at a press conference they were holding, no less.

Tina Richards, a Marine Mom, who’s the CEO of Grassroots America.

U.S. Marine Sergeant Adam Kokesh. He’s the co-chair elect of the Iraq Veterans Against the War.

outrageous!

Insults are the ammunition of the unintelligent - do not use them. It is okay to criticize a policy, decision, action or comment. Such criticism is part of healthy debate. It is not okay to criticize a person's character or directly insult them, regardless of their position or actions. Derogatory terms such as "loser", "idiot", etc are not permitted unless the context clearly implies that it is not serious. Rule of thumb: Play the ball, not the person (i.e. tackle the argument, not the person making it).

oh and a reverend was arrested!

Rev.Lennox Yearwood attacked, arrested.

Cause he wanted to go to the hearings of the Gen. Petraeus

The Reverend speaks here about what happened

Remember "they hate us for our freedoms"

The video states that he was arrested for violating a poster ban. There is a same law in Toronto. (IIRC)

Doesnt look like it was for free speech.

There is not a "Poster ban" in TO. Not one that I could find anywhere.

If you know differently please provide a link.

http://www.publicspace.ca/postering.htm

Toronto's by-law is available there.(2006)

and much of the concern over the banning of poster's was, a free speech issue!

As posters are a way to communicate to members of a community , hence free speech.

In the meantime, the old bylaws remain in place. So get out your tape, staplegun and wheatpaste brush! Anywhere within the former city of Toronto, it is still legal to place a letter-sized poster on any utility pole

There is a ban on monster posters. It seems someone will justify any infraction, no matter how petty, no matter how gross if it's called a free speech issue. The annibversay of NOW magazine being charged for communication prostitution wajust passed. Hollet and Klein called it a free speech issue....considering the ads they ran cost more than double of a standard bus classified, I don't know how they could call it free speech with a straight face.

RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS

Beverley McLachlin, PC, LL.D, M.A., LL.B, BA (born September 7, 1943) is the Chief Justice of Canada,

1: free speech promotes "The free flow of ideas essential to political democracy and democratic institutions" and limits the ability of the state to subvert other rights and freedoms; 2: it promotes a marketplace of ideas, which includes, but is not limited to, the search for truth; 3: it is intrinsically valuable as part of the self-actualisation of speakers and listeners; and 4: it is justified by the dangers for good government of allowing its suppression.

which is what the Marine and Marine mom, were doing, and the Reverend.

"The free flow of ideas essential to political democracy and democratic institutions" and limits the ability of the state to subvert other rights and freedoms

But hey, agent provocateurs at protests, are Okeydokey in some minds?????

Rather then a subversion of the populaces right to free spech and protest?

"They hate us for our freedoms"

As somebody employed by a company with publicly accessible cable boxes, let me tell you that graffitti and posters create a real nuisance. We spedn over $65,000 a year just inthe southern Ontario area to clean up the aftermath of this kind of thing. It is such an eyesore in cities to see all these posters on the poles and power boxes, newspaper boses and mailboxes. Free speech is not free postering.

I don't think those folks would have been arrested in they paraded around in tee shirts with their slogans on them. But, they should not be allowed to put their stuff on public property, just their own private property.

If they broke a law, and the law isn't selectively/politically enforced, then they had no right to put up their posters. I can't find any information on this incident other than on blogs, so it's difficult to know the real story. From the information I can find, it sounds as if they broke the law and were then arrested for refusing to abide by/respect the law.

It's obvious they broke the law so trying to make it out as a freedom of speech issue doesn't cut it.

Here's something on postering, I don't know what the status is of the proposed new postering law in Toronto.

Actually I fell that there right to free speech is "higher power" than the ban on large posters. Now im not advocation will nilly advertising for whatever belief you have anywhere you please. But at the same time Arresting someone for hanging a poster? come on. OVER the top. And very dangerous to are first amendment rights.

Very dangerous to first right amendments, indeed!!!!!

and I agree free speech is a higher power to a poster ban.

Is it obvious they broke the law?

How do you know?

Were you there?

given that it was a press conference the poster may or may not have stayed where it was?

The cop on the horse, riding into the reporters was heavy handed, to say the least.

But hey, if the cops are working on good relations with the community, they have along way to go

There is NO poster ban in TO.

The legislation is already posted.

How about the reverend?

STUDENT TASERED FOR ASKING SEN KERRY ABOUT VOTER SUPPRESSION

Kerry was kind enough to answer the question while he was being tasered.

"They hate us for our freedoms"

freedom to not ask questions, freedom to not hang posters, freedom to not attend hearings.

LOL!

oh and your free to not wear the tshirt of your choosing also, thankfully, they sued and thankfully the judge had a brain!

http://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/wireStory?id=3489979

A couple arrested at a rally after refusing to cover T-shirts that bore anti-President Bush slogans settled their lawsuit against the federal government for $80,000, the American Civil Liberties Union announced Thursday.

Question: why were they arrested in the first place?

and charged with trespassing?

"This settlement is a real victory not only for our clients but for the First Amendment," said Andrew Schneider, executive director of the ACLU of West Virginia. "As a result of the Ranks' courageous stand, public officials will think twice before they eject peaceful protesters from public events for exercising their right to dissent."

White House spokesman Blair Jones said the settlement was not an admission of wrongdoing.

"The parties understand that this settlement is a compromise of disputed claims to avoid the expenses and risks of litigation and is not an admission of fault, liability, or wrongful conduct," Jones said.

The front of the Ranks' homemade T-shirts bore the international symbol for "no" superimposed over the word "Bush." The back of Nicole Rank's T-shirt said "Love America, Hate Bush." On the back of Jeffery Rank's T-shirt was the message "Regime Change Starts at Home."

The ACLU said in a statement that a presidential advance manual makes it clear that the government tries to exclude dissenters from the president's appearances. "As a last resort," the manual says, "security should remove the demonstrators from the event."

I guess, when a country is so busy promoting 'freedom' around the world, they might forget that "a presidential advance manual makes it clear that the government tries to exclude dissenters from the president's appearances. " excluding dissenters, makes that 'freedom' seem, not free.

Who is "they?"

"they" are the enemies of freedom.

wether it be heavy handed, taser happy cops, spying Pentagon, or provocateurs at protests.

Or ask George Bush

it's his slogan.
