue. We can put into action lots of innovative ideas like this. Our health care system is basically fine just the way it is.

I think it is a bit too late for that although there obviously is going to have be some major changes made on both sides of this mess.

Reading the following New York Times article about the Muslim communities in the UK makes me realize what a huge challenge it is going to be to turn some of these people around. It may never happen unless the UK decides to changes its foreign policies. Anger Burns on the Fringe of Britain's Muslims

Most Americans have finally lost confidence in Bush and his pretexts for going to war in Iraq. I thought most Canadians had already done that a long time ago. History will show U.S. lusted after oil
