I think it's odd that there's a comparison between "innocents" and "guilty" (though of course some innocents have been executed, too), which is why I misread it in the first place. Somehow I'm not surprsised. The fact is, it's all deceiving and irrelevant. Numbers mean nothing unless one is talking about the same size group. Furthermore, using numbers as some sort of proof of who is 'more evil' is ridiculous. Who killed more people-- Son of Sam, Jeffrey Dahmer, or Ted Bundy? Apparently we need this information so we will know who is the worst and who can be given the coveted position of being morally superior as "not as bad." I'm guessing the families of those killed might argue that one is as bad as the next, but hey, it's all about the numbers, eh?

And while we're tallying up the numbers, I wonder how many people drunk drivers kill each year compared to the Islamists? What about how many people The War Machine kills?

I stand corrected, assuming one picks the site with the higher number of executions to believe. That hardly makes a material difference to the point however. There simply is no equivalency. There isn't. Parsing out numbers to see whether it took 65 years or 50 years to execute by due process enough convicted murderers to equal the number of innocents killed in one day by Islamic thugs is so ridiculous that it's laughable. It's almost comic relief.

How many people will the global Jihad kill today? 100? 150? Or will it stick to a lower level of terror and only saw the heads off a couple innocent schoolgirls here and blow up a few folks in a bazaar there? So far they've only killed 7 today, so maybe it won't be so bad:

I really have no interest in trying to equate one religion or ideology with another. As far as I'm concerned the abortion clinic bomber is just as wrong as the suicide bomber in a marketplace. Are there parallels between extremists of all religions / ideologies? I think so. But I see no reason to try to rank these religions / ideologies in terms of who is better overall & who is worse. Those types of statements are too general and do nothing to improve people's understanding of the issues or suggest solutions to complex problems. I am saying all of this because my next few comments are not meant to defend or attack a particular viewpoint about whether one religion is "worse" than another.

Using numbers in the way that these sites do is almost always misleading. Not necessarily intentionally misleading, but still misleading. For instance, take a look at the list of "Islamic Terror Attacks from January to June of 2007":

6/30/07 Iraq Asiriya 2 12 Two children are killed, and a dozen more injured, when Jihadis mortar a soccer field.

...

6/30/07 Chechnya Vedeno 1 2 Holy Warriors ambush a security patrol, killing one member.

These numbers are all characterized as Islamic terror attacks. But are they? Or perhaps it would be better to look at other situations to see if they are being characterized in the same way.

For instance, when a Christian US pilot drops a bomb in Iraq and two children are killed would we say that this was a Christian attack? In the example quoted, Jihadis mortar a soccer field. I just don't think there is enough information there. These people, while declaring themselves Muslim, may not be there simply to kill based on religion. For some of the insurgents in Iraq it is about ridding the country of an invading force and not just simply about religion. But this is a hard example, and I know that many people here will take great offense to it. So let's look at the other two I quoted.

The Chechnya example I think is similar to the first one, but different enough that it should also be looked at. These "Holy Warriors" attacked a security patrol. If these are people, separatists, trying to fight for their country, attempting to rid their country of Russian rule, then perhaps their religion is not the deciding factor here. During the American Revolution would you characterize a group of militiamen killing a British patrol as a Christian terrorist attack? (Assuming the militiamen were Christians.)

The honour killing also bears mentioning. This is a murder, plain and simple. The motivation may have something to do with this person's religious beliefs, but then again so did this (also found here). And I don't think anyone is calling this a Christian terrorist attack.

All I'm trying to say is that making statements like "Islamic terrorists murder more people every day than the Ku Klux Klan has in the last 50 years" is not necessarily accurate. And not just because someone picked 50 years instead of 60. But because how you define "Islamic terrorist" will have a huge impact on the numbers. At the end of the day the cliche is true: you can use statistics to prove anything. How you define your starting point, how you organize the numbers, etc. can always be manipulated. And sometimes it isn't even intentional, it just so happens that you assume something and all of a sudden you have included a simple murder in stats on terrorists.

