It seems actually that we know next to nothing about who is behind these recent attacks in London. What we do seem to know is that these attacks will probably go on for 10 years. Good grief! Police swoop on capital's estates as hunt intensifies

Flashy tactics won't defeat the terrorists Good article. There is no way the US approach is going to succeed. Thank goodness there are at least some cooler heads that prevail in Britain. What a tragedy that is though for that Brazilian young man. Quite recently apparently there may be new developments in the UK.

Canada is a social democratic country and as such we have societial norms. One of them is that our governments are there to protect the weak ffrom the too powerful. Look at it this way: government intervention to redistribute the wealth is like a teacher stopping the school yard bully who is beating up on little kids.

"Have you any idea how much tyrants fear the pople they oppress? All of them realize that, one day, amongst their many victims, there is sure to be one who rises against them and strikes back!" - Albus Dumbledore, from J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince I really like this quote, don't you? At some point someone is gonna get 'em.

Today where do you get your news from?

Publisher leaves the National Post after eight months at the helm I am wondering if it is curtains for the National Post. They really don't seem to represent Canadian's viewpoint very much and I really wonder if there is that much of a market for this kind of publication in Canada. I think it is good to have diversification in our media but we already have a corporate media, and we need some alternative media like media represented unions, workers, and consumers points of view. -
I find it quite ironic that Conservatives in Canada support change if comes from Washington but oppose it if it comes from Ottawa. This is a dead issue now in the US. I can almost guarantee you that Conservatives in Canada will now drop their suport for the idea. I think it is time for Conservatives in Canada to develop some backbone and stand up for things they really believe in for Canada, instead of beings the lapdogs for the USA.

I have enough confidence that the vast majority, 99.9% of the Muslim community, just like all our other Canadian communities want to live in peace and would appreciate Canada kicking out non Canadians who promote violence and hatred, and locking up the Canadians that do promote violence and hatred. Zundel is a good example. Arar is not.

Just relax, Canada: Sorry to disappoint Julian Fantino and Anne McLellan, but our country doesn't make much of a terror target Police here ill-prepared for suicide bombers I actually think we are spending way too much money on security to prevent terrorism which we are not able to stop anyway so what's the point? We need to be in touch and befriend our Muslim community, and boot out the violence supporters, and as a result they will not be hostile towards Canada as a whole.

Interestingly enough conservative has become a dirty word in Canada just like liberal is perceived in the US.

Melanie Good point, I didn't think about the aspect that the police officers were not in uniform. I am intrigued by the following article and would appreciate hearing people's feedback on it. I am sure there are lots of people all over the world that are starting to reassess how wonderful living in our great cities is compared to the less terrorist prone smaller people centres. One red flag for me is that the author goes on about terrorists in Canada but doesn't say anything about the US training the 9/11 terrorists at US pilot schools on US soil, just like the US previously supported bin Laden and Saddam. Global warming doesn't exist, does it?

Scientists are usually paid money for research to solve a problem that we are encountering in society, so of course it is going to be perceived as working on negative issues. You know the old expression - if something works, don't fix it. I think that probably the best source for accurate details about issues are the science journals. Realistically how can we expect newspaper/TV/Radio reporters to be experts on the multitude of different topics they report on? It is impossible. Our society would be a lot heathier if we all read more of these science journals and spent less time following the news on TV/Radio/newspapers. Another huge advantage is that scientific journals always publish who paid for the reasearch funding so we can decide what kind of biases are already built in. -
Do you think there is a difference between the former president of World Com who took us for that multi billion dollar fraud and the woman who steals some food in a grocery store to feed her family? Maybe you don't but I do, and if I were the judge in both these situations I would through away the key for the white collar fraud, but I would not sentence the woman to jail time. You would probably call that discrimmination, but I call it judgement. I am not condoning the woman's behaviour, however there are mitigating circumstances in her situation, and she needs help. The white collar crook needs punishment.

Shot man not connected to bombing Jeez, I hope the police have not gunned down an innocent man. I mean some people's behaviour is different than the norm. This man apparently was wearing a heavy oversoat in warm weather which would be considered unusual. Why didn't the guy stop though when told to by the police?

I guess he is talking about us.

Internet Libertarians Should Learn Civil Discourse So do you think this guy is talking about us or what, eh? He does though raise an interesting point about the importance of being courteous regardless of how much we disagree with other posters here. And for that matter one can always just ignore someone who one feels is being uncivil. And I know some will say what is this doing in federal politics but this is most read section of the of mapleleafweb discussion board, and as well, our House of Commons is not a very civil place.

I wasn't talking about lazy people, I was talking about less privileged people, like the physically challenged, the intellectually challenged. Some people through no fault of their own are minorities. For example skin colour. It is up to the majority to accept and treat these people vwith respect and dignity and to not deprive them of their rightful place in society.

Ferocious Heat Maintains Grip Across the West? Quite the reverse of having to look after the homeless in the cold winter. Somehow we must be able to create a better society than this. The USA, the greatest country in the world, we have been programmed to believe. Well if this is the best we can do, we are not in any position to brag about much. Someone mentioned in a previous post that I was crying wolfe about global warming. I don't think so, and I don't think it is fair, especially to the disenfranchised, if we don't start taking some drastic measures immediately towards reducing global warming. I don't think people realize how serious this is. It is not something that we can just turn off or turn on like a tap. ------------------------ Hunting Witches God help us all. -
Just saw the following poll at CNEWS. With such a low popularity rating for their leader it is hard to see how the Conservatives are going to come anywhere close to the 99 seats they won during the last election. On the other hand if the Conservatives were to change their leader who would you like to see replace Harper. I don't think he is anywhere near as bad as the Liberals have made him out to be, but they have done good job of demonizing him.

Why is it always the poor that say they don't need to share their wealth with the poor? Why is always the majority that says they don't need to make allowances for the minorities? This is why we need a strong national government to be our Robin Hood. To protect the poor, the less privileged, the minorities, from the fat cats, the rich, the powerful, and the greedy.

Bush aide misled FBI, say reports Is Tenet going to lose his job, be fired, or go to jail? This is really starting to unravel in a most unfortunate way for Mr Bush. How many remember after 9/11 when Mr Bush made Mr Tenet head of the CIA? THIS APPEARS TO BE ONE BIG GIANT LIE FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. I incorrectly said Tenet here when I meant to say Peter Goss.

How stange seeing as there were not any WMD. I thought the US & the UK had the most competent fighting forces and spy networks in the world. Bush & Blair are both full of it and the world knows it.

Yes. I'm not always in favour of unions, but that one worked well for me. And now for an advertisement.... If you are interested in the history of unions, or just want to see a great play, see "Strike!" if you ever get the chance. Its the story of the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have heard a lot about the Winnipeg General Strike. If it is ever shown on TV please let us know. Rght wingers hypocritically complain about government, but they have no idea what left wingers have been subjected to. Have right wingers ever been beaten or stomped by mounted police/corporations/government on horseback? I doubt it. But those poor right wingers. Imagine they have to share their wealth with people less privileged in society. Wow! How painful that must be!

The main thing, at least for the folks in the UK is that the police have arrested what is reported to be one of yesterday's attempted bombers. This is significant and great news if it is true, and hopefully the UK police will be able to glean a lot of information from him.
