No, it was the crux of the article....i.e upgrades to the Super Hornet to add a measure of survivability to an aircraft that is already outclassed by the latest Russian aircraft and air defense systems today.

Ahh yeah, it does, since you cite a price the DoD paid for Super Hornets, four years ago, absent engines, avionics and ECM/targeting pods......and suggest this is what Canada would pay today, even though the DoD pays far more.

Nor are Super Hornets........as to Growlers, again, the USMC is replacing their Prowler fleet with baseline F-35s.........and not Growlers, as such, comparing Super Hornets to Lightnings, and what they will bring to future battlefields is applies to oranges.

Doesn't mater, the USN's legacy fleet is a decade plus younger than ours.

Ahh no, the F-35 is equipped with said "equipment" on production, including much of the Growler's suite.......and of course, said F-35 pricing isn't the full-rate production pricing.

The USN doesn't get that price.....but you're right, unlike the price we would pay for the F-35, afforded with membership in the program (which the Liberals are still paying into) which is equal to what the Americans would pay, a Super Hornet purchase would be full pull.

Ahh no, the USN (and RAAF) will retire their fleets in the 2030s........based on the expected ~40 service of our current Hornets, we will be flying their replacements through to the 2060s.......

Why don't you actually compare the prices than? With engines, avionics, ECM/targeting pods, the USN is paying well over $70 million per Super Hornet (nearly $90 million per Growler).......

It doesn't mater what the F-35 costs, or will cost when it enters production, as we can't afford any aircraft with the proposed budget, at current exchange rates. And no, I won't go into another thread, as this clearly speaks to Coyne's point, the Liberals made foolish promises on the Hornet replacement file.

How do we know that? The Liberals projections are the ones that are off, likewise, taking into account the further sliding Canadian economy since they have taken office.

I already have, the two cheapest Western produced aircraft now (Super Hornet & F-16) are over $70 million flyaway in USD, which converts into ~$100 million Canadian......more than the planned ~$85 USD F-35 (when our dollar was at or near parity)......as such, selecting the cheapest (F-16V) now pushes past the cost of the F-35 purchase at current exchange rates.

Just wait until they add their new spending.........and to see which promised groups don't get a piece of the action

No it isn't, as already cited..........there are no Western produced aircraft inside the proposed envelope for 65 new aircraft (plus spares, training aides etc), at this current exchange rate.

No, the argument is that unless either more money is added to the Hornet replacement program (or our dollar reverts to parity) or the Trudeau Government reduces the number of aircraft (thus not only limiting our ability to contribute to NATO, but NORAD), they won't be buying new aircraft in this mandate, and there will be no savings to go to the navy........ Furthermore, if they leave the F-35 program (which they haven't done), once the current low rate production contracts expire in a couple years, thousands of Canadians in the aerospace sector will loose their jobs as the aircraft enters full production.