I applaud your conceptual gymnastics in trying to whitewash Islam. The attempt at logic is startling, to say the least. One can negate anything by calling it "murder, plain and simple," but the context does in fact have something to do with it. Honor killings are undertaken by Muslims, because they are Muslims. The other examples are Muslims killing people...whether for geographical reasons linked to Jihad, which the Chechnya war is, or for outright Jihadic reasons in the name of a 6th century barbarian.

And the example you supplied of a Christian killing a homosexual IS Christian terrorism...but it's telling that it's a single episode that occured a while ago and is notable ONLY because it is so infrequent. You simply can't stack those numbers up together. It's impossible...which is why you tried to avoid calling a Christian killing a homosexual for religious reasons "Christian terrorism."

If a lone psychopath kills someone in the name of Christianity and is condemned by all other Christians out of hand, that's one thing. If thousands of people all over the globe kill people daily in the name of Islam and are cheered on by literally millions of other Muslims, that's something different entirely. Several orders of magnitude different.

Oh I understand the contextualization of the statistics all too well. I also understand why you would want to parse out one or two slightly questionable incidents in a sea of Islamic atrocities in order to suggest that somehow these statistics are merely the sum total of all murders committed by folks who happen to be Muslim.

I further understand why you inserted an incident of obvious Christian terrorism and then proceeded to so generously claim it is NOT terrorism, when it so clearly is. He killed a homosexual and cited his reason for doing so by appealing to Christian beliefs. That means he killed in the name of Christianity. That means he is a Christian terrorist, just as the tens of thousands of Muslims who kill in the name of a 6th century thug are Islamic terrorists. But there are only a few Christian terrorists, most of whom are direly insane, and a veritable flood of quite rational Islamic terrorists.

The numbers are important. No doubt we can all find instances in the statistics I posted where the exact intent and motive may be called into question. But doing so will simply remove a few grains of sand from the beach...the sheer numbers belie your attempt to draw moral equivalency. Here are the numbers from the last three months...see how many of these you can excuse on the grounds that they are motivated by factors other than Islam. First, allow me to re-state this since you missed it again. I am not trying to equate Islam with Christianity or any other religion or ideology. Not on a moral basis. Not on any basis. I say this because I think it highly doubtful that you do understand what I am saying.

Please enlighten us as to your definition of a terror attack and your definition of a terrorist. Because killing one person because God told you to is not a terror attack, nor is that person a terrorist. To me, terrorism involves actually trying to create terror - committing the crime not just to commit the crime, but also to scare other people. Admittedly there is no definition of terrorism that everyone in the world accepts, but there are a few out there. See here.

I did not parse out one or two slightly questionable incidents. I simply took a look at the list and had three examples right away. I think this fact on its own says a lot about the list. I did not go through the entire list, and I have no intention of doing so in the future. Because it is pointless. No doubt there are many acts that count as terror acts - I did not suggest otherwise. But I am convinced there are some acts that should not be on that list. Which is why my original argument - that using numbers like this is counter-productive - still stands. There are too many questions about what is valid and what is not. And at the end of the day this type of comparison only promotes misconceptions and prevents people from concentrating on stopping actual extremists.

The bottom line is that I think these numbers are a generalization, no different than when an extremist claims that the West is corrupt and decadent and only interested in oil and money.

Unless you're the moderator, piss off with the instructions. I included all that text to make a point about sheer numbers...perhaps you didn't get that?

And stop trying to pretend I don't understand what you're saying...frankly I find your attempts to pseudo-intellectualize this discussion as if it's some kind of abstract philosophical question a little un-nerving. It doesn't matter how you define "terrorism"...that is a side issue if ever there were a side issue. It is at best a red herring.

Muslims are killing people because they are Muslims. You can call it a religious killing, or a traffic accident, or even a kumquat if you so wish, but if it is committed in the name of Islam, I call it an Islamic terrorist act. If you are having problems defining terrorism as opposed to other killings in the name of Allah, that's your problem...but that's not really what you're up to here. You are attempting to claim that this list is largely composed of murders committed by folks who are only Muslim in passing, and not by people who are killing because they are Muslim.
