The UNWTO later stressed that Mugabe was not made an official U.N. ambassador or given a tourism-related title.

WTO spokeswoman Sandra Carvao said Mugabe and Sata were presented with “an open letter which calls for them to support tourism as a means to foster sustainable development in their countries to the benefit of their people,” according to Britain’s The Guardian newspaper.

Some confusion now... maybe the Zimbabwe Herald got it wrong ?

I expect MLW member 'PIK' will adjust his thread title and OP!

UN's World Tourism Organization, UNWTO, which has headquarters in Madrid, insisted that it had not awarded Mugabe an official title. Sandra Carvao, its co-ordinator of communications, said: "Correct would be to say UNWTO has presented both presidents with an open letter which calls for them to support tourism as a means to foster sustainable development in their countries to the benefit of their people and consequently ask them to support the sector in this respect."

She added: "UNWTO does not have an ambassadors programme and the receiving of the UNWTO/WTTC [World Travel and Tourism Council] open letter implies no legal commitment or title attribution to the country or the head of state or government in question."

The U.N. World Tourism Organization endorsed Mugabe along with Zambian President Michael Sata at the African countries’ shared border, where the pair signed an agreement Tuesday to co-host the WTO General Assembly in August 2013.

so... given your new revised quote... again, when will you be adjusting your thread title and OP to correct your inaccuracies and ill-founded criticism of the UN?

UNWTO - Information Note on recent press coverage related to the hosting of the 20th UNWTO General Assembly, Victoria Falls (Zambia/Zimbabwe)

May 2012

Over the last few days a series of articles related to the hosting of the UNWTO General Assembly in Victoria Falls (Zambia/Zimbabwe) have been published which do not reflect the facts. In this respect, UNWTO would like to clarify the following:

1. The 155 UNWTO Member States decided, at the 19th Session of the UNWTO General Assembly held in October 2011 in the Republic of Korea, to hold the 20th Session of the UNWTO General Assembly in Victoria Falls (Zambia/Zimbabwe) in 2013. In this framework, the UNWTO Secretary-General was in Victoria Falls on 29 May 2012 to sign a tripartite agreement with both countries on the hosting of the 20th Session of the General Assembly.

2. Tourism is today a central sector for the future of all countries, particularly African countries, where it accounts for an increasing number of jobs, community developments and export earnings and thus, on the occasion of the signature of the above mentioned agreement, the Secretary-General presented the Presidents of Zambia and Zimbabwe with an Open Letter on Travel and Tourism. This Letter was sent to all heads of state and government worldwide and aims to raise awareness of the potential of tourism for development, job creation and economic growth. The Open Letter calls upon heads of state and government to support the tourism sector as it can contribute to build a better future for the people of their countries, if properly developed.

3. It is also important, in this context, to note that UNWTO does not have an Ambassadors Programme and that the receiving of the Open Letter implies no legal commitment or official title attribution to the country or the recipient.

Waldo, last nights news seem to agree with my statement, but does that really matter, just the fact that they would even consider this man for anything but a execution is nuts. Just like gadafi being praise by the UN for his human rights in his country. You nitpicking.

perhaps you should actually read the linked reference you replied to... that you (also) quoted. After you... actually read it... come back and relate what you describe Mugabe is being considered for by the UNWTO - and then correct your thread title and OP inaccuracies.

because of what you said? Did not realize you had such pull... that you were so tapped in!

apparently Baird hasn't been properly apprised - perhaps you should have him read the official UNWTO response previously linked - again:

so... given your new revised quote... again, when will you be adjusting your thread title and OP to correct your inaccuracies and ill-founded criticism of the UN?

this should be a real no-brainer for Baird... considering Canada is not, and has never been, a member or associate member state of the UNWTO!

now go and correct your thread title and OP, hey!
