Yes I was quite disappointed about Project Ares I-X/Orion's cancellation. It was huge...powerful...and very simple. They could have had a row of those things waiting lift-off to the Moon at the same time. But since the beastie didn't look like the Millenium Falcon, it had few friends outside of NASA/JPL (and ilk) it seems.

I wouldn't give Ares that much praise... it had a lot of flaws and it would have been much better simply to man rate an Atlas or a Delta. However, with the constellation program (Ares/Orion/Altair) being canceled, NASA is left pretty much directionless. And, like I said, the most wasteful part of it is, even though they know that Ares I is canceled, they are still developing and testing it now (at a cost of hundreds of millions) because they haven't been given a new mandate yet. And of course while all this is happening, instead of being in congress trying to get NASA back on track, Bolton is out in the middle east talking to schoolchildren about science outreach. Not impressed with this guy at all.

Well, early Atlas flights had a few flaws in them as too...

Heh...reminds me of that old video game Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space (aka Lift-off!)

Mars' atmosphere is 1% the density of Earth, and gravity is 0.38 of Earth gravity. A solar powered plane that could fly on Earth would need a wing that is 38 times larger (without adding any mass) to fly on Mars, or alternately would need to be flying 6 times faster. Needing to fly faster takes a lot more power (power required to fly at a certain speed rises with velocity cubed while lift only increases with velocity squared),

Isn't that also proportional to air resistance, though? If the air on Mars is 1% as dense, it should take far less power to achieve a given speed than it would in earth's atmosphere.

Anyway, just saw this and thought you guys might get a kick out of it:

The test of time puts the DC-3, the C-130 Herc and the Otter (both single engine and twin) on the all time best list.

The government can't give anything to anyone without having first taken it from someone else.

Indeed they are. I posted a pretty cool Otter video a number of pages back. Huge machine...the classic Otter.

Another fine DeHavilland aircraft...

Re: Falcon 9...seems they don't run the turbo exhaust lines around the rocket nozzle skirt to stop it from glowing red hot...interesting. Seems to still work...

Actually I believe the Merlin Vacuum engine is regeneratively cooled. It probably glows yellow despite this. It is only the older Merlin 1A and 1B which were ablatively cooled.
