Northern Gateway Pipeline Approved
Derek 2.0 replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Again, a further lacklustre take on the industry……Oil flows (pun intended) to market regardless of compass points. As to the Supreme Court ruling, perhaps it would be best to reread it……All First Nations have achieved is to be seen as “equals” with other Canadians when getting bent over the barrel (pun again)…….Conveyance and property rights and laws now apply…….. -

Again, you have a poor understanding of economics and/or fail to understand that Canada (like most modern economies) has a market driven economy. -

Reread it before professing "the basics" to me: Now what was the World’s economic health status in 2010? What was the price of oil worldwide and from the Middle East? And of course, would you consider the Middle East more or less stable today, then it was in 2010? And what has happened to the rate of production of both Atlantic Canadian and North Sea oil? -

Again, basic economics and the workings of the petroleum industry are failing you…..The majority of sweet crude refined in the Atlantic provinces is actually form Norway and the United Kingdom (and offshore Newfoundland). The process of refining Alberta bitumen and sour crude is more expensive, requiring more extensive refineries……hence refining Alberta bitumen and/or sour crude would cost more for the producers, and in turn the consumers. As to “Saudi tankers”, again, you don’t know what you’re talking about. The majority of Middle Eastern crude, like Alberta crude (and Venezuelan), is also high in sulphur content, requiring the same extensive process of refinement, which is done in predominantly Texas and Louisiana for the North American market. -

You’ve demonstrated clearly the workings of the world petroleum market and basic economics makes no sense to you….I don’t dispute that...........As has been repeated to you several times, the (three) refineries at the terminus points of Energy East are near capacity already, as such, for Canadians to benefit from the piped bitumen, it would have to be exported to be refined, then shipped back to Canada……..unless refining capacity was increased, but of course, this would have follow on effects for consumers. -

You seem of the assumption that the rate of production is a zero sum game, well being pegged at the current rates…..likewise your notion that oil burned in Canada is “better” then oil burned in China or Western Europe…..that’s an oblivious disregard of basic economics, fore oil’s price is determined by the market as a whole. -
Helicopter Deal - F-35 All Over Again?
Derek 2.0 replied to Mighty AC's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Well no, it doesn't work that way, especially when we’ve introduced new aircraft (CC-117s, CC-130J and the new Chinooks) and/or have small & unique capabilities (aerial tankers and MPAs) that don’t have a large and diverse talent pool to choose from…….. Simply put, if said Colonel packs it in, that does not mean the Majors below are qualified at that point to take over………..Even with the larger communities like fighters, at most, there are under 200 qualified pilots in that field in the RCAF right now…….after you’ve subtracted those on leave, courses, staff postings, postings to the various training establishments and deployment, you’ve very few left for the operational squadrons at home……..as such, holes in the training establishment are plugged with foreigners, namely from the Commonwealth, United States and finally NATO, allowing our junior pilots further time gaining experience in said operational squadrons. As I said, this is far from a new practice, my own father (and many like him) were actively recruited from the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm in the 1950s by both the RCN and RAN FAAs, when both were still in their infancy……..The only reason this is “newsworthy” is because of the TFW flap going on… -

Huh? Where did you garner that? How will it reduce ship movements if the oil is being exported out of Canada? Huh? The vast majority of the oil through the proposed Energy East line, as reported in the link I provided, will be exported offshore........And do you suggest TransCanada isn't interested in making money? -

How many earthquakes and landslides have caused ruptures on TAPS and Trans Mountain? I have no idea......how many ships will deliver oil transported through Energy East to Europe and the US Eastern Seaboard? -

To add (since you like maps) So you're saying there isn't any significant rivers along the proposed Eastern route -

Derek 2.0 replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Yet you can't demonstrate Earthquakes negatively affecting both TAPS and Trans Mountain..........What percent of the proposed route is inaccessible? There would be no rivers (or not much) on a eastward pipeline? I thought you said you can read maps -

So aircraft don’t fly through bad weather? As to pipelines, based on the collective histories of TAPS and Trans Mountain, Northern Gateway looks in good steed. -

Derek 2.0 replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Perhaps you don't know, but the precedent of TAPS and Trans Mountain lend a suggestion. Yet, civil air travel has not been banned due to a tiny fraction of a percent of aircraft being lost due to bad weather. -

So you cede that the majority of the pipeline is not in the Ring of Fire, as such, is unlikely to be exposed to a major earthquake. Good, you’re learning. As to the portion that will be within the Ring of Fire, based on precedence surrounding the safety records of both the TAPS and the portion of the Trans Mountain line that is exposed, what is the likelihood of an earthquake negatively effecting the proposed Northern Gateway? This is where your claimed risk management skills kick in. As to your “parallel”, continuing on that meme, have we stopped manned flight because a tiny percent of aircraft in the history of aviation have crashed due to bad weather? -

BC Teachers Getting Screwed...Again

And perhaps more importantly, during this final week of the school year, sans any bargaining, there are already grumblings amongst members over why they are even striking……couple this with the strike pay (lack there of) and the handling over Vince Ready, the BCTF executive could very well have rough seas ahead. -

Exactly.....nor is the Northern Gateway route over predominantly seismically active ground, unlike TAPS. -

Two reasons as highlighted in my links by several environmental groups, there isn’t vast sums of excess refining capacity in the refineries the oil is going to……second the terminus of these lines are in port cities.
