fellowtraveller Posted September 18, 2007 Report Posted September 18, 2007 I don't want to read too much into byelections, but.... Harper must be thinking of forcing a general election this fall. The Bloc is in disarray and now have lost a strong seat to Harper. The Liberals are even worse, with infighting after losing Outremont, a sLberal stronghold, and finishing a distant and weak third in the other two ridings. The NDP don't matter, as usual. What holds him back? If he waits, the inevitable scandal and hateful media will eventually catch up and damage him. The liberal Senate will continue to confound him. At worst, he could easily win another minority, and if he continues to play Duceppe and Dion as puppetmaster - perhaps a majority. Quote The government should do something.

The liberal Senate will continue to confound him. At worst, he could easily win another minority, and if he continues to play Duceppe and Dion as puppetmaster - perhaps a majority. He is held back by the fixed election date law. Harper won't go to the Governor General unless defeated in the House. He will be a lot more forceful and agressive in implementing a new agenda in the House of Commons. The speech from the throne will outline that agenda, or serve as the Conservative Party's platform in the next election. In essence he could force the opposition to defeat him. When will the next election be? That's up to the opposition parties. If the Liberals do make moves to dump Dion then we could very likely last until the date mandated for the next election, October of 09. The speech from the throne will outline that agenda, or serve as the Conservative Party's platform in the next election. In essence he could force the opposition to defeat him. What do you think that agenda would be? I'd say the Conservatives need to come up with a policy that is right-wing enough to force the opposition to defeat them, while not too right-wing as to scare away voters in the election. Any suggestions for what that policy could be? Quote Almost three thousand people died needlessly and tragically at the World Trade Center on September 11; ten thousand Africans die needlessly and tragically every single day-and have died every single day since September 11-of AIDS, TB, and malaria. We need to keep September 11 in perspective, especially because the ten thousand daily deaths are preventable. - Jeffrey Sachs (from his book "The End of Poverty")
Shakeyhands Posted September 18, 2007 Report Posted September 18, 2007 Here's an idea, sound fiscal planning. How about aggressive tax cuts and aggressive infrastructure announcements? ding ding! That should have the 'progressives' shrieking. The far left in the liberal party and all the NDP will be forced to not accept it and boom there is an election with something good to sell. Tax cuts can sell themselves if they are 'real' and not the smarmy stuff from last time. The infrastructure can be sold as 'green'. majority. Higgly Posted September 18, 2007 Report Posted September 18, 2007 (edited) Well the Liberal party has done it to itself. They had a choice between Ignatieff and Dion. Can you see a guy who advocates torture (OK, under the 'right' conditions) ever getting elected in Quebec? Fat chance. Maybe it's time to vote NDP. Anything but a fascist, bush-kissing neocon. I wonder if Naomi Klein has ever considered running... Edited September 18, 2007 by Higgly Quote "We have seen the enemy and he is us!". Pogo (Walt Kelly).
